...especially those with "delicate" stomachs, should not have a late evening nosh of raw cabbage.

Harry loves raw vegetables. Broccoli, green and red bell peppers, tomatoes, carrots, and sweet potatoes are some of his favorites. Tonight he added a new favorite...raw, chopped cabbage. It had been destined for the "Bubble and Squeak" for our (meaning the humans') dinner.

He ate a large, healthy, crunchy amount before I noticed he had gotten into the prep bowl.

Poor Harry.

Poor Carol.

Poor Wes.

Heck, even poor Sam, but he doesn't seem to mind.

Some people cook the ingredients all together in skillet. I like to make patties with mine and go vegetarian with potatoes, cabbage, onion, garlic. I cooked Wes a sausage to go on the side.

Some of you guys underestimate the strength of raptor birds, including the red tailed hawk. I am from Albania and all my life was in contact with birds. I breed canaries, pigeons,chickens,rabbits and other animals. Several times we had to experience episodes involving birds of prey which were a permanent threat to our birds and animals. Once we had a lamb that disappeared and only days later we found parts of the carcass about three kilometers away (about 2 miles). Not far from there was a nest of turkey vultures. We concluded that it was the vultures that had killed the lamb. The lamb weighted about 8-10 kilograms (about 20-24 pound). It was summer time and we knew that it was not a wolf because they never (almost) kill lambs in that time of the year. Now you do the math; the lamb was at least 3-4 times heavier than the vulture. In another episode a hawk took a pigeon almost from my hand; I was holding the pigeon when all of a sudden a hawk was plunging toward me and I released the pigeon because confused and scared. In matter of tenths or hundredths of a second the pigeon was under the hawks claws. Several other times we had pigeons or chickens killed by birds of prey. I am not proud to say it, but I had to kill several hawks over years. I was young and only saw it as a threat and I believed that it was my right to kill them in order to defend my birds. In another occasion we captured a hawk and kept it for several days in a cage. It refused to eat for 4-5 days, and after advice from my father I released it. Anyway, my advice is for all of you who have animals weighting under 10 pounds to not underestimate the strength of birds of prey. They can carry up to 4 times their body weight. Be careful guys

sportsmen contribute $54 per second, thats 1.7 BILLION dollars annually towards conservation which pretty much underwrites the protection and management of the wildlife of this nation. They do this primarliy through the self imposed taxes paid on every item used in outdoor sports. A basic fact is this: withoout sportsmens dollars the only wildlife to be enjoyed would be in zoos. I ca best speak of Pennsylvania wildlife as this is where I have spent my 60 years of life. my son is employed by the Pa. game commission and I am friends with WCOs and others who work in the field. Pa. has an expanding population of Bobcats, they are doing so well there is now a trapping season for them, a limited number of permits are given for their harvest. The Elk herd has grown to the point we have a season for their harvest. the state can only maintain so many of these large animals. Of course the black bear population has expanded so greatly they are now habitaing areas they havent been in for generations. They are harvested in a 3 day season in record numbers and at record weights. turkeys, well they are much like the deer, pests in some areas. Sportsmens dollars have purchased over 11/2 million acres in Pa., not 1 cent has come from another source. This land is dedicted to wildlife habitat. Sportmens clubs, local & national, such as Pheasants forever, Ducks Unlimited, The Rocky Mt. Elk Foundation and many more spend millions of dollars and provide many thousands of man hours dedicated to wildlife conservation; without these clubs and their members, there would be little to talk about re: wildlife. there just wouldnt be any. most sportsmen have a great appreciation for wildlife of all forms, they are the true conservationists. I applaud your personal efforts at aiding wildlife 1 animal at a time. Of course there are many non hunters who appreciate wildlife and are conservationists; these and the American sportng persons are doing a good job. What a pity we have those few slobs who give hunting, fishing and other outdorr activities a bad rap., I hope you are able to tank the sporting community for their efforts to gaurantee wildlifes future. without their efforts, you would be able to spend your rehab time at other endeavors.

I am so sorry you are in this situation. It is definitely heartbreaking. And yes, you should rehome these dogs. I don't have to go into any explanation...Calliope's two posts say it all. I would like to add that I think a breed specific rescue is the way to go, for reasons mentioned above. I had a dog that I had to rehome because she needed way more exercise than I could ever hope to provide. I loved that dog, but knew I could not do right by her. At 18 months old, she was adopted by a family with 5 acres in a rural area, and is happier than she ever could have been with me. It was hard, but it was the absolute right thing to do. About 6 months later, I adopted a dog from the St. Louis Senior Dog Project. She is about 9 years old and such a wonderful girl. I just adore her, and I think the feeling is mutual :) I didn't go looking for a senior, she was at an adoption day with several different rescue groups. The dog I was wanting to see (a 3 year old mix) was already adopted. I looked around some more, and found no other dogs I was interested in. But, I felt sorry for this old dog in her cage, so I asked to see her just so she'd get some attention. I had been looking for a rescue dog for awhile, and for whatever reason, this dog and I crossed paths, and I took her home. What I'm trying to say is that I know how it is to feel you have failed at adoption. But the situation you are in now is not good for you or the dogs, and there is nothing wrong with finding them new homes. It is the right thing to do. You will find your dog(s) someday. Best of luck.

thyrkas, it was lucky you posted a copy of your telegram here as they are no longer used by the Royal Mail in the UK and Dido would have been shocked to find a barrel of small, very hungry dragons on her doorstep. FEDEX doesn't cross the Atlantic. In fact over here I think dragons might be an endangered species which will give them a higher priority over mere humans. I just read of a TRUE case in the local paper concerning the first cousin to the dragon, the Great Crested Newt. A family (human) had been flooded out of their home during the bad weather of last summer. Months of delays by builders followed and then the area flooded again, this time from a blocked stream. It has been discovered that among the detritus of the 'blockage' is a family of Great Crested Newts which cannot be disturbed because of their protected status. 'English Nature' also noted several birds nesting in the area. So the unfortunate family must stay in temporary accommodation until the birds have flown and the GC Newts have decided to move on "contra bonos mores" as the poet might have said.

Thanks for posting the recipe, I was always curious about bubble and squeak as mentioned in movies. Just so happens I have some brussel sprouts that need cooked up.

this is our doggie food...Rice..Chicken Breast...Green Beans and mixed veggies

we cut down their Biljac by half and give them oodles of this...with a little chicken broth for good tasties!

JasDip, thankfully his reactions were limited to only the rather malodorous ones!

MarlinGardner, he's a Deutsch Drahthaar, a versatile hunting breed controlled through a German association. They hunt any and everything, from quail to bears. Harry and Sam are used mostly for ducks, geese, pheasant, grouse, rabbits, and squirrels. Some DDs are used as blood trackers to find people, live or dead.

Their hunting abilities are their only qualifies. There are no "breed standards" as to size, color, coat density, etc. They simply have to hunt, hunt hard, and hunt everything. We've never tried him on an elephant, LOL, but I'm sure he'd love to tract one, and then come running back to me because it would be "so scarry, Mom."

They are very kind, gentle dogs and don't know a stranger. Little dogs, puppies, children, even babies are handled with "kid gloves" by Harry. He is an absolute love bug, lap dog, sweetie pie.

Liz GA Harry had a modified BARF diet for his first year. Since he had no desire to eat (he wouldn't stay still long enough to eat even a small bowl of food) I tempted him by making "Groovy Gravy" to add to his dry food. It was made from brown rice, chicken thighs, broccoli, carrots. He was so active, and growing so fast, I was constantly trying to get calorie dense foods into him.

Lynn D I just love to share Harry photos. Hopefully I'm going to use my new camera and get some even better photos of my Mr. GQ.

About 2 1/2 years old.

Harry's a hunk! However, don't think I would have wanted to be around him last night, lol!

Liz, does that much rice cause your dogs to be constipated at all? I only ever use it if one of ours has the runs some, so became curious when I saw your bowl of food. I swear, it just needs a little Teriyaki sauce, and it'd be fit for human consumption, too:-)

Liz, I had thought Harry is a German short-hair pointer! They sure look alike, except the Drahthaars maye a little larger.

Im looking for food for our 2 jack russell,they dont like wet dog food,the one has poopy problems.what is your recipe,is it good for weight etc,doesnt give them alot of energy does it/?My jack russell doesnt need en
