Replacing a canopy on a pendant light?

We have 2 incandescent mini-pendant lights we would like to reuse after we remodel. However, the canopy (I'm not sure that's the right term- the circular thing that is mounted on the ceiling with the cord coming through the middle) is too large in diameter for where these will be placed. I'm having difficulty finding replacement canopies. Any suggestions? Specifically, I'm looking for a copper-finish canopy that is 4 inches in diameter or smaller. Thanks!

Why do you need one so small? I think you may have a real problem finding such a thing, because the electrical box in the ceiling, where connections are made between the light fixture's wiring and the house's wiring, is likely to be bigger than 4" across, and the canopy has to be big enough to cover it with room to spare. I don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of available components, but my intuition tells me you're looking for a part not likely to exist.

The lights are going to hang from a 4.5 inch wide beam running across a skylight. The electrician doesn't seem to think there will be any problem putting a box there, but I suspect you are right that I may be on a wild goose chase looking for a canopy. Off to find some canopy-less pendants, I guess!

Worth X-posting to lighting forum. Initial reaction--you're asking a lot of track pendants. We used to have a fluorescent box like yours. Hideously ugly, but it put out a ton of ambient light. Pendants are best suited for task downlighting--i.e. over an island. They do not typically put out much uplight, and often use relatively small bulb wattages. Unless you use a ton of big pendants, you'll end up with very spotty and uneven diffuse ambient lighting. Other thoughts would be to couple pendants with some source of ambient lighting: either wall sconces, if practical, or some type of larger ceiling mounted fixture. There are, it is true, big pendants that provide uplighting, like the ones we used: but even with these, we added a ton of recessed cans to ensure adequate light.

i-chic, however did you find that bat fixture!?! DH looked at it for a moment and then said, "Hey, why not?" until he saw the price. The size fixtures we're looking at right now are more like those shown above by birkie_2006, and we'd hang them lower exactly like that (thanks, birkie!). I checked out kitchenkelly's fixtures, and I love how those three tiny pendants look above her sink in that pretty, airy kitchen, but I think they might get lost in our situation, which probably will turn out to be very woody and bricky--altogether a "heavier" looking kitchen with darker colors. Frankly, I'd like to wait until the cabinets go up before making the final decision. It just seems like all the decisions are interrelated. If I don't pick the fixtures now (standard incandescent? electronic low voltage?), then I also can't pick the appropriate dimmer switches that are going to control them (dimmer switches mandated by California Title 24). Well, I guess the builder can install any old switch temporarily and use our old fixtures for light until we figure out which way is up. Why is our last decision--lighting--the hardest?

The type of lighting that is typically on its own switch includes pendant lights and over sink lights. This allows for more control over the lighting in specific areas of the kitchen. In terms of combining lights, you can consider combining the under cabinet lighting with the pot lights to provide overall ambient lighting in the kitchen. The pendant lights over the seated counter can be combined with the over sink light to create a focused task lighting area for food preparation or other activities at the counter. For the room size of 10'x16', having 6 pot lights should provide adequate lighting coverage. For outlet locations, it is recommended to have outlets installed along the countertops for convenient use of small appliances. The pendants will look good. The ones you had were definitely too small, but what you’ve chosen will look good. It make take a little getting adjusted to them once installed. You’re lighting over dining table is a nice style but it’s on the smaller scale for dining lighting. You may find that you want to enlarge that fixture too after the new island pendants. ....just a thought.

How about a section of track with pendants hanging from it? That's about the only way you'll avoid a canopy.

I am having a similar problem except I am looking for replacement canopies that are 6 inches wide.Any suggestions are appreciated.We have just remodeled our kitchen and the electical boxes in the ceiling are 5.5inches in diameter all the lights I have seen are 5 inches.Please help!

I also ned a smaller (3.5"-4") canapy for a pendant chandelier. Some wiring in log homes run along a groove on top of a 4x10" beam then drops through a drilled hole to the bottom of the beam where a fixture attaches to wires. I took down the fan and want to hang the chandelier, but a canapy wider than the beam doesnt look right now.
