Closing vents to save $$- is this wise/does it work?

My home is almost 11 years old, 2-story, 2100 square feet. Only myself and hubby live in it, so I've always closed the floor registers in the 2 extra bedrooms (and I keep the doors closed), as well as the living and dining room registers to save money in the winter on heat. The upstairs is always warmer as it is, enough so that we only crack open the register in our bedroom or we get overheated. My question is- does this actually help in cost and function? I've heard people say the ducts were not designed to close some of them off, and I haven't actually experimented to see if my heating will will be less. Thank you!
