What's your favorite thing about gardening?
Comments (19)I don't have Sum & Substance either.. It is on my list, for some reason I cannot find that sucker around here anywhere, very frustrating, that one and Big Daddy are the ones I have been trying to find. I love to water, that is when I just stand outside for a hour zoning, well here lately I have been also sticking my head under the water stream every 15 minutes or so, if my neighbors think I am weird that is all the better:) My thing here lately has been to take myself to Tangled Roots Nursery and pick out "ONE" hosta a week, they are 30% off right now, I have managed to pick up 'Stained Glass' 'Spilt Milk' and 'Olive Branch' for under 12 bucks a piece, I am going tommorrow, they have about 4 left I am wanting, I know logically (gaswise and others) I should just go and get the 4 I want, but I really like spending the hour or so picking out the perfect one. The workers have (finally) stopped hovering over me, they have me figured out and they just wave me over to where the hostas are, this one poor kid had sweat dripping down his face before he finally edged away mumbling something about helping the other customers and for me to just take my time, funny.... I didn't see any other customers there, lol!! Thats what they get for sitting in the air conditioning!!! I love just walking around looking and touching my plants, I think that is why I love hostas so much, I will get down and fuss with them, looking at the way the veins and colors are, touching the leaves on them. I am a big toucher when it comes to my plants and flowers. My mother swears that is why my houseplants look so good, that they enjoy being touched and fussed with, if I can't touch it (Cactus, Pineapple, screw pine, ugh! force of habit to touch, not wise!) I don't have it:) I hate weeding though, just not my cup of tea, I would rather chew glass. And the main reason is I am scared to death of snakes, I just know one is going to be hiding behind that blade of grass, sounds silly I know, but the thought of touching one or heaven forbid being bit by one just does me in. that is what I so totally love about my hostas under the pine tree, no weeds:)...See MoreHelp! Comments (37)I have a lot of things in my LR that I love. But I haven't quite mastered pulling them all together to make it flow. I've got an early 1900's Hooiser Cabinet that came from my great-grandmother's farm. I've got an old paint/wallpaper sign that my parents had at their flower shop and interior decorating store. My RED chaise chair. My native stone fireplace. Like I said, I've not perfected the "look" in my space yet. Hopefully one of these days....See MoreHave any of your not-so-favorite things grown on you?
Comments (17)We ordered windows in haste, to correct an earlier error that we caught after the windows had been ordered but this didn't allow enough thinking time. Pella accepted the change and obliged with a delivery just in time. This gave us one double casement counter-height that will have countertop as windowsill and three nearly square large casements that were supposed to echo existing windows in the rest of the house, about 6 inches shorter than countertop. (We SHOULD have ordered 4-5 matching casements all ganged together for the front window and just one to match the old shorter window on the north-facing kitchen wall.) The problem got worse because we never drew out things in an elevation drawing--the new windows were delivered as the walls were going up and we just paced out the layout right then and there on the roughed construction floor and marked things with a magic marker. No one would ever plan these windows like they ended up. The street side of the room will have no upper cupboards but the north and south ends will have cupboards and these will just about abut the two shorter windows, leaving a little strip of wall before the window casings begin. We should have made all the windows be a part of a single window unit and allowed no wallspace between the windows. Since photo was taken, DH has finished siding the addition but the window pattern made hardships for installation by a homeowner-amateur installer. On the interior, we will have full trim on each window, leaving just a little strip of paint or whatever between each of the front windows. If we tile around them, it will also be a pain. So window pattern is absolutely screwy, but it's beginning to grow on me when I look from the street. It doesn't look like ANYONE else's but it doesn't look bad. If we can handle the interior properly, the same will happen there as well. Once the other two old windows on the facade are replaced with casements also, everything might look just fine. Comments (37)What a great post, the stories are all so touching & humanitarian. Anything I was going to say about my favourite things in my yard would just sound so trivial & shallow in comparison. But I will share anyways. I do not have a fantastic landscape view, wildlife is limited, I have a subdivision lot to work with. Some of my neighbours think I spend an unhealthy amount of time gardening & that makes me odd? But I have spent the last 7 years with my husband, my son & 4 dogs in 2 different yards & I realize that I'm very grateful & fortunate to have that. We do spend a lot of time in our yard as a family. And slowly each year we add to it; for our enjoyment. Last year my husband spent a number of weekends building me a shed & veggie garden. It turned out great, but it was a lot of work for him after putting in 60 hour work weeks. So I really appreciate his weekend sacrifices to make me happy. And we all enjoy the veggie patch, it's great for little ones to learn about food. Even my husband is getting into gardening. He now wants to watch Monty Don & other gardening shows with me instead of watching a banal sitcom. It has really become something we are bonding over. We are planning on doing some garden tours together this summer. That would not have happened a couple years ago. It is just so nice to share that enthusiasm with someone else. The more he gets into gardening the easier it is to convince him to spend money on plants and the landscaping. So that's a win-win for me! He has also surprised me a few times by picking up potted roses or garden items that he knows I would like. To others that would seem so unromantic, but a handy garden tool or flower is right up my alley. And it proves he is listening to me! As for actual favourite things in the yard there are a few. We have a glacier boulder in our front yard. That was the reason I got him to go to the open house in the first place. We lived in the area & my husband said he wished we had a big rock on our lawn when we would go for walks and see other landscaped yards. So when this house went on the market, I told him about it and said it has the biggest rock in the whole neighbourhood. We bought it at the open house & it all started because of a big rock. And it's fun for the kids to play on too! I also have a couple plants that were from family. They are not anything fancy, but one is a plantain lily that my grandfather grew, than my mom has a chunk of it & now I have a chunk of the one my mom has. So it's special to me....See MoreJodi_SoCal
