Cold, cold and yes we had school problems and buses not running again and expect temps in some parts of ND to be 40 below. Please watch yourselves, driving, outside, pets older people do not need to go out, ask someone to get your stuff etc. But expect 30 above by this weekend, Melting, freezing, icy roads. Oh well, it is only ND, MN, WI, Iowa, etc Another mini mall closed due to too much snow on the roof and yes several farmers have lost out buildings due to extreme cold and heavy snow.

I honestly cannot even comprehend living in weather like that. I don't know how you do it. Here I am, thinking it's FREEZING at 50 degrees outside.

We're going below zero tomorrow, but nothing approaching your temperatures. The coldest I remember was -28, about 30 years ago. I drove home from work in heavily falling snow tonight, temp 9Âº. I was very glad to pull into my driveway.

Fortunately they are closing because they are getting older and tired of running the store, not because they are losing money. The bad thing for the economy is they are having trouble selling the building, and gave up on selling the business. They emptied it out by having these sales cuz the realtor said it would be better. That said, there used to be tons of "junk" shops around when I was young. They are mostly gone, non profit thrift stores have taken their place. I do miss them. That is a Fire King Peach Lustre plate. It had scratches in the middle as do several of the others. 2 of them are pristine and still have the gold stickers on them. I'll definitely save those. I did look on ebay and although a few things that I bought are priced high, they con't seem to be selling. The right buyer never came to their store, even at their occassional 50% off sales, so I'm not sure that I would have better luck finding the right buyer. The crystal stuff fits right in with my grandmother's wedding gifts that I like to use on special occassions. I'm glad to have it. Thanks for looking and commenting. Kathy

Headboard as trellis, fabulous idea! It's actually just sitting there because I pulled a bunch of stuff out of my garage yesterday to clean it, and took the pic before I'd put it back. Would you fasten the headboard to a fence? Or free standing? I can totally see that being very cute, but not sure where to put it. the shade garden would work out perfectly where you suggested, party, it's the only shady area on my entire lot! I had though of putting the patio back there, with the shade garden curving around it, but I'll consider the other suggestion of putting it to the right of the porch. I hadn't thought of having the veggie beds that close to the house, but it does make sense in a way. It get more sun there throughout the day. I'll have to think about that some more. I'm still trying to figure out how much grass to include in the plan. I want a bit, to lie on and walk in bare feet on, one of my simpler pleasures! But with such limited space (30x60) I don't want to give too much up to grass. I'll tinker with a drawing a bit, post it here, and you all can tell me if you think I'm on the right track :-) Thanks for the suggestions! btw, georgeanne, the wood was bought from a friend of a friend who works for a mill. They are untreated, kiln dried lumber ends for burning this winter for heat. My electric bill is shocking, so I'm trying to plan ahead this year and get wood laid in and an insert in my fireplace. That load was only $100! One more like that and I'll be set for the entire winter!

There are plenty of shopping streets/neighborhoods here that going to a mall is not a necessity. Not all malls are all covered here either, particularly Century City Mall, which has a parking structure, but you walk outside to go from store to store. Third Street Promenade is all outdoors, as is Rodeo Drive. Melrose Avenue is one of my favorite shopping streets, but I also like Sunset in the Silver Lake district. Hollywood and Highland also has a large central area that is open to the sky. There's really no need to cover these areas, since we don't have cold weather, and it's usually not too hot. Lowspark, you are not a weather wimp if you can handle living in Houston in the summer! I lived there when I was going to Rice, but I never managed to stay there in the summer. Rice closed for the summer when I was there - they didn't want to subject the students (and professors and staff) to the heat and humidity. DB had been telling me that Circuit City had been late with all their payments to Sony, and so we were not surprised when we found out that they were going into chapter 11. We bought a new TV recently and ended up getting it at Best Buy because they have a brand (Insignia) that got good reviews and was well under the employee discount price that DB could get from Sony for a similar LCD widescreen TV. I gave our old widescreen TV to the neighbors, for helping us move it out of the house. It was a rear projection TV and was huge!! I'm much happier with the flat screen TV, and our old TV, even though it was HD, was not compatible with Blu-ray. DB had bought a Blu-ray player a couple of weeks ago at a company sale (at Sony) along with an AV amplifier, but we could not get a picture on our old TV with it. Finally, I broke down and bought a new 47" Insignia flat screen LCD TV, and we're much happier with that. We only have a few Blu-ray discs, but we're starting to collect them. The old DVDs are supposed to look better on Blu-ray player, but it's difficult to tell. Lars

That title, "Sears Holdings" would lead one to believe that Sears is the parent company, but such is not the truth. Originally sears was was primarily a catalog retailer which started in Chicago in the late 1800's and was known as "Sears Roebuck & Co" and in addition to the retail operation they owned "Allstate Insurance" and a 50% share of Whirlpool Appliance Mfg (which accounts for why the majority of all Lady Kenmore Appliances were actually made by Whirlpool.) In the mid to late 70's Sears also acquired a Stock Brokerage & H.R. Block. The government then stepped in and declared that Sears was no longer a Retailer, but rather they were a financial group and primarily conducting banking operations with their credit cards, revolving charge accounts, the insurance company, stock brokerage and the tax consultants, so they officially changed the name from "Sears Roebuck & Company" to "Sears Financial Group". That was the downfall of Sears as we know it. Once they became a financial group, they concentrated on the business of making money, rather than retailing, and the retail operation just became one of their subsidiaries. It was about that same time that some marketing genuis came up with the idea of making Sears "Brand Central" so now instead of exclusively selling "Lady Kenmore Appliances" they were now selling all the major brands of appliances. The problem with that idea was now instead of maintaining the "Lady Kenmore" name as a high end, high quality appliance, they were relegated to just one of many, so the lady kenmore sales instantly fell off. (I guess the bean counters did not have the good sense to realize that they owned controlling interest in Whirlpool so they could basically get the lady kenmores at a much better price). It was then only a short time until they sold off the majority of their stock in Whirlpool. As they continued to concentrate on their financial holdings at the expense of the retail operations, the overall general appearance of the Sears Retail stores began to fall off and their retail sales were continually in a decline. In the mean time, Kmart was originally founded as S.S. Kressgie 5 & 10 cent stores in the late 1800's and they continued to operate under that name until the mid 70's when they moved out of the little downtown 5 & dimes and started building larger stores in the strip malls, which they called Kmart and their corporate Headquarters at Benton Harbor Michigan was renamed "Kmart Holdings" Somewhere in the late 80's or 90's Sears was near bankruptcy and Kmart was feeling the pinch from Walmart so they bought "Sears Financial Group", in hopes that they could revitalize Sears and broaden their market share by moving up to the more upscale clientele. Shortly after Kmart acquired Sears Financial Group they changed their name again, this time to "Sears Holdings" So even though the list officially came out of Sears Holdings, it is in fact Kmart who runs the show.. Now, taking this to the next logical conclusion, according to statistics that were posted on Yahoo about 6 months ago, Malls are seriously on the decline. In fact over 30% of the malls that were built in the early 70's are now either closed or scheduled for closing soon so Sears may not have to make a big payout to close a store in a mall, they may already have advanced notice that the mall itself is on borrowed time. It has already been reported that most of the malls are giving Sears a substantial break on their rental because the malls feel that having a Sear store attracts a lot of customers to the mall itself.

We are supposed to hit 13 below...if we hit that, it will be the coldest in 6 years.

Seems like all the northern states (I'm considered midwest) are getting hit hard this winter...

I think it must be all that Global Warming....Baaahhahhahah

It is 6 degrees out now, with it expected to get colder over night, and then the snow is supposed to start again tomorrow and the wind. Lots of warnings around here. A small town near me has a sign out that say from Nov 10 - Jan 10 our snowfall was already at 186 inches. This is still early winter here for us. Sure seems like a looong winter to me. I am sick of it already. Hope everyone that is in this cold blast stays warm and safe. It's a good idea if we all would check on some of our elderly neighbors just to make sure their water pipes are okay and they have heat, not to mention food. They don't need to be out in this weather. Take care everyone.

It sounds like much of the country is experiencing cold temps except the west coast. Even Georgia has 32 degrees!

23 right now in North Mississippi. In the non heated, but
enclosed patio it is 40. I hope my plants stay safe!

-22 this morning...windchill -38. I don't want to go to work! At least it's too cold to snow! Don't have to worry about the dogs wondering, they go out, go potty and get right back in. I hate driving into work, must have frostbitten my fingertips at one time, they burn so bad inside my gloves every time I'm outside right now.

I'm thinking about all you Northern peeps. Stay safe! It is 37Â° now at 7am with an expected high of 58Â°.

DIL is picking me up in a little while to take me to my doctor's appointment in the city. I'm so glad we don't have the snow and ice to have to drive through.

-40 in DD and the boys city! We are talking air temp guys. NO windchill. I am so glad the boys school and day care will make them stay inside. First one I thought of when I saw the low for DD's city was poor Diesel the doxie they have.
No one needs to be out in this.
The way it started dropping at 5 pm yesterday I thought we were going bottom out. It was only -29.

Yep i hear starting Friday a gradual warm up. By Sunday 30 ABOVE! I almost hate to see it tho because if there is a wind it will blow snow across warm,wet roads and stick and make ice skating rinks!
BUT I am sure not going to pass up something above zero for temps!! With all this snow it won't feel like 30 anyway.

Can you tell I am in a great mood this morning? LOL

It's -15Â° right now (Nebraska). With wind chill it's -27Â° Weather bug says it'll be in the low 40's Wednesday. Whoo hoo. Break out the shorts.

This morning it was about -30Â° here sans windchill. And this weekend should up to +30Â°. 60Â° difference in a few days. I think my critters know it's bad out there and they're coming and thanking me for rescuing them. BTW, it's 12:30pm, bright and sunny, clear sky and has shot up to a toasty -12Â°!

Reminder for folks with water pipes on exterior walls, it's a good idea to leave the cupboard doors open for air circulation. Will help keep them from freezing if it's prone to freezing in these temps.

I REALLY should be baking something.... but what?
