my slow cooker is too big?

I just bought a new crock pot and assumed that getting the big one would be the best but it's soooo big (7 qt) so I was wondering...

What do you guys think about dummying up the extra room with like a large pyrex measuring cup(4 cup) filled with water? Do you think this was work OK? I could set it in the middle with the food around it? Is this a crazy idea?

Why do you think you need to do this? Will there only be 1" of food in the bottom otherwise?

Yes, that's what I mean...there's just not enough food for what it needs to be. Like, it says the pot should be 1/2 full. Well with a 7 qt dish...it takes a lot of food to fill that huge pot 1/2 full! That's why I was wondering about taking up extra space with a (heat proof) container of water.

johnliu, I'm sure I'll be finding out, and I haven't made sushi in quite a while, now I need to get busy and make some. dcarch, I have no idea what those characters mean, I'm only assuming it's complimentary. (grin) As for the source of the auction items, the people who run it allow private sellers to take a photograph and write a description of their item to be auctioned, and the auction company keeps a percentage. I've seen items from a child's potty chair to tractors to "a box of awesomeness", LOL. It's easy to find, jnjonlineauction dot com. In addition to the private sellers, the company and/or agents/sellers buy estate items, store liquidations, the items in abandoned/unpaid storage units, etc. This week there are 2,000+ items up for auction and many of them are complete junk, many are firearms and ammunition, and a few are real gems. If you want slow and low, you might want an old style Crock Pot from a garage sale. I forget when they changed the temperatures, but they used to be made for 8-10 hour cooks, and now they are meant to be done in 4-5 hours. There are ones that have fancy temperature settings, however, that let you have some control. The crock pots that just have low and high apparently are meant to get to the same temperature on both--just past boiling--but the low cycles slower and cooks slower. Some have a keep warm setting that some people have found works well for them with the old fashioned crock pot recipes. Crock pots were invented by a guy who wanted to make cholent--a bean stew that used to be made in the banked fires of community bread ovens overnight for the Jewish sabbath. He really expected his to run for 18 hours or more. They were very straightforward. The new kind confuse me with their too high temperatures. The whole premise was supposed to be that you could leave it all day without touching it. The government got into it and said that people would open them early and eat foods that hadn't had a chance to come to safe temperature, so even though people have been cooking this way for millennia and living to tell the tale, we have to be protected from those who won't follow instructions. Sigh. I can't recommend models. I can just say to research well and be aware of what the new one can do and how it fits your expectations.

I have all three as well. PC's are excellent timesavers--steamed artichokes in 12-14 minutes instead of 45. Excellent for quickly tenderizing cuts of meat. (Great curry dishes in 20 minutes.) And sometime this week I'm gonna make corned beef & cabbage in just a little more than an hour. And I find that I prefer osso buco made in the PC to the non-PC way. Also, with a PC I can make foolproof risotto with hardly any effort and very little time, so I end up making risotto more often. (Indeed, Kuhn Rikon markets a small PC as a 'risotto maker'.) Dutch ovens are great for unfussy cooking; starting something on the stovetop and then finishing them in a slow oven is their forte. If you like this technique, take a look at Molly Stevens' All About Braising. Great resource. I have found that since I got into PC cooking I don't use my slow cooker as much. Slow cookers are great for stews, chili, beans and other things where the timing isn't critical--but the pressure cooker is very good on beans and grains as well, in about a third the time. If you want to work more grains and beans into your menus, a pressure cooker really is worthwhile. Lorna Sass, the pressure cooker expert, has written a pressure cooker cookbook precisely aimed at vegetarians. (See the link.) If I had to give up any one of those gadgets, it would be the slow cooker. I definitely wouldn't give up my PC, and I really like the enameled cast iron Dutch ovens as well. I have one of the big Rivals that has never cooked at the right temp, another forum I am on we all started to compare ours and every one of found we were having the same problems, there were some recalls listed on the Rival site for some of them but not all. I have had a West Bend CookerPlus since the late 70's and the thing still cooks perfectly, if I get another I will look for one like it. I do like the look of that Hamilton Beach 3in1 but had not heard how well it performed, I may go that route, the 3 sizes is great. My big Rival came with other inserts also but it was never dependable on cooking temps. the 3in1 has good reviews on Amazon, I saw one listed there for $39 but the shipping was high. Thanks for letting us know this is a good one.

You can try it and see how it works. Who knows? It may be a solution for you. If it were me though, I'd just use the ''opportunity'' to make more food, and freeze it for the future when I'm burned out and don't want to cook.

I also cook extra and freeze for later use.
I've never had a problem with too little food in it.

Anybody know where I can buy a 10 qt.??? LOL Mine is 6 qt. and often isn't big enough. Yes, there's just two of us..... But I like to cook ahead. Especially things like pulled pork, pot roast/veggies, spaghetti sauce, etc.
Same amount of electricity pretty much whether half full or completely full.

I have several sized crock pots for that very reason...however, try the pyrex filler, maybe it will work, but I'm doubting it.

I too cook and freeze the rest. I have a 6 qt. crock pot. There's just me and although, I love to cook, I don't have time to cook all the time. I make lots of my own "TV dinners". It leaves me alot more time to do other things and at the same time, still allows me to eat healthy. Besides, I love my own cooking.

I think cooking a small amount is a large cooker can be problematic.

I think 5 quart cookers are ideal.

I see this post is very old, but in case someone else comes here like I did, I'd like to offer some suggestions I read at other sites. I'm researching because I'm torn between a 6 qt. on sale with all the bells and whistles or a multi-size that can handle 2 qt, 4 qt or 6 qt meals. I think I'll be getting the 6 qt because most recipes are made for that size and some won't scale down properly for smaller amounts. If the crock isn't half way full, you can put a pyrex dish inside the crock to make it heat better. Another suggestion was to put foil over the food but I think the small dish inside the crock would make more sense. Some say to cover the dish, others don't specify. Hope this helps!
