Good luck, Kim. Will you have to go just once for an evaluation or will there be several trips before they decide if you are a candidate for the surgery?

What kind of surgery requires this???

Does this have anything to do with your kidney transplant? I had to speak With a psychiatrist about getting on the transplant list. It was a female psych so I felt comfortable telling her I was scared. She "passed" me so now here I am , somewhere on a list about 300 patients long. Anyhow, Kim, good luck,I'm sure you'll do fine and be fine.

Doctors in Harrisburg pa. ,where Ill have transplant want patients skinny.They want me to lose 50lbs before transplant,so my dr suggested lapband surgery,Im having it in March so by June ill be ready for transplant.You must do this for the transplant and to make sure you know what youre getting into.The lapband surgeon said I wasnt over weight enough that he would like,normally wouldnt do it but he said he'll do it anyway because its for transplant.

jannie where do you live?If you live in big city it makes a difference on the list,my brother got his kidney immediately,no dialysis.
Theres a really overweight lady in dialysis they told her to lose 80 lbs before the lapband surgery.geeze I dont get how they think you can excersise &all on dialysis...You get a treatment 4 hours,you feel awful when you come out,weak,sickly ,exhausted ,you have next day off,go again the next.vicious cycle,dont wish that on anybody.
I only have to see the shrink 1 time.
im ready to get this all over with once.

Bulldinkie, I'm glad to hear you're getting closer to your new kidney. FWIW, my dear friend Jeanne was over 300 lbs and had high blood pressure and was nearly diabetic. Her doctor said she was sure to become diabetic and would need to get insulin shots daily. She asked "What can I do?" He suggested lapband and lose 100 lb. She did so and lost over 100 lb, she's in better health and still dieting. Good luck, Kim! I'll be praying for you, my friend!

A dear friend of ours had a transplant a little over a year ago and has done fantastic. It was amazing how his color came back instantly. He even says it was not at all bad to go through. It was hard for him to know that someone had to die for him to live. He received a letter from the donor family. They told him they were grateful to be a part of him having life. They plan on meeting this summer.

We sure hope all goes well for you, too. I think the time we spend thinking about all of this is so hard..

I have things lined up for me to be a donor at my death if possible. I can't imagine anything any better then being able to help someone like you, Kim. To know a part of me lives on in the lives of so many is so fullfilling.

a few things I've learned from a friend who had lapband 2 years ago...she has to keep getting her's topped off...(I guess they fill it with saline or something..)

But things that expand in the tummy...like breads and such, will often come back up...and soda, especially diet soda gives her pain and discomfort as well.

The first time she ate a slice of banana bread after her procedure(a few months later), within minutes..it was on it's way back up...and she still can't eat more than a bite or two. No sandwiches, no biscuits...last week she tried to eat a McMuffin...lost that one with in minutes..

I do think Lapband is harder to "cheat" than Gastric Bypass.

Kinda funny you have to go to the Shrink to shrink...LOL

Terri, my friend had gastric and had the same things happen to her. It' only now, about 5 years later that those are mostly gone. But now she has to be careful to NOT gain the weight back. that happenS

i went today odd,I filled out a dozen foorms I get in there he asks same questions that I answered on forms,but he said I seem to understand all about the surgery,no problems so he said he thinks I should get the surgery so I can live again..
as far as the lapband you have to go thru 6 classes they tell you up front no soda,no breads unless toasted,youll find out what your body will tolerate.Everybodys different as far as what they can tolerate or cant tolerate.But this is temporary a year from now youll be eating more.
Yes if youre losing too much they can control it with the saline.They poke 3 holes in your stomach,they put band over your stomach,tighten it,then you go to dr every so many weeks to get it tightened or loosened. From the stomach theres a tube that goes down beside belly button where they stick a needle into fill or remove saline.You have to have other health problems too to qualify...Your stomach goes from 40 ozs to 2oz.

I'm glad for you. I pray that both that surgery and your one later on go smoothly all the way around, with minimum problems. Thanks for your explanation on the lapband. I've heard bits/pieces before but yours tells me so that I understand it. I can't imagine going from 40 oz to 2!!!
