Dining Area Lighting Help Needed

We have to decide on 4" can lighting for our dining area (which ajoins the kitchen) in the next couple days.

The kitchen (only half of which is showing in the drawing) has six 4" cans in a recessed ceiling, one 6" spot over the sink and three mini-pendants over the counter bar.

I am showing a rough drawing of the dining area which is 8'10" x 12'2" if you count the walkway from the kitchen to the hall.

Right now we are thinking of placing four 4" cans in the dining area with one large pendant over the dining table. Up to this point we have only had a four bulb ceiling fan there and were satisfied with the light levels.

The yellow spots on the drawing represent where we think we want the four 4" cans to go. Each is 2 feet from the walls or soffit.

Should we add more lights even though we probably won't need them?

Had to make a decision today on the position of the 4" cans so I'm moving this post down.

I personally like groupings of odd #'s. I think it also depends how many watts your recessed cans are and are they dimmable? It looks like you have lots of sunlight coming in from the windows & PD for day light. I would move the pendants a little closer to the sink just because of head room and sink lighting.
I would go with more lights, just because you can always turn some off if it's too much but can't change it if it's not enough!
Is your buffet lighted? Would you want a can above it to show off you stuff? How about the apposite wall, are you going to have something there like a painting/wall art to show off? If so, you could go with 3 & 3. I like that you have cans in the walk way and hall entrance.

Hi Laura - How about TV on a low console very close to the counter/bar. You could put TV on a swivel base. Or you could do a long low console to run the full length of window wall. Put TV on right side of window (facing us) and use left side for bar items or dining stuff. If you put TV next to counter you would be able to see from dining area also, but on other side you could see from kitchen. I think the white linen panels and roller shade would look great. The War is Over picture above is another nice option - I personally would prefer having the TV on the window wall so you can actually see the TV from the couch without getting a crick in your neck. I also think it could look very cool.

Well being as this is for a kitchen you really need lighting, and assuming based on the ceiling the power supplies that are there are what you have. So, I would say I need to see the floor plan for cabinets etc, but my first thought is to turn them to run with the wall and move to rail lighting by Tech who can offer some low profile fixture heads. Right now you need to worry about the function of the lighting more than the esthetic. IM only seeing one wall to the kitchen, if you could step back and get more of a room shot from sink side and opposite side.

How about a pattern you like with colors that match your existing solids. Then you can mix and match. Looks like you've pretty much got beige and brown there now. Do you want something subtle or bold? Dark red or blue would be an option. A bolder accent color would draw the eyes to the space and make it look more inviting. As would maybe some bolder accents on the tables or walls. Like a big metal candle lantern or flower pot or metal sculpture on the wall. We got some garage sale nautical art to hand on our porch wall, under the roof of course but not fine art that will get ruined by a little weather. We even have a sign that says, "Welcome to the porch" and then lists all the fun things you can do there. Kitschy but makes the space look inviting.
