Anyone have a giant pinboard/bulletin board from PB or Ballard

I've been thinking about this for at least a year. We have a ton of great pictures from our trips, etc., and no good place to display them. We have a big wall in our front foyer (which no one uses -- everyone uses the back door) that would be perfect for a big bulletin board where I could display a lot of pictures with nice pins. I'm looking at the linen pinboard at Pottery Barn or one of the framed ones from Ballard. Just wondering if anyone has experience with either of them. When I have gotten the smaller "fancy" bulletin boards at Home Goods or Marshalls, the bulletin boards have been really cheap feeling and I can barely get a push pin in them. I want something a little more refined since it is going in my front hall. It would hang over an antique dark wood church pew that is 4' long so I'm looking for something around 3' x 4'.

And yes, I know I can make one. That's where I started maybe a year ago, thinking I'd do that (I think I even asked about it here) and that's what stalled me. I'm never going to make it myself, so I need to just get on with it and buy one that someone else has made.

I had a very large Ballard one and it looked great and held up well.

Thanks. Because I am impatient, I ordered the linen pinboard from PB because it was just the size I wanted. I might actually frame it, though, in a dark wood frame to match the dark wood bench that will be under it. DH is actually the one driving this "decorating project," which never happens. He is so excited!

I have looked at our photos and this is what we have--- baby pictures in my bedroom, and camp and grad pictures of the kids in their bedrooms. Pictures of our actor son in plays (or rather the advertising photos for them), pictures of our daughter at the beach or dancing, Christmas pix of the kids all together, photos of our parents in knee pants and sailor suits, pictures of me in a fencing match, pictures of my obviously loaded, handsome parents at a Washington cocktail party, of my parents in New Zealand, our family in Scotland, etc. The point is that these are all pictures of interest to us, happy moments in our lives and not studio portraits, school pictures or "sittings" outside that are obviously professional. The latter are much better quality, of course, but they don't show much more than the posed people, and to that end they aren't that interesting to look at. Our photos are for our memories and pleasure, and that's why they are almost all in private rooms.

My theory in the Analysis thread is that a lot of the merchandise is the same as before, it is the presentation that is so dramatically different. I like a certain amount of it, just not the presentation, but of course they can't mix it in with other things that they don't make--its a catalog, not a magazine. Pottery Barn always has accessories that I find interesting, only to also find that they are not offered in the catalog, they are unique vintage items. (They have started selling them off on the website) I read the bio of Mr.Friedman Restoration Rewired and something about it really depressed me. His father died when he was young, he was a D student in Community College and he worked as a stockperson at GAP, and was 'discovered' because he had a talent for merchandising. I think it is obvious that he is an intelligent business person. There have been complaints that he has turned the merchandise into a very personal vision. I think that deep down this is Gary Friedman's vision of how "rich people" live--overscaled and over the top, and too busy to track down the genuine article. Now that he is rich, he is creating his vision of what it is to live rich. This reminds me of the pre-Martha Stewart days of K-mart when it was determined why an odd assortment of items --particularly waterbed sheets and king sized bed sheets--may not be readily available in their stores in white, but they were available in deep blue, burgundy and hunter green. The reasoning behind this is that these three colors were the most popular colors for certain luxury cars of the day including Jaguar. Sampling of the demographic who shopped at K-mart at the time revealed that they thought these colors "looked rich" and also that while they could not afford a Jaguar, they could afford things in Jaguar colors.

I just purchased a rug off of Ideeli. This site sales samples and maybe overstocks and is mostly clothing but every week adds new household and decorating items. A friend told me about it after she purchased a duvet for her bed. I got a great deal on a rug! The rug is gorgeous but I was really nervous ordering! I bought a dress, too :) Now I check it twice a day. They put deals up for a couple of days and then take them off. Oh, I looked and looked and looked and sat and sat and sat ... eventually ended up with these from Ballard Designs: Context: wanted some warmth (the rush seats) to bring in some of the pine we have in the room (breakfast table, and a couple of armoires and a hutch), the gold in the marble, and the brass hardware. Also, the spindles on the legs added a bit of curve to a room with lots of straight lines. I have another French country-ish armchair, with rush seat and spindle legs, elsewhere in the room. The black finish echoes the soapstone counters. The stools have been great. Kids are older, so the rush hasn't gotten dirty. It does leave marks on the back of your legs when you wear shorts, so I bought some cheap cushions at World Market for summer use. The black finish is starting to get a little worn, where we put our feet, but I figure black is easy enough to paint over.

I think your solution is a great one, Sue. It will be interesting to see how your DH adapts it to work with the bench in your foyer. Don't forget to show us the final results.

My husband has been working on getting several of these made for us to add to our soon-to-be-open Etsy store. Just before Christmas, he made a special one for me, to go on the wall on my side of our bed. I have been ill for quite a while and I'd been wanting one to use for all the sweet cards I receive, in addition to pics, an easily visible calendar and the various reminders from school, church, etc.

This one is 28"W X 22"H, covered with a beautiful sage burlap. To add a nice contrasting 'frame', he taped off the sides and used some spray paint left over from another project. Last, he added some really pretty oil-rubbed bronze knobs to the top, which we also already had. I think they mimic push-pins and look as though they are actually attaching the board to the wall. They will be great for holding the goodies we all love to hang - like necklaces, chains, ribbons, etc. The picture does NOT do it justice, but I absolutely adore it ~ especially because he made it just for me! (BTW, he always reinforces the frames, so it very sturdy.)

He has made several that look very similar to the ones from Ballard, with the nail-head trim, and some with GORGEOUS frames. He has taken several custom orders from friends and family members. I'll have to get those pics from his computer so I can show you those. But for now, here is the one he made for me.
