Need fixture help for vaulted ceiling over kitchen table

I just found this forum in time! We have just started building a new home (1st floor is being framed). The kitchen area over the table has a vaulted ceiling with a railing overlook from the 2nd floor. What kind of lighting do we put in that space? I think a hanging fixture with a 14' chain would look goofy but could spot lights really provide enough direct light for the table? Thank you so much for your suggestions!

Our kitchen has vaulted ceiling also, but not that high over the table, so we have a hanging fixture. We have a recessed light that illuminates the other side of the kitchen, where the ceiling is pretty high. It provides ambient light to that side of the room, but if our table were under it, I don't think it would throw off the right kind of light.

If I were you, I would reconsider putting a hanging fixture over the table. If you're concerned that a 14-foot chain might not look right, go to a good light fixture store and browse through some catalogues. You'll get good ideas on how to deal with your issue.

I would also use the long chain, I think because in your case I think part of the fixture might have to be above the 8 foot mark, and it will need some breathing room at the top. If the beams are too close to normal ceiling height, it will be trying to hang the fixture in a room that does not have this belvedere-like feature.

Make sure you know, what the length of the cord needs to be with the volume of the fixture depth added in. most fixture come with 8-12 feet of cord so that will be important. also if you want a rod look you will have to order additional rods. beige might be to close to the table color. shades of light artcraft restoration hardware

I regret the cathedral ceiling in our guest suite -- *not* cozy. (Love the one in our Library.) Thanks for posting the plans. I'm sorry, but I think this addition overpowers your existing house -- the height, the huge dormer that doesn't add space. (Where will you place your bed?) I can't understand the stipulation that the new addition's roof line can't exceed the existing...since it obviously *does*. The closet/bathroom section could be improved.
