Chicken that lays green eggs....

MSN has a video on about a chicken that lays green eggs...

They sent a crew down to Mexico to video this chicken...saying it looks like any normal chicken but lays green eggs...

Now I know ...it is the breed that causes the chicken to lay green eggs...and there is also one that lays pink eggs.

As God as my witness and my grandkids , my son and my husband...I had one of them for breakfast just last week.

My cousin who lives in a small town near here has chickens and one or more of them is of that breed. She gets green eggs all the time.

I have a friend who used to have them and he used to give me the green and pink eggs because I got so excited over them.

I email MSN and told them the eggs are not happening because the chicken is something special.

Too bad they didn't do a little investigation before sending a crew all the way to Mexico to video it....lol

Ya think they will email be back???

Most do slow down, but the upside on my older hens are eggs so large, even the cartons designed for jumbo eggs won't close. I think Brendasue has it, in that your hybrid breeds seem to keep cranking.....those who are fantastic layers in their youth. My older hens are golden comets a hybrid off Rhode Island Reds......who really are an old breed but so prolific that they are seldom called heritage. I know I have a few up there so old that I've been teased of running an avian geriatric facility. I brought new blood in this year and the ones who are past three are going to be going bye-bye. I don't like butchering but I think that is their fate for broths.

We are in West Texas. We've actually had two snow storms already. Not bad ones but bad enough. The chickens were all grazing in our alfalfa field so that has the fresh greens covered pretty well. I can't believe it is still green after 6 inches of snow but it is. It's not growing any more though and I had to clear out all our irrigation pipes for the winter so it's not being watered either. The roosters are still grazing it. I can't wait till spring! I hate these winters we get. My whole time in the military, 40 years as a dependant and active duty myself, I only spent maybe 2 years total in a place that actually gets cold in the winter. I used to plan to retire in the PI or maybe southern california but recent events and the business I now own prevent that so I am just dealing with it. Texas is a nice place to farm at least. I put a digital timer in the coop last night and set it to come on a few minutes after sunrise and off about 8 PM. It's nice and warm in there but maybe this will help out a little without wearing them out early. This will help my son feeding them too. I usually tell him to go give the birds dinner about 5pm but he is so slow he doesn't find his way out there till 7 or so. He doesn't eat till all the animals are fed and that didn't even make him speed up. Teenagers. I just went out and checked all the birds myself again. I do that at least once a day. I checked real hard for mites this time, picking up every hen. All clean. One of our old hens got tore up pretty bad by the roosters this year too and she has almost all her feathers back now. Everybody seems happy and healthy. I know they must be enjoying the break from the roosters.

three chickens three shell less eggs in one day help

Perhaps stress can accelerate egg passage so that a shell doesn't get deposited before the egg is expelled. I'm not a vet, but the timing, & all THREE laying shell-less eggs, right after a couple of stressful events... I'd keep an eye one them, but would be inclined to write it off to stress--this time. (for what it's worth, my pet duck had some sort of metablic disease, possibly even cancer. Her bones were terribly decalcified--had her x-rayed--& the vet was able to humanely euthanize her with an injection. don't want to worry you, just explain the radical & probably completely different problem she had. She was laying soft-shells regularly, which is why I took her in to a vet who treated birds) It's true that various grain fungi--like aspergillosus (sp?) can be deadly to birds--if consumed. That's why the seed in feeders needs to stay DRY & the feeders frequently cleaned. But the effects are pretty severe--staggers, respiration difficulty--& your hens sound fine. As you observed, home laid eggs from hens well-cared for that have access to greens--the shells are like rock! & the yolks are so much deeper colored & tasty.

way back when i farmed for a living we saw an ad in the catalog that we ordered our baby chicks. we ordered a dozen straight run araucana chicks. and paid 50Cents each plus shipping. which we thought was expensive. But once they started laying pastel colored eggs in green and blue and pink and tan. we were real happy with them and we sold the extra fresh farm eggs. everybody wanted the easter eggs! I set up a incubater in the celler and hatched out lots of eggs and also traded eggs with a friend who also had the chickens too. to have a bigger gene pool of chicks. a few years later i was taking 12 dozen eggs to work each week and always had requests for more, i got a promotion at work and gave up farming to move to another town to work. in the ads in the sunday paper this week i saw an add selling baby auracana chicks for $3.00 each.

I saw just a bit about that this morning...I wondered if they had ever looked up the fact that there ARE breeds that lay green eggs!

Caryn has chickens....they lay brown eggs, and even tho I know there is no difference...it is hard to eat them! lol

I saw that on the news last night Patti and thought the same thing!LOL We use to have some of those chickens too.I guess they needed a good excuse for the reporter to go to Mexico!LOL I can't believe they have never heard of Araucana chickens.
Ladonna, those are Bantam chickens. We called them Banties. My grandmother had those when we were kids and I remember they layed brown and tan eggs but don't remember other colors. They are small chickens I remember the little rooster was a mean little thing.LOL

You are right, they are not rare.

Had friends years ago who had these chickens that laid colored eggs. Can't remember what the name was.

Martha Stewart has some of those chickens. I saw them on her show, along with the eggs.

When I was a kid my babysitter had banty hens that laid colored eggs, like ladonna and Carol mentioned.

Let us know if you hear back from MSN.

Why are we surprised that chickens lay eggs of different colors? Just look at all the variety in bird eggs. And chickens are birds, aren't they? LOL

I get eggs from a friend from her chickens. There are always tan, white, brown and green eggs in the cartons..actually I get very few white eggs, because someone else that buys them from her..thinks (like Sandy) that they are different..so he only wants the white eggs.
They aren't....lol

So... Is it cheaper to dye the eggs each year or to buy the chickens for Easter???

You knew this question was coming, didn't you?!

Patti, we have green eggs in Amarillo because my friend sold me fresh eggs and asked if I have a problem with green eggs. Some of her customers did not want the green ones.
I find that funny as the green eggs cooked and tasted like the brown and white ones. :)

Brenda, the egg lady, knows the breed names of her chickens, but I don't recall the names she told me.

Aracaunas. I don't know if that's spelled right. Very common chickens around here. I used to have some. I can't believe they thought it was so rare that they went down to Mexico to film it. That's hilarious!! Doesn't take much to amaze some folks, does it? LOL!!!!!!!

Is this where green eggs and ham came from?

I've thought about getting a few chickens in a pen in my backyard so my 'city' kids could learn a few things. It'd be interesting to get some that layed something other than white.

We used to have Aracaunas and other chickens. Some people that bought eggs thought the green ones weren't fresh, that they were moldy or something.
