Ugggh... chemo really sucks

I started on august 25th, had 2 cycles which were absolutely horrible, then had a 4 week break before radiation which was truly the worst hell of my life, then had another 4 week break before starting chemo again. That cycle i was given a 25% reduction, and it went really well, but now I am back on the 100% dose this week, and it has been tough- terrible neuropathy, hands and feet tingle and hurt, can't drink or touch anything cold.. i feel queasy and like i have been hit by a train. Emotionally when i am on the chemo breaks i am fine and positive and feel normal, but man when i am on this crap i feel depressed and wonder what i did to deserve to have this at 42 years old. If you are healthy, please count your blessings and take care of yourself. I have no family history of cancer let alone colon cancer and am a dietitian and always have eaten the right things.. i would have told you a year ago that i would never ever get cancer.. i just knew it would never happen to me. Boy was i wrong. My last treatment is february 23rd, and the end of that cycle is officially march 8th, My birthday is march 9th. What an awesome bday present this year!!

(((((((polarprincess))))))) visualize the end! it WILL be worth it. I will come to an end. I took shaklee pro biotics, and i think i really helped. I also listened to tapes... and are you taking the anit nausea medications?

Thanks.. i am trying to visualize the end.. Actually mayo recommended 4-6 months and this is my 4th month,, i am so tempted to just say this is it! They gave me some compazine and i have been avoiding taking it because i have heard it makes you crash bad and i don't want to crash any worse than now. I am taking probiotics as well. I am hoping within a couple of days it will get better but on my second cycle i was sick the whole 14 days so am a little worried...

I'm feeling much better now. I guess I just needed some support, perspective and time to get my head around the situation. I know that I am really fortunate. It was caught early. I have a great employer who provides a very good health plan. Kaiser has been very responsive - I'm generally getting appointments quickly when I need them and treatment is progressing as fast as my body will allow. I'm in so much better shape than many others facing this disease. Ideefixe, a lot of the credit for me getting the mammogram on time goes to Kaiser. By my nature, I might be as bad as Elizabeth Edwards at procrastinating about this - there is so much else to be done. But several years ago Kaiser made mammograms walk-in so I don't need to get an appointment to get one. And they really push the screening - in April they sent a letter saying that I should come in for my "yearly" mammogram even though I had had my prior one in August - apparently they don't care if you come in a few months early as long as you get screened. Then every few weeks I would get a reminder letter. And they also put the dates for any regular things like screening and vaccines on the bottom of the sheet that one gets when checks in for an appointment. So when August rolled around and I was near the facility, I decided I'd better drop-in and get the mammogram to stop the nagging reminders.

She's having problems logging in. This is the rest of the above update. 5/21- PT 5- avg 12 - miles 64 Surf City to Cedar Point. great day, rode strong. Got a LOT hotter !! Rode past part of Camp Le Jeune. The firing range. Great Great late breakfast. had ab OJ/mango drink in camp and a bagel and canned pears and coffee. Then we stopped and I had 2 sunny side up eggs and 2 slices of ham and 3 buttermilk pancakes...yum. We passed three little girls on the way here with a lemonade stand. It was $1 a glass...cute sweet gals and we all had a glass.... No lunch stop...not sure why I would need MORE food :) Stopped at a Lowes Grocery on the way and got a HUGE salad bar and an Arrogant "Bleeped out" Ale for dinner in camp..yum. Did laundry...I do the laundry for everyone every day...more on that some time in the future, Great forestry campground here in Cedar Point. If you ever get this way do check it out. Oh and we WAITED for the Rapture...what happened ????? 5/22 PT 5- Avg 12- Miles 73 Cedar Point to Ocracoke Island rode alone to mile 30. Met up with Bob and Pete and we rode to the ferry. Had a mediocre meal as we waited for the ferry. It is a 2 1/2 hr ride. The ride to the ferry is lots of marsh and bridges over the estuaries. Very beautiful but HOT and windy. We were glad to get on the ferry. We all slept most of the way...laid down on the long bench seats. Very nice. Staying at Black Beard's Lodge. Every thing here on the island is called Black Beard. Edward Teach was his name and he was notorious in these parts. Had dinner at the Jolly Roger grill and it was a great burger and fries and beautiful sunset pics...then the mosquitoes came out...ouch ! 5/23 Ocracoke to Cape Hatteras PT3- Avg 15 !!!! ( tail wind ) miles 53 SMOKINg speed. I looked down and was doing 23 mph at times !! Whew....had a bagel and cream cheese and coffee. Pete and Bob and I looked at the lighthouse and then walked out to the point where BB was killed by a Navy officer. supposedly anyway. We then got underway. We stopped at Pop's on the way finally to get some food. There was nothing for a long way. This is a most interesting bar. It was amazing the amount folks were drinking so early in the day...oh well. Had a burger and fries...great fuel !! Nice campground tonight. Walked on beach. Great pic with Blue the dog. 5/Cape Hatteras to Kitty Hawk PT 3:12 avg 12.3- miles 39 ate peaches and ripe banana in camp and 2 tiny donuts. Rode over BIG bridge. Stopped at a little store and had to get a Jimmy Dean sausage biscuit and microwave it in the store....not too bad but have had better :) Went on to Nags Head. Very large pretentious homes for most of the town till you get all the way in. walked around Kitty Hawk and listened to a presentation. Took two pics. Very interesting brothers. There is a peat bog fire in the area and the wind blows the smoke here at times and the air is very bad and then it clears. We are leaving tomorrow and part of the group ( two other women) are staying behind. It is hard but for the best. It will be me and the 3 guys....we get along so well and will all be better for it. We had lunch at Goombays and it was WONDERFUL !! Fantastic grouper sandwich. Also owner called and got us a great price on a motel. The holiday is coming and prices are up but we got a great place cheap. Pete and Bob and I went to the Red Lion and got supper fixings...you guessed it am sure...I got a pint...of Haagan Dazs...not Gentleman Jack!! Hasn't been that kind of trip this year....we are excited to be going on tomorrow...as a group of 4. Stayed at the Sea Ranch motel . Stopped and saw the Bodie Island lighthouse on the way here. TODAY !! 5/25 Kitty Hawk to Elizabeth City. Avg 13.4 Miles 52....we RODE fast. Felt so happy and light...all the guys are smiling and laughing now that we are 4 . Enough of that...it is over and done.

A friend gave me a little book called "No More Bad Hair Days" - basically little cartoons. Heather showed it around to those starting chemo and had the whole group in stitches (not good on bladders when everyone was given IV fluid overload.) One of the most useful hints, is to have your sister drink lots of very cold fluids such as iced water, popsicles etc. We froze water bottles. This will decrease the circulation to the mouth during the administration of chemo and lessen the mouth sores that can develop from the chemo by constricting blood flow to the mouth. Bring your own in case the fridge is empty at the clinic. There are drugs that can be given just prior to chemo that help with the nausea. Unfortunately, they cost about $20/dose here in Canada but well worth it. If hair loss is going to be an issue, your sister may find it easier to deal with it if she cuts or shaves her hair very short ahead of time. She will need to do this to get the best fit for a wig but it is less traumatic than watching it come out 4-5 days later by the handfuls. If she goes for a wig fitting ahead of time, make it into a little party with one or two of her closest friends. The first time I saw my sister without hair after chemo - just hit me like a brick. It made it "all real". I could no longer deny what was happening. I'll never forget that moment. Journal the experience and look for the humour in the situations. For instance - the anaethetist who told Heather that a mastectomy was "a simple procedure" - yeah.... for who? or the radiation oncologist who told her that it was "no-brainer radiation". We hope someone put their brain into it! These situations provided the humour, although warped, that carried us through. Bring a blanket in case they run short. You can get very chilly with large amounts of IV fluid being flushed with the chemo. Everyone's experience is different. Heather claims she sailed through the experience and in fact she was on a ladder painting the deck a week after. I was amazed at her spunk. I was no help with a broken foot. It hits some people with full force. I don't know how many courses your sister will need but the affects are accumulative. It doesn't get easier as you go along - so it just isn't a matter of "being used to it". Heather found small amounts of food frequently rather than a huge meal cut down on diarrhea. One thing I hated hearing was people telling me "if anyone can make it Heather can". I didn't want to blame her if it didn't work. Strange - our father fought cancer for ten years but I remember the "irrational anger at him" I felt when he lost the battle. Fortunately, Heather is now nine years past the most aggressive type of breast cancer. Remember not to get discouraged by "statistics". The only one that really applies is how you do. She had a 16% chance of making five years. Knowing that in itself caused major stress. She found that teaching as many people as she could about IBC helped. She did nursing inservices and spoke at a lactation conference etc. There are support groups both Internet and in the community that may be helpful for your family. Do the research for your sister to find them. One of the ways I was able to offer help was in dealing with disability insurance hassles. She will be tired and sometimes insurance companies use this to minimize their costs. Some insurance employees are given "paid by performance incentives" to encourage them to pressure you back to work before you are physically and emotionally ready. Chemo fatigue and chemo brain are very real. Concentration may be a real factor depending on your sister's career. A person without energy just gives up instead of mounting an appeal. Become your sister's advocate. Sending along wishes for success.

As a mom, I understand your wife's feelings. I have two sons ~ 20 & 23. The 23 left at 18 because he didn't like my rules, he came back several times because he couldn't loaf in any one place very long... but when I allowed him to come back, he ALWAYS had conditions! Had to find a job... spend his day looking, not sleeping all day. He had to do chores... more chores if he wasn't working because he had more time. He had to pay $50 a week. and he had to follow our house rules.. no staying up all night watching movies or playing video games, clean up after yourself, and he could only fix himself meals when we were preparing our meals. (He was welcome to eat what we were having but if he didn't like it, he could fix himself something else... but he could only do so when I was making dinner~ not after all the dinner dishes were done & kitchen was clean, because even though he had to clean up after himself, he is not very good at it so we'd end up having to do it over.) Consequently, my son CHOSE to not stay with me very long.. usually a few weeks & he'd find someone's couch. That's why he came back several times. We stuck to our conditions and he kept coming back, hoping we'd let him slide. He eventually joined the military and has matured a lot in the last two years. But, I am also going through it with my 20 year old son... having to stay firm & consistent with the rules. If they don't like it, they are "adult" age and can go do something else. You should not feel like a prisoner in your own home & suspect your wife agrees but it's her son & she doesn't want to turn him away, but maybe is conflicted because she remembers how bad it was when he was there before... I feel for her. Oh yeah, if he is leaving Dad's because he doesn't like the rules or being told what to do, does he think it will be different in your home? I think this is one time you & your wife should get together with Dad & stepmom to have the same rules/expectations in both houses.

I'm at a loss for word here. I'll take your words of wisdom and count my blessings,, most definitely.
My wish for you is that you'll be doing the same later this year.

My FIL took chemo pills and some other high powered stuff. It made him feel terribly itchy. Crazy itchy, like laying on an ant hill. He had his tough days too. I admired his stamina though. I don't know what his tricks were to keep motivated but he was encouraging to anyone who knew his situation.... Moving on, I'm guessing about two years now, he is off of everything and doing well. I'm planning on you having an awsome birthday every year.

I Understand exactly where you are coming from. I had last week off because my white cell count was too low and this week I was so happy to get started again because this is my last month but...I have to tell you it's been a rough couple of days...I didn't sleep at all last night and I have finally started to come off of the steroid high. I'll be so happy to finish....

Just hang in there ...the nausea meds haven't bothered me at all.

I am so sorry that you and anyone else has to go through this. My MIL survived stage 4 breast cancer. She's a big believer in taking vitamins and herbs. She especially raves about tumeric.

Those side effects sure can take over, I know, and I hate it for you, 'Princess'. I used to watch my chemo buddies have similar reactions to their treatment (like you) and I felt so lucky I didn't have that many bad days after 6 months of chemo. Luckily, the month of radiation didn't bother me that much either.

I still hope you'll celebrate your birthday, cause even tho you may not be ready to party, this new year will be a good one for you..I just know it. :)

The chemo really tears you up, doesn't it. The radiation didn't bother me and I had it daily for 6 weeks. Like Granlan, I do feel lucky that I didn't have nausea or hair loss during my 2 rounds of chemo. I have surgery coming up soon and then will probably have chemo again. I'm not looking forward to it, but it's just something that I have to do to get well.

I hope it gets easier for you polarprincess.

Polarprincess...I really hope things improve for you and I thank you for your words of caution. You and others are an insight and inspiration for people to watch their health. While I have never had cancer and can not relate to what you are going through I do have a neuromuscular disease and know that things are not always easy.

Of course you think "Why did this happen to me" It's not right and never will be!!! Just know that there will come a day when you'll say "Thank God for the treatments, they saved my life" I urge you to take the anti nausea meds and also ask your Dr. for sleep medication. The loss of sleep can only make you feel lower. You're on a solitary trip and it's lonely for sure. Keep expressing your feelings, it helps to let off steam. Join an online help group. Believe it or not you can be uplifted by laughs and fun within a group that share your experiences. Hang in there, sending love and prayers your way.

I really feel so bad when hearing about anyone going through this terrible time..I've never had chemo, but one of my sons had 127 radiation treatments when he was just starting his freshman year at college...He was diagnosed with Hodgkins, took the 1st semester off to have surgeries. Went back to school, carrying a full load in engineering, (maintaining a 4.00)holding down a part time job, all while taking the treatments. He had a year from hell but he was determined...That was way back in 1978 and he's been cancer free since....Didn't mean to hijack the post, but I needed to brag about my hero.....

I am so sorry you are having such a hard time. I was really blesssed to have an easy time getting through my chemo and radiation. I hope March 9th comes quickly for you. Wish I could give you a warm, gentle hug!

Thanks everyone for all your well wishes and thoughts. I appreciate them so much. Today seems to be a little bit better, so hopefully I am coming out of it some. I hate that there are so many of us going through this... i don't understand why there has to be these stupid diseases. How do some people make it to 100 years old and never get cancer? I just wish i knew... i definitely will be doing everything in my power to be sure it never comes back, although there are no guarantees, and that is the hardest part. Blessings to all of you...

Just hide from the world as best you can when you feel bad after chemo. It will be there when you feel stronger.
Just know that you are kicking the cancer in the butt!!!

I hear ya Polarprincess.I had my 4th round 2 days before xmas,and have been sick,weak,shakey for the last 5 days.Thought i was going to have to go back in and get re-hydrated again,but i finally started feeling better yesterday,thank God!! I go for #5 on the 15th of this month,and the way it looks now i don't have to have radiation,and that's a good thing.

I did lose almost every hair on my body and head,and now with no hair,my hats keep slipping and riding up.Think i'll have to invest in some good double sided tape~~~~~~~~~~do ya think duct tape makes one??? LOL,LOL

Sure hope the rest of your treatments go well for you with little side affects,and that goes for all of you going thru this,self included.

My favorite saying is "This Too Shall Pass".
