The Kitchen Table

I'm going to be away for a week.

I won't be able to do the Recipe of the day tomorrow. My Mom is in hospital and so I'm going to visit her and stay at her apartment.

Also, next week starting Feb 9 - 16, DH and I will going on vacation. So, please, anyone, everyone, feel free to start the thread without me.

If it has sprouted it is starting to grow. You can retard the growth by keeping it in a cool part of the room. A week is not that long; and it will often take 6-10 weeks before it blossoms. Keep it barely moist for now, unless you want to wait for it when you get back. It will be fine.

Using it around the orchard trees or in among the vegetables? If in among the vegetables then I'd suggest some in-depth research first into its ingredients and the effects of vegetable crops. Specifically trifluralin. There have been some previous discussions here about its use around vegetables but I don't know if they are still available or not. Dave

Thank you, everyone! And yes, Trailrunner-- exactly-- I work from home teaching online. It is definitely a step in the right direction. My DH was really helpful for the first 2 weeks after the baby was born. Then he went back to work, and stopped helping. He is actually doing less than he did when I was pregnant, which is not that much to begin with at home. I have new jobs now! It has always been this way . . .no surprises. Before we were married, we were engaged but living together. I was working full-time and going to school. I had tons of work to do for work and school at night and on the weekends, but he did not help. Thought he'd change once we had a baby (ha, ha, dumb of me). Thought he'd change once we had a baby and I started working (took the baby with me) AND was going to school. Thought he'd help when he was unemployed for 8 months, and I was still working (with the baby) and going to school. Thought maybe when we had more kids . . .nope. When I took this job 2 years ago, I was 8 months pregnant with DD #4. I thought he would help more, esp. when I actually had the baby-- why? Why did I think that? Obviously I am not a quick study! I'd worked before (from home also, with a baby under a yr) and he did not want to help at all. So, nope, he was just resentful when he had to hold the baby and take over earlier with the other kids so I could do work. This morning, when I woke to find that the dishes weren't finished and there was a big mess to clean up (I did work last night, and then took the baby), it made me more sure of my choice. I cannot even hope he'll change, so I just have to change myself. I admit, however, I am having a hard time not being very resentful. I am hoping that having more time to myself will help. And BTW-- we already went to counseling. When the topic of helping more came up, my DH said he did not want to have to jump right in when he came home from work. (We had a newborn.) Guess what the counselor suggested? That DH get a BREAK when he got home. I could not believe it-- I said, Where is my break? DH got a lunch break . . .a commute . . .I had the kids ALL THE TIME. The day before I went into labor, I had finished presenting my porfolio for my master's. I was not slacking. I made DH admit what I was doing when he "took over." I was doing things like dishes and making dinner. Never was it so that I could have a break! Oh, well. I am finally learning. A long time ago we had decided that I would go back to work full-time once the kids were in school full-time. Seems so reasonable, but now I know I will be doing everything for work AND the house, kids, etc. No way. Good thing I love my kids so much. They inspire me every day.

Just looked at the link you posted. I never knew such a system was available! Your plants should do fine as long as you gie them a good soak just before putting them on the system.

Thanks for the good thoughts. Mom has been having some mini-strokes and is now in the hospital. They did a doppler test on her carotid artery and now tell her there is a blockage that needs to be removed.

In the meantime, we realize she can't live alone anymore, so my DB and I have been visiting lone-term care facilities. Unfortunately, the waiting list for these places are anywhere from 6 months to 2 years.

Anyway, my DSis is coming next week to help out so DH and I can still go on our trip to Costa Rica. I will have access to a friends computer so I can touch base with DB while there.

So is there anyone who would like to continue the Recipe of the Day thread from the 9th to the 16th of February? I'd really appreciate it!

Laurel, I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom. My DS is having surgery to-morrow as the result of a fall. Has to have a plate and pins in for a boken leg.

I'm glad we have good hospitals in London.

Yes, I understand the wait is really long for long term care and that is part of the reason that our hospitals are over crowded.

Did they tell you that she might, temporarily, be placed into one ouside of London until the one of your choice becomes available?

Do wish her the very best. I feel a certain closeness as she and my mother came from the same small town. I was priviledged to meet her once.

Ivamae, my Mom no longer lives in London. She moved to Burlington a little over a year ago, to be near my DB. Her doctors are in Burlington now so we would like to have her near them. Not only that, but my DB has only 1 car, and his wife still works, so we'd like her to be close enough for him to ride a bike or walk to visit her.

Anyway, DB called tonite and she seems to be doing well. Not sure when she will be released, but I'm going there tomorrow to make sure the apartment is clean, laundry done, and fresh sheets on the beds, etc.

Thanks for asking about her. I've never forgotten that you came to visit when she came home from the hospital after her surgery, or Ed sitting with me when she was having her surgery, even tho neither one of you had ever met me or her. You are both sweethearts!

Thanks Petaloid! I appreciate it! Maybe if anyone has Marlen's recipes, you could post them.....?! A lot of people here don't know Marlen, so this might be a way to remember her.

So I will do Sundays recipe, and then I'll be away, basking in the hot sun on the beach.........*sigh*...........I can't wait.
