Somehow I got on a site called Kikiki- or Kijiji?? I started to look at the 'pet' section. Big mistake- I realize how many dogs/cats are put down each year, but just looking at this site....I was at the 'New York' page. Hundreds and hundreds of puppie- 'Glamour', 'Special,'Rare!'...mutts. Mixed breeds that are being sold for $1,000. I saw one 'breeder' that came up often- MUST be a puppymill. Advertized everything from poodle to Yorkie to Maltese, to dachshund...you name it.

I thought puppymills were being cracked down? Very sad- to exploit the dogs...

Chihuahua that 'will grow to 6-7 pounds(they can't go in the show ring if over 5 pounds). Oh- one of my peeves....

Drives me crazy too all these people with their maltipoos or the labrodoodles...etc.....crazy when they could go to a pound and get a mutt which is what they are getting....Stacy

You and me both. I go to the Humane Society at least once a week to pick up possums and I see such beautiful dogs of all breeds and mixed breeds. Not long ago, one of the shelters I go to got in many, many small breeds...poms, chihuahuas, rat terriers, yorkies...from a puppy mill. Yes, they are still out there. I think it is almost obscene to buy a dog or a cat when there are so many that need homes. Plus, if you get them from the shelter, having them spayed or neutered and shots are included in the price, which is very
reasonable around here...sometimes as low as $25 if you are elderly or taking an elderly dog, and I've never known of one to be more than $65...which is a bargain on the vet care alone.

One of my dogs is a mini schnauzer x mini dachshund. I finally traced down her former owner...who is in prison now.
I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't pay a big price for her...because she is a "designer" dog. What an idiot.

Everyone who wants a dog or a cat should go to their shelters and look at the beautiful pets there. It will rip your heart out.

It is the most grueling race about which I've ever heard. Oh, this was a walk through the daisies in compared to adventure racing. Those folks are hard core. We did three runs each, and I only ran a total of 2 hours. It was hard - mostly due to lack of sleep, and sitting in the van stiffening up - but it was really fun. Most of the 2,000 vans were decorated, quite a few teams wore costumes, or had matching shirts. The comaraderie was really great. Everyone cheers for each other. The volunteers were the total best. I can imagine wanting to run and participate, but you've really got to appreciate someone who will voluntarily spend 5 hours directing tired cranky people to the next baton exchange, parking space, porta-potties and road turns. Our team, and as far as I gathered, most teams, just had runners in their vans. Six runners per van (usually a mini-van), and one runner drove while they weren't running their leg. Maybe the elite teams had staff like Rob says. They've got sponsors too. And WOW were they ever fast. I got passed like I was running backwards by one of the elites. He had to be doing sub-5 minute miles. Probably easy for him - that section was only 3 miles long. Wish I could figure out how to move my feet that fast. It took our team 27 hours 35 minutes to complete the course. The elites did it in around 17 hours. Like I said, I spent all of about 2 hours running. The rest is all van shuttles, cheering, handing water to our runner, showering at high school locker rooms along the way, sleeping all wadded up in the van, and visiting porta-potties. There was a BIG party at the end. Music and food and a beer garden. About 20,000 people participate and I think they said 70,000 people go to the party. Next time I want to stay over - lots of teams get houses, condos, motels, whatever for the night. I doubt there was a haystack left to rent in Seaside last night. Great fun. rthummer: I have had long haired dachsies for the last 20 years or so. I am currently down to one, a red long haired. She is currently 15. Most dachshunds have a very long life. I have heard numerous ones living til 16 or 17. We got our first longhaired dachsie when we lived in the city and I wanted a watchdog because our neighborhood was not great. But we could not have a large dog because of our small apartment. Then we rescued the second one at 8 years old, she lived until age 16. She had a bad first half of her life, we rectified that and she was the best dog and she loved our kids. I grew up with a german shorthaired pointer and a border collie. So I was not sure if I would like a little breed. But I love those funny little personalities, they are clowns. Funny how you get attached to YOUR breed. I think it is because it fits so well with your lifestyle whatever that may be. That is what makes owning a pet enjoyable, it is a companion that should fit your lifestyle. Not an accessory to be cool. I can't believe people could not find the dog they like except in a petstore, with everything online now, you can get in contact with breeders of most any breeds anywhere now. Good luck all.

I'm not prejudice against certain breeds but I had a notion about pit bull owners. I realized that I never considered getting a pit bull because I assumed the type of people who liked pit bulls were macho-guys who wanted a tough dog they could show off and feel powerful with. Watching the Dog Whisperer changed my mindset and I would love a pit bull. One episode called 'Chihuahuas From Hell' showed a Chihuahua named 'El Diablo' who controlled all the dogs at a pit bull sanctuary. This goes to prove that its not size but energy that controls dogs. I think small dogs get away with behaviour that larger dogs could never get away with. People focus on their cuteness and don't discipline them equally (thinking they might somehow hurt their little dogs). They can become spoiled and aggressive because they don't have boundaries and limitations. Some people don't see small dogs as dogs, they become their babies/children. Dogs need to be fulfilled as dogs otherwise they lose their identity. When it comes to breed its important to look at what the dogs have been breed for. Herding dogs may not feel challenged if their herding instincts aren't fulfilled. Hunting dogs, tracking dogs, dogs trained to do jobs need stimulation to fulfill that side of themselves. Walks, games and even using outside sources (like where professionals have dogs herd sheep or track stuff) can help meet a dog's needs. At dog parks your dog will sense the energy of other dogs. Some they may be uncomfortable with and then you should observe the behaviour of those dogs to learn what energy is not good for your dogs. I would never avoid a dog based on its breed but on its behaviour and that of its owners. If the owners are talking on a cell phone and ignoring their dog completely their dog is left up to its own common sense which sometimes isn't there.

Rescues get puppies ALL the time! It's breeding season down south and they are euthanizing entire litters every day. I just got a plea for a litter of what looks like purebred Labs that are going to be gassed in one of those rural death camps. I don't know where you live but the chances are that you can get something you will all be happy with as there are so many litters now. What concerns me is your price range. It's practically nothing to be honest and you won't find a breeder who will sell puppies for that unless they are a mill or just making a buck off their female. You need to drop the idea that you can train your dog to stay in the yard. It's not going to happen. The dog will stay until something catches his or her attention and then the dog will be off like a shot. They think on about the level of a 3-4 year old child and are very distractable and very likely to forget rules if they get excited. A friend lost her obedience trained Sheltie this way. Teddy had every obedience degree in the US and Canada but one day she took him out to get in the car, he saw something across the street and dashed in front of an oncoming car. Without a fence you absolutely can't trust a dog to stay in the yard. So, you end up having to tie them up to keep them safe. By the way, getting a puppy is taking a chance on a future dog. You can't really tell that much about a dog's personality as an adult by the way it is as a puppy. Like people, puppies change as they grow and today's peppy dog could end up being a couch potato and vice versa. Puppies are fun, messy, expensive, loud, exasperating and will love you to death. From your original description of what you wanted in a dog I was actually tempted to tell you that what you want is a pit bull. Your description fits my two to a T. ;)

I can't believe your shelter is that cheap....I was shocked when I saw some doxies that could have passed for Eddies twins on the at the tulsa shelter...I went to their website....they were 225 to adopt ONE....I didn't pay that for any of my 3 dogs....2 doxie and a golden...I was shocked at the price......I guess they all got adopted though I went back later to just look again and all 3 were gone....Stacy

grinch- When a 'rescue' wants a fee of $200-400- is that really a rescue? I look on Petfinder alot- for either a chihuahua or a dachshund, and am shocked at the 'rescue' prices! Thy sometimes have a comment, that the money is 'reasonable' to cover costs. I have not paid hat much for my private owner/breeder for a nice dachshund pup. What is he deal- are some of these 'rescues' on Petfinder really a rescue, or breeders trying to pull on your heartstrings???

Rescue's don't base the fee on one particular animal. It's the cost to rehabilitate animals that are sometimes diseased or hurt that need a lot of medical attention and the cost of feeding and taking care of the ones that don't get adopted. Also spaying and neutering and vaccinations, bedding. Not to mention what they're paying for shelter and insurance. Believe me, the rescues that I've been involved with are not making any money.

I visited our local dog pound one time in late winter and was amazed at all the pure bred dogs in there. I asked about it, and the employee told me that the dogs are dumped at the pound by the pet owners before Christmas so that they can buy a puppy for Christmas. Can't believe it!!!!
