How to talk to Dad about assisted living...? (long)

Okay, there are 4 of us "kids". I'm the oldest at 61...3 girls, 1 boy. Youngest sis lives in hometown where Dad is and Mom is in nursing home with Alzheimer's. I live 90 miles away, the middle sis and only brother live 4 hrs. away in the same town.

Mom has been in a Home for 3 years. Dad has been declining for the years leading up to that and especially so in the last 3 years. Dad has supper with Mom every night and youngest sis goes 4 nights a week. Youngest sis has to "walk" Dad through things on a daily basis any more. She works a full week and is pooping out...soon, she may start declining.

Dad knows he's losing his memory (hope it's not Alzheimer's too). We can't imagine the fear and loneliness that he must feel. He talks about moving to Assisted Living, but they were there once for a month after Dad had quadruple bypass and couldn't drive, etc. and Mom was still living at home, so they went there together. Well, it was a "mell of a hess"! She couldn't remember that Dad had had heart surgery and when he (or we) explained things to her, or he showed her his incision, she still didn't get it....she wanted to go home...period!! He also was confused about why they were there..."no one told him he couldn't drive for 6 weeks...no one told him he was supposed to go to local hospital for therapy after his surgery...etc." He'd been driving Mom around the county and into the next 2 counties for the previous 2-3 years, because she needed to be "going somewhere". So, they were stuck for 30 days in the Assisted Living apartment.

Now, it's time to help him make a decision. He shouldn't be living alone. He hasn't given up all hope of Mom coming home to live with him...."even if she needs someone to help out". We don't think he'd survive a move into the nursing home with her. Although he's usually complimentary about the staff, they would never measure up if he were there 24/7. As he tells us while looking us in the eyes and raising one finger..."Your Mother is #1!!"

They've been married for 63 years and are known as "the love affair of the county". Mom had polio in the 50's...iron lung for weeks, hospital for months...and Dad was with her in Denver every day for quite awhile, then every weekend for months. We 3 girls (no brother at the time) were placed with relatives...well, middle sis and a cousin also had polio then and were in Children's Hospital while Mom was in another one and when Sis and Cousin were dismissed they went to Aunt's home where she gave them therapy, etc. Youngest sis and I were at another Aunt's house.

Whew! Quite a story, huh? Anyway, Dad was credited with "saving" Mom and has always been at her side. She was left weakened in one leg and one arm. So, since he never gave up on her then, he's not about to now.

I don't know...maybe I'm just purging here. If any of you can make enough sense of this to chime in with advice, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks for listening,

Leslie/KS
