Has anyone been able to do canning on a glass top stove?
Comments (22)Magnoliantn, I am not sure if your glass top is different than mine, but the first thing I made on my glass top when I got it was a marmalade.... which not being used to the setting I promptly boiled all over my nice new cooktop. From my reading you should clean your stove top with glass stove top cleaner. I use Weiman, a sample came with my stove. You spread it on, let it dry, if you have something really stuck on (like my marmalade the following day) you SHOULD be scraping it with a razor. You are wasting your energy and time trying to clean it with a scrubber. Glass tops are meant to be cleaned with a scraper. The marmalade came right off. That was over a year ago. I boil over more jam and jelly than anyone probably should. I made a cake today and used the stove top as my frosting area because my kids were using the counter for something else. If you are not using your stove top to cook because you can't clean it, you are doing something wrong, glass tops are smooth to be easy to clean, not to be difficult. And to stay on topic with the OP. I do can on it also. I use my 23qt pressure canner. I haven't cracked it or had an issue yet. I have found that on my full power burner I set it to 3.5 to get to 12 lbs of pressure and walk away. I had issues in the beginning because I fiddled with the temp too much. I had to run test batches to find the right setting on my stove, just like I had to with my old dial electric range. Good luck Here is a link that might be useful: Stove cleaner...See MoreCanning and flat top ranges
Comments (29)Thanks to all for your help! ksrogers, I will look for the stainless steel wire rack, and for the pizza screens suggested by silver_creek. Sounds like either would work. Shammie, I use my cast iron skillets on my glass top, carefully. Still looks great after 4 years. One skillet is just a little indented on the bottom but heats evenly. On the other hand, I have a stainless steel sauce pan, nice and heavy, but with a bottom more deeply indented. It has trouble coming to a boil and I've quit using it. So I've never tried the big canner. Good point about the jars bumping together and breaking. I was thinking only about them maybe not heating evenly if they touch. Good to know the heating isn't a problem. Here's a thought: could I tie a piece of poly baling twine around each jar to prevent them from bumping into each other?...See Moreglass top range / pots leave marks?
Comments (13)Breton, I've had the same range for 8 years and have HATED every minute! Bane of my existence. That sucker gets marked up just boiling tea in the kettle. Can't just wipe it off -- gotta use Bar Keepers Friend and elbow grease. Then rinse, rinse, and rinse again. Now, I've always been somewhat fastidious about keeping my pots clean, always scrubbing the bottoms with Brillo with every wash. So I can't attribute the range mess on dirty pots. And I use all kinds of pots - Calphalon, All-Clad Stainless, hard anodized, Revereware -- without exception, everything leaves a stain (or some kind of shadowing around the shape of the burner). It's so annoying -- can't just cook and wipe, gotta SCRUB. The good news is we're in the midst of a remodel, including the kitchen, and they're bringing in a gas line!!! Breton, you totally have my understanding. I wish I could tell you that over the years it gets better, but it sure didn't in my experience....See MoreRange top surfaces- Ceramic glass or SS?
Comments (2)I didn't see your question on the Appliances forum -- did you title it the same way? I can't speak about Electrolux, but I have cooktops with both surfaces. Ceramic glass can scratch from pan bottoms & stainless can discolor from high heat. Baked on spills may require a razor blade to remove from ceramic glass. Stainless may show scratches if vigorously scrubbed. Ceramic glass shows more "stuff" so you may feel compelled to clean it more. I think it boils down to what would bother you the most & what you think looks most attractive....See More- 18 years ago
