Long Memory? Or Stuck in a Rut?

My cat is almost 16 years old and has lived here since she was a kitten. My daughter is almost 27--lived here most of her life, until last summer.

Six months later, the poor cat STILL is sitting by the door every night between 10 and 11, watching.... waiting.... HOWLING.... for dd to come home.

Granted, she does this every afternoon around 3:15--but DH actually DOES come home by 3:30. When is the poor thing going to figure out that DD really, truly has moved out?

I have no answer on this one. Animals are amazing, cats hate change. I wonder if the cat has now made this a new habit? Could your daughter maybe bring and old tshirt, unwashed that has her smell, for the cat's bed? Maybe that might comfort the cat.

awww...poor widdle kitty...good idea about the clothing...but that might make it worse...cause then kitty is really gonna be wonderin where her buddy is.

I never really knew how much the kitties depend on me until just recently..she even get greets me at the door when I come in from work...she knows to stand back and wait until the dogs have done their barking, hollarin, lick me to death thing,,,then she comes in for some lovin...Mama cat just acts mad and visiting is ALWAYS on her terms!

When I was an 8th grade savage, me and another kid used to shoot spit wads through Bic pen tubes onto the seat of our math teacher's pants when he turned toward the blackboard, while the rest of the class looked on approvingly. Then, when that thrill faded, we shot straight pins shoved through a tiny, rolled-up pieces of cotton ball (sorta like feathers on an arrow). We ended up tossing sandspur clusters. Nothing seem to get his attention. Good thing we ended up graduating the eighth grade when we did. We would have probably escalated to firearms eventually. I think all 8th grade teachers should receive combat pay! SAVAGES!

There are always going to be those more fortunate in many ways~children/grandchildren, profession, intelligence, beauty, and yes, the worst beast of all, the 'almighty dollar.' Whether it's purses, houses, vacations, decorating, clothing, shoes, or beauty treatments, and both spouses or one spouse has been blessed with being successful and comfortable in life, some of that 'success' needs to be given back. One of our forum member's(you know who you are ;) has been very fortunate to have the opportunity to visit a third world country, but in reading her posts, it wasn't as much about the trip as it was about bringing gifts for the children. It's very obvious she is giving back and sharing her blessings. 'Rules of the universe' dictate much of my life also, and it makes my heart sing when I know I can change a life, feed an animal, or possibly. *save* both, with just a small part of my blessings. What a wonderful feeling! With that said, if you aren't 'playing by the rules' you shouldn't be splurging on material possessions, especially when you are aware a contribution to ANY organization can make a difference in our world. If you think an expensive pair of shoes makes you happy, giving reallllllllly makes you happy!

nwdrip- Thanks for chiming in! I am thankful for any advice and I appreciate you commenting on my thread. I think painting the back of the cabs dark brown would be really cool with some colorful dishes. Suero- I never would have picked a rug like that, but you are right, it works. My only thing is that I am, in general, trying to avoid red. I had red accents all over my last apartment, and I want to go for a different feel. However, I get to see what a teal looks like, and how patterns interact with my curtains, so thank you!!! I have continued to look at other rugs. Hubby has been almost no help. He is very picky on what he wants, but he won't help me look. I have browsed through approximately 4000 rugs by now, and every suggestion I have had, he has shot down. :( Here are some of my favorites right now. Please tell me what you guys think: A B C D E F G Hubby wants a border around the edge, doesn't want flowers, only wants a hint of color, doesn't want stripes, doesn't want beige. Please note that most of *my* faves at least have one of those things. This one that I posted earlier appears to still be hubby's favorite: But he's not sold on it.

Interesting take on change and ruts. As much as I see I may be in a rut, I don't consider myself adverse to change in the least. I thrive with change.. I made my living selling and implementing change. But I don't necessarily see the majority of things we're discussing here as "game changing" changes.. "life changing" changes. I suppose a makeover could be life changing.. but for most of us, I doubt that's the case. Pal, I think you've made an excellent point. Having routine and some things simplified in one aspect of our lives can give us the freedom to seek change in others. I worked and lived with some brilliant researchers and they all had odd quirks in their routines. I too know people who literally eat the same things every day (not quite the extreme of the same thing every meal lol). I think of this as variety though-- not change. I guess that is my big aha of the day.. variety does not equal change. Personally, I like variety but I need change. I am on the cusp of a change-- I am looking for a new job, i am preparing for the eventual move of my bf cross country. My life is going to change a great deal.. and I am impatient. I am sitting here ready for the changes to come.. but I am impatient. The one great mystery is that while we can welcome and even direct change, we cannot control it. Sure, I can change my hair, my nail color.. .I can try new recipes or cooking techniques. I can change my toilet paper and my workout routine.. but that's not going to make the job offers come rolling in. They might give me the illusion of change as I sit here waiting for it though. Or not :) I have been through this before. The antsy feeling of anticipation and impatience. I remember when I first saw the movie Chocolat-- silly as it is, I remember having a great sense of understanding when a wind came up and Vianne Rocher (Juliette Binoche's character) knew it was time to move on.. I liken it to the way my dogs used to respond to the big gusts in the fall that proceeded snow. They'd lift their noses and then perform antsy dances. Who knows what they were responding to.. could have been carried in with the winds scents.. or low pressure.. but it was a marked response to something in the air. I feel change is in the air and I am forced to sit here and wait for it. So yeah, I'll get my hair done.. select the new paint color for the lr... organize the pantry.. all so that I am ready when the new opportunity arrives. Kind of like the nesting behavior we see in expectant mothers. (and please -- no apologies for branching a thread. That's what conversations do! It's all good!)

They are such creatures of habit. Our little dog won't come to bed until DH comes in. He's been in the hospital since January 5th, and the first night she slept on the couch all night waiting on him. I took her to my parent's the next day since I knew we were in for some long days.

Exactly--about being creatures of habit.

Not to sound too argumentative here--but there are still plenty of DD's clothes and things around the house. And bed? why the cat doesn't have a bed, she sleeps in ours, of course--LOL--right between our feet (and isn't any too thrilled if we decide to get 'cuddly' with each other--she's very jeolous of DH).

I've considered taking her to visit DD, but it's about 7 miles away, and the poor cat gets totally stressed out even for the short 2 mile drive to the vet. Since that's the only place she's ever gone in the car, in all her life, I'm certain she'd be completely freaked out by the longer ride to DD's condo.

Funny thing is, until about 4 years ago, we had another cat who ran the house. This one was just a knick knack sitting on the sofa most of the day. Since she's the queen bee, she's really taken over and takes her responsibility for the household seriously (I can't go to the bathroom without her supervising--and I'm supposed to PET her while I'm there. But heaven forbid I so much as walk past the door if she's in the litter box--LOL)

She really is a little cutie, though. I just dread the day she's no longer with us, and she's already 3-4 years past the average lifespan for her breed.

I read your post, and then went into the kitchen to get a cup of coffee...and noticed my Foxy curled up on the floor in the living room - in the very spot where "her" chair used to be.
Over the Christmas holidays, I took it over to the house we're moving into in March, for her to get acclimated to the new location. she curls up in it over there, but I guess she's still stuck with the idea of that spot here.

She's about 15 years old (rescued 14 years ago), and has also been a totally indoor cat.
