Gifts from Close Foodie Friends

Here is the fabulous gift that came in the mail yesterday from mustangs. She knows I love her fig prosciutto salad that is dressed with fig balsamic, so guess what came in the mail...yep, Bistro Blends fig balsamic vinegar.

She also saw my collection of rolling pins when she visited here in May. So guess what else I got?

Peppi also brought wonderful gifts on her visit. A copper veggie grilling pan for the grill, 4 steak thermometers cause she knows that Roger always overcooks the meat, and a grill brush (She must have seen how skanky the old one had become).

I love my Cooking Forum friends all the time, (even when empty-handed,LOL) but I have to tell you, they could not have pleased me more with the gifts they brought me and sent me.

Okay girls, I am ready to get together again. Where and when?

Souvenir de la Malmaison would be my first choice since it's beautiful, fragrant and a great rebloomer. It forms a handsome bush which for me has been almost disease-free and has tolerated a lot of heat here. Will you be ordering from the Antique Rose Emporium? They have the largest own-root roses (as they claim) and should give the best results. The five I ordered from them recently are all doing very well. Ingrid

I agree - food is the way to go with a 20 something guy. We are big on barbeque. Chili is good too if he likes the hot stuff. I don't know who you can order from in Dallas but The County Line in Austin has great BBQ and I know they ship out. I know when I moved to San Diego California and went to any so called "Mexican" restaurant and tried to order chips and queso they didn't have a clue what queso was. Send him a can of Rotel Tomatoes and Green Chilies, velveeta cheese, and tortilla chips and he can make it himself! Mmmm...I'm getting hungry.

We had the same problem for years. We have a group of seven couples (all close in age). We would take trips together once every year or so but during the year we would take turns hosting a monthly dinner. Of course this always necessitated a hostess gift. All of us are comfortably off and at our age have everything (material) that we want or need. It drove me crazy because I was constantly being gifted with craft type items. I am just not into cutesy things and I had a difficult time coming up with items that I thought the other ladies would enjoy or use. I failingly ended up giving food items or fresh flowers. We all finally came to a consensus that we should stop doing hostess gifts and at Christmas put funds together to donate to a charity. Thank goodness! The pressure every month is off and we can give to those in need. It's a win/win.

Definitions are according to the person defining them. There's a few people here who are FAR more than just "cooks". Call them gourmets or whatever, they're far more into it than am I and I learn from them. I guess I'm more of a pragmatic gourmandic cook. (My term so it's my definition.) I like to cook. I specialize more in simple but tasty. I don't get hung up on plating. Unlike others, I eat with my mouth and taste with my tastebuds, and my eyes do neither. My eyes get me in trouble at times with the cliché "eyes bigger than stomach". I'd have probably been a good chuckwagon cook or farm cook. I like good quality ingredients. I like to eat out. When I eat out I like to get something I either can't do as well at home or don't have time to do it at home or something like that. While I do enjoy good food, I'm more in the camp of "eat to live" rather than "live to eat". With age and health issues I can't spend the time in the kitchen I used to. I miss it but don't get too worked up over it. I adapt. Enjoy simpler things made tastier. I'm pragmatic and I don't get hung up on foo-foo fads or following the outrage du jour. I avoid certain things but when they're not proven to be harmful I don't get paranoid if they're in my ingredients. I like to utilize good butcher shops and places with good produce but am aware that those options aren't always available. Justin Wilson said of himself something to the effect that he's not a chef, he's a d@mn good cook. He defined a gourmet as someone who likes all kinds of good foods while a gourmand was "a P-I-G HOWG!"

I especially like the Rolling Pin, because I love woodworking.

Like the Copper Veggie Griling Pan. It gave me an idea!

I have a very old heavy Copper Skillet,
that lost it's handle.

Holey Moley, it's like Christmas in July. What thoughtful generous gifts. I love the rolling pin. I've never seen anything like it.Your house looks very pretty, too.

To me she is the Gadget Lady of Tampa.

From the little time I spent with her, shopping, I took note, that she became Mesmerized.

While she was actually in a Kitchen Accessory Supply Store,
I had the impression that she imagined herself in a Museum.

All I can say is WOW! I love that pin, it's gorgeous, as is that grill pan!

Umm....so is there a recipe for that salad? It sounds delish!

Sherry, What wonderful gifts from Peppi and Cathy. Don't you just love, that you can look into your kitchen, and immediatly think of one of your cooking friends. I know I feel that way every day. Especially when I use the LeCreuset saucer pot that you gave me. It stays on my stove most of the time, ready for use;-)

I agree with Lou, that's an absolutely beautiful rolling pin. As you know, I just love wood and that's outstanding.

Of course I knew Cathy and Peppi would know exactly what to bring.

Sherry, That's very nice of you to share with the CF your surcies--and well presented. I really have tried a number of fig balsamics and find this to be the most flavorful.

I might add that Sherry, Roger, and Dexter are wonderful hosts. I so enjoyed being with them. Going from Peppi's beautiful home and hospitality to Sherry's is such a smooth transition.

I had the impression that she imagined herself in a Museum. Now that's funny Lou!

What great gifts for a great hostess and host! I can attest that the fig vinegar is the best, because Cathy gave me some too! What do you use it on?
The rolling pin is a beauty and of course the grilling gifts from Peppi are always welcome! Roger is awesome on that grill!
I've missed seeing y'all too!
