I whittle away from me. I cannot seem to find a peeler that fits my hand comfortably to use it as I would a paring knife. I have quite a collection, as I keep buying new ones, but always return to my old all-metal one. Alas, it broke last night and now I don't know WHAT I'm going to do. Jokingly, I told my DH that I was going to have to check the second hand stores to find another old one.

Yes, Joann, I too peel like peeling an apple and I think you do need a good peeler to do that. I think you have better control over the peeler doing it towards you.

Away. I use a Zyliss. I love their products. The styles with the so-called ergonomic handles are too big for me.

I peel towards me. I have several of the older potato peelers that I have picked up at garage sales, they stay sharp. The new stainless steel aren't sharp enough.

Oddly, when peeling potatoes, apples or pears, I peel towards me. But for carrots, I peel away.

I use a paring knife for potatoes and apples and a peeler for carrots. I peel the carrots away from me.

Straight things, like carrots or cucumbers, away. Round things, like apples, toward. Potatoes, it varies according to the size of same.

Ditto what Azzalea said. I get the eyes out of the potatoes with a paring knife.

OXO and towards me. OXOs peeler won awards, so I bought one for each of the women in my family.

my peeler is a Rada. I've had it for 15 years, and it's now starting to dull.

I don't use a peeler for anything. I have spent a lot of money on peelers and I haven't found one I like. Maybe I'll spend more money and buy and OXO. I don't buy carrots I have to peel, so that isn't a problem. I peel my cucumbers the same way I peel my potatoes, etc. And I can usually end up with one really long peel. That is my goal. :)

Same as Nan nc, I have an old Ekco peeler my Mother gave me when I got married, have had it for over 48 years and it's still sharp.

I peel away and I do have a good peeler so I disagree with if you can't peel towards you, you have a bad peeler.

I used to use these cheap ones that used to be good and then they starting breaking on me. So, I looked around and found one and for me being left handed it works as I find so many peelers trying them won't work for me being left handed, but this one sure does and I sure hope it lasts me forever.

I used to be amazed at ones that use knives and peel, I would be slicing myself.

I use a knife to peel my cucumber. I cut off how much I want and then I take it and stand it up and go around in the circle taking off by slicing it off and so no fingers harmed or in the way, it goes straight down to chopping board.

I use the same peeler I bought decades ago and peel away from me. This peeler works better than any newer ones I've tried.

The few times I'm using a paring knife for other veggies, I peel towards me.

This topic always makes me think of the Evil Witch (aka the ex MIL). She made me feel like a fool when she saw me peeling a potato...she took the spud and peeler away from me and said to peel towards me. I wanted to tell her off so bad since I was cooking for her sorry butt.

I don't like a peeler for potatoes. I use a knife and peal toward me. For carrots, I use a peeler and peel away from me. That's the way I was taught as a kid and I don't think I've ever tried to peel towards myself. I leave the peels on the cucumbers and can't (at the moment) think of anything else I peel.

My mom never used a peeler. She used the paring knife for potatoes and scrapped the carrots.

I never really thought about it before. When using a veggie peeler, I peel away from me. When using paring knife, I peel toward me.

Away. I just bought a new peeler made by Kitchenaid and boy is that thing SHARP.

I like my Rada one, and it depends on my mood and what I am peeling--size etc.

I have my own way of peeling potatoes. First I circle the potato the long way, leaving a big white strip. Then I peel what's left of each "half" of the skin. Works for me! I have three different peelers.

I'm like Kathleen...I can't for the life of me peel a potato with a paring knife! I use a peeler and peel away. Have used an old-fashioned one for years and years. Now my daughter bought me a new-fashioned one but I still peel away. I'm left handed also.

I peel towards me with just about all fruits and veggies. The one exception is carrots...I just scrape those. The new age peeler I'm curious about is the "Titanium Peeler" I think it is called. You can run it back and forth, it peels both ways. Anyone heard good or bad about that peeler? NancyLouise

NancyLouise, The Rada peeler works both ways. It's good for both left and right-handed people, and I can peel my carrots with a back and forth motion.
