They usually aren't good reductions until a few weeks later...but by then there is nothing good left. I won't bother going. I don't need anything anyway!

I would have been expecting better sales than that, Alisande! Maybe we should get in the liquidation business.

Don't know if I've just become really cheap or if it seems the sale prices almost -anyplace- aren't what they used to be. Even our local Goodwill store is outrageous. If I go to the thrift store looking for a used flannel shirt to wear to work, I don't want to pay more than $3 or $4. Left with nothing.

I won't bother with Circuit City. They've always been pricey in my book.

I found the same thing with our local Linens & Things, when they had their bankruptcy sale. Anything good was 10% off, but seriously, for the same brand pillowcases, (which I wanted for mailing my Quilts of Valor) I could get them the same price or lower at other stores.

Here is what REALLY happens....

The company turns the closing sale over to a separate company called a "liquidator". Prices are definitely raised. Heard today about someone who got a price on a computer for $530 on Friday, went back Saturday to buy it, and the price was now $100 more. The old manager at the store saud it's all out of his hands, the liquidator staff was completely in charge. AT Linens'N Things, you would see a table of appliances with a sign that said "30% Off!" from the $59.95 price tag. But you could peel back the price tag and see the old store tag for $29.95.

I saw some cute socks at Kohl's for $5 for a 2 pr package, 50% off, for $2.50. At Mervyn's, the same exact socks were labeled at $6 and 30% off. Hmmm.... That's $4.20.

Closing sales are complete rip offs, but people think they are getting a good deal.

Pass the word, and save your friends some money.

there was a time when a liquidation sale was exactly that. now it seems as if the stores jack up the prices, create new tags and then begin the so-called markdown so that they can make a few bucks above and beyond what's owed to their creditors.

i always felt bad when a store was closing, but used to get some great deals - that's not the case anymore. i also think too many of these stores get the greed - they can't be content with a store here and there, they must open 100's of them they are mismanaged and then closed.

Same thing is happening at our Goody's store that is closing! One of my co-workers bought a purse that I just feel in love with..but even with the so-called % off, it was a little more than I wanted to pay! They still had several and I asked the cashier if it would be marked down anymore and she said probaby. She said also told me that same purse was $16.00 before Christmas, but that now everything is in the hands of the "Liquidators"!

There's another thing I was told years ago when a chain store in our area was closing. The owners were only closing some of them at that point. They shipped out most of their inventory on the good selling items to the stores not closing and brought in the 'junk' items from the those stores to 'clearance' at our store. Caveat emptor is always the rule of the day.

The same thing happened when Linen n things closed down. A second party bought them out to liquidate. Customers found new price stickers over top of the old ones, and most of the new stickers were higher priced! Because in Alberta, that's illegal, they were able to get away with it because they didn't put the original price sticker on the product. It was all over the news. They're sale prices were really high and most people who shopped there, left empty handed. I would be leary of buying any electronics at a liquidation sale due to close out. The stores warranty goes zip!

I saved between 70-90% at Linen's n' Things. This is the way to shop a liquidation sale. Befriend one of the salespeople and find out what day the markdowns are being taken. I found out it was every Tuesday. Find what you want and make sure you ask if this item is being shipped to another store. My comforter set was supposed to be shipped out but my saleslady held off after I spoke to her about holding it. I checked every week and when the items I wanted went to 70% off I bought them. The following week I bought a few extra items at 90% off. It took some work but I saved a ton of money.
I plan on going to Circuit City in a few weeks.

It's something about human nature. Wave the term "sale" under people's noses and they are so enthralled they lose all sanity.

A guy who used to work for me got a call from his wife the one day. He hung up the phone and got the funniest look on his face. He came over to me and said it just hit him what his wife said. They had been to a local store and saw a torchier lamp they liked (when they were in style) and wanted to get. It was "on sale" for $69.00. OK. Jim had stopped at Kmart for something and saw the identical lamp (same mfgr and model number) for $29.99. He told his wife and her response? No way. Why? "But that one's not on sale! He shook his head. And we have had a lot of laughs about it. Sad thing is she was dead serious.

That's true cynic.
I went to Macy's and bought a dress only because it was 80% off. It was $1150.00 and I paid $230.00. I'm a sucker for a good sale.

Interesting, Donna. It has the ring of truth.

I've talked to many CC employees over the years, all young guys. A few gave me erroneous information, probably because they thought it was accurate. But most were helpful and honest. One of them told me that the sales team make most of their money on commissions from extended warranties. (No wonder they were always pushing them.)

I remember one kid who told me not to buy the MP3 player car adapter at CC because I could get it for half the price at Walmart. (He was right.)

PS: The sales crew at our local Best Buy wins my award for Most Ridiculously Misleading Information Given on a Consistent Basis.

Well still no deals at circuit city's liquidation. In fact the prices have gone up!

At first their 10% off MSRP was stupid as it was more than their normal discount. The 25% off MSRP put the TV's in line with Best Buy Prices, but still more than costcos.

So I went last weekend for their 30% off. The price for the tv I'm looking for 50", 1080p plasma or lcd, was more than what it was when it was 25% off. WTH??

They had a million or so left. I figure maybe end of March before the liquidators get the clue, that if it's lower than competition, they might unload all that inventory.

I cracked up at the LNT sale. Things were 10% off when normally I had a slew of 20% coupons for there and BB&B which could be used. And they did raise their prices. Same w/ CC. We went for a printer and got one at Staples comparable for $20 less.
