vegetable seed for Haiti

We are going Haiti on a mission trip and will be doing gardening seminars while we are there. I am taking tools and would love to have seeds to take and give away, too. Do you have any seeds you could donate for our project?

In addition to posting your request here, I suggest you post your request on the Seed Exchange forum, too. Many people are very generous and will be glad to donate their extra seeds.

Hi! I have alot of dill seeds (25 or 50), also have Broccoli rabe, 10 garlic chive seeds, 24 sweet red cherry pepper seeds, celantro slow bolt 24 seeds. Also have roma, homestead, and red cherry tomatos. Thank you all so much! I cant weight to tell everyone at Urban Paradise. I was worried that no one would give but it looks like we are actually going to pull this off. My friends and professors have already donated. This Monday I went to Home Depot and although they wish they could they werent able to let put a donating poster next to the seed stand at the garden section. But some nice lady saw what I was doing and bought seven heirloom seeds on the spot! And yesterday a cop saw me putting posters and took one so that he can place it at the department of corrections. Also some fruit venders that go around on trucks selling produce have been giving me pineapple tops so that we can plant them. We have gotten off to a great start and its not even the 23rd yet.

Haitihelper - Do you have any more information about what would do well there? Can you tell us what they were already growing on your last visit? I can send seeds for Malabar Spinach Vine which I think might do well there. It's more heat tolerant than regular spinach. Were they already growing tomatoes? I read somewhere that cherry tomatoes do better there than larger varieties so maybe they will need some that are somewhat heat/drought tolerant. I can send some cherry tomato seeds if you need those. Just let me know. Please post a follow-up so we'll know if you're still looking for seeds. Will most temperate-climate food crops thrive below 5 or 6 thousand feet elevation in the tropics?

I thought about the same thing -- what plants would grow in the tropics. Okra probably would. Southern peas.

Thanks for that link, Anney, very interesting. Some of those could be useful for growing in summer in the subtropical US. Echo is a remarkable site, isn't it? I hope to finally get over and check them out this winter.

From that info I extrapolate that many of our common vegetable types and/or temperate-adapted cultivars thereof would not be a good fit for Haiti and other low-to-mid-elevation tropical regions. Merely the mailing address to ECHO and some stamps might be a lot more useful for a Haitian, as I believe they give seeds free to people in such situations.

Just noticed this site and wondered how your Haitian project went. We are helping a village in Haiti and could use some advice on how to get them started in growing a garden to help supplement there food needs.
