I have used the Zyliss julienne peeler for a few years and it gets a workout in our household. It does have a smooth plastic handle but it's contoured to give a tight grip.

I bought it at a Target store but it is available on Amazon too.

Here's a photo of zucchini made into strings with it so you can see the size it makes.

I don't purchase many one-use kitchen tools but the julienne peeler has been worth the price to add variety to vegetable dishes.

I see it copes well with slicing and julienning. And what about peeling of vegetables? Because for me it is also important.

Use a regular cheap peeler for peeling skin and general peeling. Easier than the one you linked because less force will be needed.

Also, for you, owner of clumsy hands (LOL!) look into getting one (yes, one, you don't need a pair) cut resistant glove.

I have a Precision Kitchenware one that I won in a contest. I rarely use it, like I used it once, but it is so sharp and so efficient, that I worried, like you for the safety of using it. Flip it, and it peels also, but I just use my veggie peeler.

I have a commercial mandoline also, and same thing. Fear of getting cut. You must be careful with these tools for sure!

I just have the cheap one that amazon sells, "ultra sharp" or whatever, and it works fine. While you can flip it, I see that side as more suitable for making thin slices than for peeling. I agree with everyone else that a regular peeler is better for peeling.

I'm much less afraid of the julienne peeler than I am of my OXO mandoline and it's much less hassle to clean.

Nevertheless, I decided to try peeler from Deiss. I will describe my impressions and peeler's pros and cons after Amazon deliver it. Thank you all for your advice.

The best vegetable peeler I've encountered is the Kuhn Rikon Piranha. Very 'aggressively' engages the vegetable surface. Worth the extra few bucks.

Darn it! I wish I didn't read the posts when people get or are contemplating getting a new gadget. I just can't help myself and have to get one. Went to Kitchen Collection at the outlet mall and got a inexpensive julienne peeler to try. By the way, I saw Alton Brown using a needler last week to tenderize a round steak. Yep, straight to the KC to find one. They had one similar to the one he used for $9.99. It works like a dream and that steak was super tender.

I have no self control!!!

My food processor (Kitchen-aid brand) Juliennes with one of the blades that came with it. I use it for my carrots in cabbage slaw. Makes quick work of a tedious process.
