Inexpensive washer & dryer - in home for sale

We have our home for sale and my washer quit.

Can anyone recommend a decent inexpensive washer and dryer? We are living in the home at least until spring or summer so want something that does a decent job but doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Thanks for any information you could share. Jeanie

I would buy second hand set like from Craig's list or from newspaper. Now lots of people is getting rid of stuff b/c of foreclosure, moving etc. I bought my first washer like this (for 40 dollars)here in USA and lasted me 9 years - it was already 12 years old!! It was Maytag. Even after all those years only hose started to leak but I got me a new one.

The Whirlpool siblings at the low end are fine machines for the money. My cousin bought a set of Inglis for about $400 for the pair and a friend bought Ropers for a little under $400. Similar machines and they're both happy as could be with them. I nearly bought an Inglis dryer but got the deal on the Whirlpool Gold so I got that instead.

I assume you're going to leave the set with the house? The other advantage is these are ordinary basic top loaders that most people know how to use. If they're laundraholics they'd probably replace anything you put in anyway so I wouldn't spend a bundle on it if I were you.

BTW, what's wrong with the washer? Maybe it could be fixed easily. And do you really need a dryer too?

EMS_NC: I've been researching washers and dryers for my new construction house for about 2 months. I'm going with the GE Harmony HE TopLoad line, but while looking for sales I have also noticed LG Steam being on sale. So from what I can tell, LG w/d go on sale quite often at different stores; it's not like there is just a once-a-year sale at all stores. You might want to post this in the LAUNDRY forum, as there has been much discussion there about the LG Steam line and you may be able to get some feedback on pricing from major chains. Then how can it be that there are four of the direct-drive design machines in my family that have already lasted 19, 16, 10, and 6 years, and are still running usable? My parents have owned a 1962 Whirlpool (14.5 years), 1976 Whirlpool (18 years), and 1994 KitchenAid/Whirlpool (16 years and counting). The 1962 machine had bearings replaced twice in 14.5 years and they were bad again at the end. The 1976 Whirlpool ran the original bearings/clutch for 18 years. Their KitchenAid has had no major/mechanical repairs, nor has mine. Our experience is that service life has increased over the course of 30 years (1962 to 1994), although I agree that 1994 is 16 years ago so may not accurately reflect 2004 or 2010. Our experience doesn't negate your experience ... but likewise your experience doesn't necessarily apply globally to the product. Regards to the CSR outright telling you the machines are designed to last only 5 years ... that was likely an ad-lib, as I doubt the company would specifically instruct their reps to say that. What I've noticed is that in the past people were more accepting of having repairs done when a problem arose, such as a pump or water valve going bad, or even bearing replacement. Nowadays there's instant frustration and declaration that the machine is junk, no matter if the problem is small or large. A friend gave a Kenmore/Whirlpool toploader to me that they were going to toss out for a $12 broken drive coupler that can be replaced in 15 mins (they thought it was bad bearings). Another friend gave a Maytag washer to me that was leaking, I found a broken hose that cost a whopping $15 to replace. Neighbors gave my dad an Amana dryer that would run for a few mins then go dead. Problem was accumulation of lint inside and the motor needing to be oiled, which he and I did and then sold it. None of these were "worn out" machines, they just needed some simple, inexpensive repairs.

You should put this post into the Laundry section. Personally, I wouldn't use those quick-connects. I've had them pop off unexpectedly under pressure. Also, Teflon shouldn't be required since these connections all have rubber washers (no pun intended) in them. The guys who delivered my LG used a web strap (a pair) to lift the washer into position. The web strap resembled a tow strap for a car.

Maytag EpicZ washer/dryer

I just logged in to this forum looking for information on hte EpicZ. I have space limitations as well and had been set on the LG stacking with dryer controls on the bottom of the dryer. Last week when I went to place my appliance order, I learned that LG has discontinued this model. They had only 2 dryers left and both were electric. Since I am set on gas I decided to consider my other choice the, Frigidare gallery. The gallery is an OK machine and I had one in our last house. Today the appliance SP emailed me about the EpicZ, saying that it is shorter and less deep than most others so I am hoping that this may be a good alterntive.

cynic, the washer is one of the first Maytag Neptune FL, which we have already put a ton of money into and don't want to repair again. The dryer is probably over 15 years old, so thought we would sell it for what we could get out of it. The set will go with the house so thought we would put in something inexpensive that I'll use until we leave, but will look nice when the house is shown to prospective buyers. Thanks for the info on what you recommend - I will definitely check them out.
czeckchick2, I have checked on craigslist and so far haven't found anything.
We are rural and about an hour and a half from any appliance dealer so will keep checking craigslist, etc. until the weekend and then go in and check out the ones cynic has recommended.

If you don't find anything on craigslist in your area, check your local/area newspaper for yard and garage sales in your area this weekend. I see washers and dryers for sale all the time in our local paper, usually $50 singly and $100 for a pair.

also if you have any small local community papers that come out every week look in there. we have something called Community Currier that comes in the mail every week which is a good source for classified adds. the adds are cheaper to buy than the daily papers so many people will place adds in those.

IF you want a new set and want a front load washer the Frigidaire is not too expensive, not complicated to use and looks decent. mine has worked well for me. other than that buying a low end Whirlpool is a good bet for the the average home buyer in a started home or any area where young families are moving that are just starting out in a home of their own. They will be just pleased to have one there and not have to worry about buying one. Now if its an upscale neighborhood you may want to not be so cheap as to turn some picky buyers off.
