Fans don't really go with the style of my house...when we built last year the only room i put a fan in was my 12 year old son's. He is hot natured, plus i always feel boys rooms tend to smell a little, athletic. The fan helps with that! :)

we don't have a/c in our house (MA) and I have them in every room other than the dining room, and I wish I had one there. One is going in the kitchen soon. I love them.

We have one in the master bedroom, and one between the kitchen and LR. We have another one that we might put up in the guest bedroom.

We also have one in every bedroom. Also in our great room and in the eat in section of our kitchen. I don't care if they aren't the most stylish item, circulated air is awesome. I don't know about the dining room though, but I am a sucker for a pretty chandelier and wouldn't want to waste that opportunity for a little sparkle and shine.

In my small house, with 9 ft ceilings on the first floor and 8 ft on the second, I have one fan in the LR and one in the kitchen part of the kitchen/DR. (In the DR proper, I chose an over-table fixture over a fan.) Upstairs, there is one in each of the three bedrooms.

They are all 42", white, and without light fixtures, so as to be minimally obtrusive. The ones upstairs are flush; the ones downstairs have one-foot rods. We still need AC in the muggiest months, but basically they are saving us a ton of money on electricity.

Congratulations on your upcoming new home! Ceiling fans are a must in North Carolina (at least at our house) and we have them in every room *except* the dining room. I learned in another house that it cools the plated food too quickly.

We have one in our dining room but usually turn it off during meals. Our dining room is in the middle of our house so it helps circulate air throughout. New kitchen will get one too for hot summer days. Master bedroom also. No a/c use fans summer and winter.

We have one in every room except the kitchen. I have a regular fan I sit on top of the refrigerator in warm weather. I even have a ceiling fan in my master bath, it's a big help in the summer.

I keep my AC at 78 or 79 in the summer and with the fans it feels fine.

We have 12 ft ceilings downstairs and have white ceiling fans in the 2 bedrooms on extension rods. They have light fixtures but they go with the style of our Victorian bungalow so that is OK..and the lights are on dimmers.

Upstairs in the attic reno area there is one ceiling fan , this great room has an 18 ft peak with a skylight that opens. The fan helps with the heat removal in the summer when the skylight is open. The 2 bedrooms have kneewalls and peaked celings but there isn't any way to have fans so we have antique oscillating fans on tables.

There is now a ceiling fan on the front porch since I redid that area...it is amazing how comfortable it makes it out there . c

Every bedroom and the kitchen. Love them and they help us minimize use of our HVAC system.

I have ceiling fans in the bedrooms, living room and family room (2). My old kitchen had one, installed by the P.O. When I had central air installed a few years ago, I thought I would get rid of a few of the fans, but use them just as much as I did before. Mine are all flush mount. They get turned on from late spring through fall.

We have ceiling fans in 2 of our 3 bedrooms (#3 needs one) and in the dining room which shares space with the kitchen. No fan in the LR. We just got AC about 2 years ago, but we only use it in the very hottest part of the summer (Aug-Sept here) as we are coastal in a mild area. The fans are essential for all those warm days not worthy of turning on the AC but in need of moving air.

I have ceiling fans in every bedroom (3), the family/living room, and the dining room.

I would love to have an elegant light in the dining room but our dining room is in the center of the house and in the same room as the wood stove. We were hoping to find a different place for the wood stove, but due to the location of the existing chimney, that was our only option. We need one there for air circulation during the winter months for sure.

It would take some work to change the light in the dining room being that we live in an old farm house (over 100 yrs old) and the light box is in the center of the room and our table isn't. It would take a little electrical work and some drywall repair, but nothing more than we've tackled before.. but I love my warm home in the winter too much!

We did open the wall from our dining room to the kitchen so we can see the more modern lighting in the kitchen from the dining room.

All of the rooms that we have ceiling fans in now did when we bought the house 12 yrs ago, we've just replaced them all over the years with nicer more modern models. I guess in Central Indiana we like air movement and being a raised farm girl, I love to have the windows open as much as I can too.

Like most everyone else, we have them in bedrooms, and one in the great room. We use them quite often, and I use the one in our bedroom every night.

All 3 bedrooms, Library/Computer/Office, and Great room. Ceilings are 10 feet with Great room and kitchen meeting as a Cathedral ceiling, 14 feet at tip. We use the fans year round in New Jersey. They help save on A/C in summer and on reverse in the winter they push the warm air down. There are so many awesome choices of fan styles that you can get one to match almost any decor. All of ours have some form of lighting (not used very often) I think the fans that have the lighting are the ones that have many more "decor" styles available. Fans are a must IMO.

I have them in every room except the den and laundry room. I have two in the kitchen.

I also have no central AC and they really do help.

I have none and have always disliked them intensely, but appear to be in an extreme minority here. I find them tacky and obtrusive, but we're tall and here on the Maine shore you don't need fans, much less central A/C. Maybe a whole-house fan to bring cooler air up at night during the one week we have really hot summer weather. My parents do have one of those in the humid Midwest and it's wonderful.

Oh, I forgot...we do have one on our covered rear porch, also!

We just replaced the typical 24 year old ceiling fan in our great room with the one posted below. We love the newer style and it moves a lot more air than the old one.

I'm with CP on this one, although I don't live in a clime where they are necessary.

I'm in Baltimore, used to be in DC. Have one in every bedroom and in the living room (not a formal room, but the everyday social room). I had one in the kitchen in DC, not here...but only because it wouldn't work well. Instead, I use an old-fashioned looking rotating fan on a floor stand.

Absolutely a must to hold down elect. bills and increase comfort anyplace where central AC is needed.

I'm kind of glad to see this thread, as I don't notice much talk of ceiling fans here. We have them in every room except the bathrooms (in my last house we had a tiny white one in the bath.) No central air in our home yet (still using two ancient evaporative coolers) and they are lifesavers when the temps go over 100 degrees.

I don't love the look of many, and don't love the job of cleaning dust off the fan blades, but we surely do need them. In rooms with poor ventilation they can make a tremendous difference in comfort.

It is interesting about the love/hate of the look. Every time I have my lovely white ones on in my high ceiling rooms I am almost immediately transported back to "Casablanca" :) I don't have them going fast and furious...just a nice lazy round and round. I find it not only cooling but also very hypnotic and restful. Lace curtain at the window flutters just a little and the shadows move...ice tinkles in a tall glass of tea...page turning in a good long interesting book...mmmmh.

Nice that we each have different tastes. I have an extension pole and the brush attachment to dust the blades. Easy to do. c

Besides the typical common spaces and bedrooms, we do have one in the kitchen over the table. It was there when we bought the house and I thought "How weird! That has got to go." That was over 20 years ago, and after totally gutting the kitchen 5-6 years ago, that is about the only thing we kept in the kitchen. It is much more useful than I ever expected it to be, and we would have to replace it if it ever died.

We love our fans, too. In the new house, we have one in each of the four bedrooms, one in the great room, and two on the covered back porch.

We have fans in all of our rooms except the dining room and bathrooms. We live in the Chicago area. In the dining room I have a chandy, but our dining room is attached to our living room which has a fan. I really wish I would have put a fan in our master bath. We use our fans all year. I can't imgaine NOT having fans in all our rooms.

I love fans and think they can look nice too. They evoke a summer day and make the house much more comfortable. It is something I'd never do without. Refrigerated air is good for the really bad days, but most of the time we use the fans and it is lovely. Our electric bills are much more reasonable than the neighbors' because they all run central air a lot and we have only a few wall units that get used a handful of times a year at best, but are appreciated on those rare days....

Ceiling fans in every room of the house except the bathrooms, and that's only because those rooms are too small. But we are in the hot south and they are worth their weight in ice in the summer months.

I'm currently trying to decide if I can stand not to put one in the new dining room, especially since it will have windows facing west. I sure would like the look of a chandelier, but I also want to be comfortable.

I don't like them in cooking or eating areas, but we have them in the living room, family room and all the bed rooms. We are about to take the one in the master bedroom to put in a chandelier I fell in love with. Hope I love it as much when it is installed, because I now have to find another type of fan since DH says he can't sleep without one.

I have them in the bedrooms and just love them. They really save on the AC by circulating the air. I also can open the windows on warm (not hot) nights and use the fans instead of the AC. I may add one to my screened porch just for the look. I bet they would blow away the mosquitoes if that was a problem.
