Cold, cold and yes we had school problems and buses not running again and expect temps in some parts of ND to be 40 below. Please watch yourselves, driving, outside, pets older people do not need to go out, ask someone to get your stuff etc. But expect 30 above by this weekend, Melting, freezing, icy roads. Oh well, it is only ND, MN, WI, Iowa, etc Another mini mall closed due to too much snow on the roof and yes several farmers have lost out buildings due to extreme cold and heavy snow.

I honestly cannot even comprehend living in weather like that. I don't know how you do it. Here I am, thinking it's FREEZING at 50 degrees outside.

We're going below zero tomorrow, but nothing approaching your temperatures. The coldest I remember was -28, about 30 years ago. I drove home from work in heavily falling snow tonight, temp 9Âº. I was very glad to pull into my driveway.

Actually, ALL of Hancocks stores are closing. Over the years it has become increasingly difficult to find anything worth buying there. But, still is was there if you needed something that you could settle for. Quiltsandquacks, it is not that simple that people did not support the store. There are many complicated factors that contributed to this. I was always there to support the store when the store had what I wanted to buy. Over the last decade, in particular, Hancocks let ME down with the poor selection and the drastic move towards fleece inspired awfulness. I kept visiting the store and leaving empty handed until I quit going in as often and I quit buying much of anything. If they still had the quality of selection that they used to have, you can bet that I would be in there shopping! I can't buy what they do not offer. And, I do not wish to buy what they offered. They have the fleece on at 80% right now. There is still an awful few tons of it left. It seems that I am not the only one who loathes that cheap stuff. It is my opinion that the overstocking of cheap fleece is one of the contributing factors in their demise. But, there are many factors that have lead to this closing. There are the dynamics of corporate structure and changing demographics, to name but a couple. It is almost an old fashioned idea to assume that just because there are customers that there is success in business. Corporations are convoluted entities and do not always follow that path. Simple business models do not always apply anymore. Add to those factors the fact that there is no production of the old fashioned fabrics that many of us grew up sewing with. The vendors cannot get those fabrics because they are not being produced anymore. We have much less land left for producing nice plant and animal based fibers in this world and we have an suffocating amount of old plastic jugs and petroleum based chemical that get made into "fabrics". THAT is what that fleece is made of, recycled plastic milk jugs. Ugh!!! The Walmart in my community has recently begun to carry a few fabrics, again. For a simple cotton they have some product by Waverly, I think. It seems fairly decent for what it is. Ultimately, Hancocks let ME down and quit selling the things that I needed to continue to sew. So, now they are gone. I see that there are some newer types of sewing businesses that are opening up, but they seem to have a different direction. They seem to be located in more affluent parts of the burbs and cater to people who have money to come in, take classes on making things like hand bags and piecing, They have become a vendor for people with a lot of disposable income, but not a vendor where just real everyday sewing people will go in to buy a couple of yards of wool crepe or some nice cotton twill or swiss dot. They are more likely to offer you the chance, for a price, to come in and buy an independent pattern for a child garment and the "kit' to make it with. Then, you can spend $30 to make a kids tshirt that you could have gone over to Kohls and bought for five bucks. It is more like hobby sewing than like old fashioned sewing that was born of passion, creativity and necessity and supplied by numerous fabric stores in almost every small town.

I'm coming in a bit late on this, but I had to jump in... We have ordered almost identical cabinets (in white) -- and we are going for a rather "plain" style. In my previous house I installed shaker-style cabinets, in natural maple (1995). I discovered that dirt of all sorts gets caught in there where the bottom stile sits square against the back panel, and it's hard to clean. The maple mostly hid it, but, with white cabinets, any dirt/debris is much more noticeable and it's harder to keep looking good. I discovered that some people avoid shaker cabs and get beading specifically to reduce that problem. Also, cabinets with a bead are actually more "classic" than shaker style. (Trust me; our old cabinets are from 1916 and they are recessed-panel with a lot of beading.) Shaker will always look good, but it is a bit trendy and is more likely to "date" than the timeless door you selected. So, there are two reasons you might not have thought of why you have made the right choice for the long-term! Re countertops, we started with very dark granites but have ended up choosing a light one, which should not show fingerprints so much. (That's not the main reason we went lighter -- it was mostly aesthetics -- but that was a supporting factor in our shift.) Just something to think about if you hate those fingerprints!

In my town, Walmart has layed off many of its associates and cut the hours of most floor and door greeter employees to 20/week or less. One elderly lady, a checker, was telling those of us in her lane, that she was working 40 hours and now is only scheduled for 12 hours this week. I realize this is a tourist town, but this action is unwarranted - Walmart has THE MONEY to take care of its people - it just chooses not to. This scenerio isn't unique to Walmart - MOST retailers are doing the same thing, or worse yet - going out of business. I just don't know that these retirees/disabled workers are supposed to do to survive. It's such a shame that these older workers/disabled workers/uneducated workers and single parents are being displaced in this manner - they are the ones that made this country, by doing the grunt labor, and they can't just run out and get another job. They aren't working for low wages because they WANT to - they are forced to because of this economy - a real sad statement of the economical status of our country. One of my sons has several college degrees and can't find a job - even a low-paying job (he is currently working on his Ph.D)! His wife has a masters degree in forensic science and is working at a retail tourist shop because the government has a freeze on new jobs in her field of study!!! They live in Washington D.C. The economy is in peril FOR SURE!

We are supposed to hit 13 below...if we hit that, it will be the coldest in 6 years.

Seems like all the northern states (I'm considered midwest) are getting hit hard this winter...

I think it must be all that Global Warming....Baaahhahhahah

It is 6 degrees out now, with it expected to get colder over night, and then the snow is supposed to start again tomorrow and the wind. Lots of warnings around here. A small town near me has a sign out that say from Nov 10 - Jan 10 our snowfall was already at 186 inches. This is still early winter here for us. Sure seems like a looong winter to me. I am sick of it already. Hope everyone that is in this cold blast stays warm and safe. It's a good idea if we all would check on some of our elderly neighbors just to make sure their water pipes are okay and they have heat, not to mention food. They don't need to be out in this weather. Take care everyone.

It sounds like much of the country is experiencing cold temps except the west coast. Even Georgia has 32 degrees!

We've been blessed with beautiful sunshine in Oregon this week!

It's suppose to go down to 10 tonight. I dread that. It's
23 right now in North Mississippi. In the non heated, but
enclosed patio it is 40. I hope my plants stay safe!

-22 this morning...windchill -38. I don't want to go to work! At least it's too cold to snow! Don't have to worry about the dogs wondering, they go out, go potty and get right back in. I hate driving into work, must have frostbitten my fingertips at one time, they burn so bad inside my gloves every time I'm outside right now.

I'm thinking about all you Northern peeps. Stay safe! It is 37Â° now at 7am with an expected high of 58Â°.

DIL is picking me up in a little while to take me to my doctor's appointment in the city. I'm so glad we don't have the snow and ice to have to drive through.

We have been in the low 20's and high teens at night--barely making it to the 30's for day time highs. We are supposed to get down to 8 Friday night. We are in North Carolina. Sheila

I'm in Fl and I think its about 22Âº here, or thats what it said for this morning. Burrrrrrrrrrr, Its suppose to get up to 58Âº today.

-40 in DD and the boys city! We are talking air temp guys. NO windchill. I am so glad the boys school and day care will make them stay inside. First one I thought of when I saw the low for DD's city was poor Diesel the doxie they have.
No one needs to be out in this.
The way it started dropping at 5 pm yesterday I thought we were going bottom out. It was only -29.

Yep i hear starting Friday a gradual warm up. By Sunday 30 ABOVE! I almost hate to see it tho because if there is a wind it will blow snow across warm,wet roads and stick and make ice skating rinks!
BUT I am sure not going to pass up something above zero for temps!! With all this snow it won't feel like 30 anyway.

Can you tell I am in a great mood this morning? LOL

It's -15Â° right now (Nebraska). With wind chill it's -27Â° Weather bug says it'll be in the low 40's Wednesday. Whoo hoo. Break out the shorts.

This morning it was about -30Â° here sans windchill. And this weekend should up to +30Â°. 60Â° difference in a few days. I think my critters know it's bad out there and they're coming and thanking me for rescuing them. BTW, it's 12:30pm, bright and sunny, clear sky and has shot up to a toasty -12Â°!

Reminder for folks with water pipes on exterior walls, it's a good idea to leave the cupboard doors open for air circulation. Will help keep them from freezing if it's prone to freezing in these temps.

I REALLY should be baking something.... but what?
