I am just sick over this. These poor, poor people. I heard that Haiti was the 4th poorest country in the world. These people are literally wiped out of what little they had.

I am thinking of donating through the Red Cross, unless anyone has a better idea. I know times are tough for people in this country, but as bad off as some of us are, we are luckier than the Haitians on their best day, never mind this devastation.

Red Cross is only asking for $10. The link is below. You can call or click on the Donate Now button in the upper right hand corner.

I hope no one complains about this thread. I'm not spamming or promoting. I'm just trying to help.

Seeing the pictures....I cannot imagine the loss.

My first cruise: 25 years ago, this summer, was to the Dominican Republic and Port'a Prince (sp)

What an eye opener especially to Port'a Prince.

Never experienced such poverty!

I am in awe of their devastation, now!

Houses that practiced voo doo with the flags showing they practiced such.

My bus was protected by machine gun wearing guards, and we were not allowed to leave the group, due to the criminal activity.

Remember the smell of chocolate from the chocolate factories in the Dominican.

My heart goes out to them.

Thank you all so much! I cant weight to tell everyone at Urban Paradise. I was worried that no one would give but it looks like we are actually going to pull this off. My friends and professors have already donated. This Monday I went to Home Depot and although they wish they could they werent able to let put a donating poster next to the seed stand at the garden section. But some nice lady saw what I was doing and bought seven heirloom seeds on the spot! And yesterday a cop saw me putting posters and took one so that he can place it at the department of corrections. Also some fruit venders that go around on trucks selling produce have been giving me pineapple tops so that we can plant them. We have gotten off to a great start and its not even the 23rd yet.

Thanks for that link, Anney, very interesting. Some of those could be useful for growing in summer in the subtropical US. Echo is a remarkable site, isn't it? I hope to finally get over and check them out this winter. From that info I extrapolate that many of our common vegetable types and/or temperate-adapted cultivars thereof would not be a good fit for Haiti and other low-to-mid-elevation tropical regions. Merely the mailing address to ECHO and some stamps might be a lot more useful for a Haitian, as I believe they give seeds free to people in such situations.

Day 10 Wed, November 10, 2010 Solo Tim Said goodbye to Bonnie early yesterday morning, which left me with no companions to accompany me through Port-au-Prince. After a quick breakfast, I headed down the mountain to make my way back to the US Embassy. I went into the Daily Cafe for water and Coke, then followed my directions to the Tabarre School, which was quite nearby. There I met Gladys, who was very welcoming and gracious. She introduced me to the Bishop and I demonstrated the laptop and Etoys. I've become so accustomed to my demonstrations that I fear I'm being too automatic, though from people's responses, this doesn't seem to be the case. Gladys spoke briefly about Wilson Jeudy's presidential campaign, of which she is the campaign manager. We then toured the school and showed the laptop to the 4th/5th grade class. This school seems quite well behaved in an engaged and friendly way. As usual, the children simply loved the laptop and could not wait to play with it themselves. After lunch at the Daily Cafe, I made my way along Rue Tabarre towards my next stop. Traffic was at a standstill, so I tried a "yellow (aka paved) route" on Google maps, to find that it was anything but. It did take me through the middle of some very large tent camps. After nearly two weeks here, I'm sad to say that very little surprises me anymore. The harshness I drive through every day seems to blur. As I write this, I realize I didn't even try to take a photo of these camps, as I have so many more. Truly the one thing missing from the photos is the scope ... just how many people are living in these temporary havens. Eventually I reached Sineas, the camp city I was visiting. Sara and Darma (both from an organization called AMURT) introduced me to the school's teachers and administrators. Their approached seemed quite well thought out, with an emphasis on organic sustainability such as composting toilets and hydroponic gardens. The children and school were impressive to see. I then drove with Sara to their other school (Amsai), this time in a physical structure that was damaged by the earthquake. The teachers and students at this school were likewise impressive. I watched dance, art, and karate classes. There was an air about the place I can only describe as "freedom" .. a great place for a pilot. Four of the teachers joined me on my drive back up to Petionville. I four-wheeled up the mountain and talked with Merline and her children (John was away on business) and easily, easily, fell asleep.

CNN was asking for $5 donations. Imagine if a million or so people donated just $5. I am going to make a donation through UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). Red Cross keeps a big percentage of donations for administrative costs.

Brad and Angelina donated $1 million to Doctors Without Borders.

Amazon is collecting donations.

Western Union is waving transfer fees to anyone from the US or Canada sending money to Haiti.

American Airlines is giving bonus miles to customers who donate $50.

Abbott Laboratories is contributing $1 million for medicines.

Walmart website has a link to the Red Cross on their website and is donating 6 hundred thousand.

Disney is giving $100k to Red Cross.

Bank of America is giving half a million to Red Cross and another half million for restoration efforts.

The only thing making me feel better about this horrible, horrible disaster is seeing Americans jumping in to help.

No matter what people say about us or how they trash Americans, we always come through. I'm very proud of this country.

I donated to the Red Cross as well, they will have a presence in Haiti for a very long time and all the money (100%) earmarked for Haiti will go to the relief efforts. There are many wonderful organizations that will send help. As sad as such events are it does my heart good to see people helping people.

Doctors Without Borders is one of my regular monthly charities, so I donated there. They already had a strong presence in Haiti, so they had something to work from. (I'm sure that's true of other aid agencies, too, I just know more about MSF.)

One of my friends at work has family in Haiti, his grandparents and cousins. Everyone at work is praying for them. Please KTers join in too? I've seen Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton promising aid. A donation to the Red Cross would help,too, no matter how small.

Today is my payday and I am going to donate to the Red Cross too. Watching the news about this is almost too painful to stand. I wish I was in a position to actually go and help with the Red Cross or another organization.

I am heartbroken for these people and what they are going through. In the very best of days, staying alive was a struggle for them. What a fearful thing this must be. While watching a live broadcast last night, there was a lot of gunfire in the area where many of these people were gathering. How terrifying! Doctors Without Borders is group I donated to. I know, for a fact, that many of these groups have high percentages of donations that go to administrative costs.

One of the Fox news reporters on the scene who has been all over the world covering disasters broke up while reporting I shed a tear right along with him.

Just sent a donation to Doctors Without Borders. They are a well respected group and do well with donations. Came here and was glad to see so many others supported this great organization.

I donated to Doctors w/o Borders as well. Watched CNN as much as I could stand tonight. The suffering is overwhelming. So many need medical help that they will never get even if doctors are there. Specialized surgeries and that sort of thing just aren't going to happen. I worry that the situation will become chaotic if the aid efforts are not well organized.
