I think my HVAC Co, S###d me.

Had to have my thermostat replaced on my electric heat pump unit.Call a conpany I've been using since early 90's and trusted there work and honesty.Tech checked it out and said I needed a new thermostat .He was here about 30 min. replaced it and gave me a bill for $293.00.
Today I went on line and got the price of the thermostat he used for replacement.It is a Honeywell FocusPro TH5000.The price was $30-$40 range for a FocusPro Non-Programmable, 1H/1C Thermostat.The company I've used long term charged me only $234.00 for the unit.The service call was $59.00 which I thought was fair.Like I said my total bill was $293.oo..Thought a fair price would be $130.00 -$160.00 .
I feel I have been way over charged???Am I wrong?

I wouldn't say they over charged. The $59 service call is a hook,they don't work that cheap once on the job.

Jt Some questions please. What is your location? What size home living area? What size furnace and eff are you replacing? What size AC are you replacing? I would like to know the exact mdl number evap coil for each quote. What thermostat is proposed for the Carrier quote? That is a big difference between the 96% eff Carrier furnace and the 80% eff Trane furnace-both 60 K input. That would be about 56 KBTUs output on the Carrier and about 48 KBTUs on the Trane. Not insignificant. I don't care for some shortcuts that homeowners make particularly on reusing linesets and using existing thermostats that shortchange a nice furnace's operational capability. The biggest problem with HVAC zone systems is knowing when to choose it as a solution and when not to. Some HVAC companies it's about "sell, sell, sell" whether or not it works... there's more money in "sell, sell, sell" --- when it's only about money? So does the comment above mean I do it for free? No. If you think that you are reading things that aren't there. New construction? best to choose separate systems 9 times out of 10. In order for a zone system to work, you have to know what you are doing. Most HVAC companies staff (the techs they send you) are 20-30 year olds. How much practical experience could they possible have? It's best for HVAC zone systems to be an elegant solution. A HVAC zone system is a tool in the tool bag. Not all homes are suitable for zone systems. Some homes there is no other way, and in some cases complications to those problems will make an HVAC zone system design possibly more prone to problems. You have a problem now, do you want more problems. These decisions among others are decided "in person" --- so considering that becareful what information you decide upon from the internet. Just because it's here doesn't necessarily mean it's true. That said: Depending on equipment level chosen, how many different floors you have in your structure, how much room you have available... will all be factors that make you decide one way or another. From there it's in your best interest to pick a contractor that is skilled: especially when it comes to HVAC zone systems. (there's a lot of garbage out there.) Sizing can be less of an issue when you have multiple units. Because each unit is controlled independently, provided of course the unit itself is not over sized for the area in which it serves resulting in excessive short cycling. In your case 3 ton plus 2 ton isn't necessarily equal to 5 tons of cooling... unless you drive those thermostats really low. By having two systems with total capacity of 5 tons (which, most of the time this would be oversized for a 1700 - 1800 sq ft structure) has a few advantages. 1. You have the ability to use one system only during low heat days or set the opposing unit higher. The unit set higher only runs if load conditions warrant.... meaning if it's not hot, the thermostat controlling the unit does not call... the unit can not run without a call... 2. Utility bills can be much less... because you rarely use both systems at the same time. You run the bedroom system when you sleep, the other when you're awake. If you have a home office in one the bedrooms you may need to rethink things a bit. 3. Extra capacity for when it's hot out. When it's hot you have the capacity to cool the home. (even while entertaining guests --- additional people add heat) Remember heat waves come, heat waves go... a so call 'properly sized' AC system is essentially properly sized roughly 10% of the time... especially if that system is a single speed AC system. Alot of people I come across like to sleep cool. So for that reason I doubt I would change the configuration of the space. Once you realize what you have, the choices you make are mostly budget type concerns. Essentially a set up like this runs like a 2 stage system. This kind of subject is above the pay grade of many... choose your contractor wisely. I service the Katy, Texas area.

Personal experience (not a pro). We actually had to cut the line on our humidifier to service our water heater in our last house (not exactly sure why) but we didn't bother reconnecting it. The whole house humidifier was a nuisance, tbh. Way too much humidity in the house, our windows would ice up and then melt, causing damage to our window trim (and probably windows as well). We opted to just humidify the rooms that needed it instead (which, in a new build tight house, only ended up being the baby's room just because). Current build we opted not to install, and so far the builder has cautioned us repeatedly about too much humidity in the house and how to manage it. Apparently people over humidify and then ruin their windows, and it's such a common problem that we got a sermon in our walk-through, an email, a printed sheet, a warning from the service manager, and a warning from the project manager. We live in MN - doesn't get much colder. Anyway, before doing anything maybe live with it for awhile.

Did you ask for a non-programmable thermostat? For a little more money you could have gotten a thermostat with more features. They might have given to you for the same price.

For a plain Jane thermostat like the one he received, he probably could have installed it himself.

There are different models of the Focus Pro made, all in $20-40 range in ebay.

I've been trying to talk to the owner of this company for two days.So far I haven't recieved a call back.They say he is out or in a meeting.Which I am shocked for no call back.This is a small home owned company that has always gave great service at a fair price.

Service call is more like $90 - $100 where I'm at unless your a major customer (new home builder with numerous homes under construction..then it's $75.00). Any major additional time on the job extra of course.
Would expect part to be marked up a significant percentage on a low cost small item to cover the cost of their employee driving company truck to the supplier to get it and overhead of their shop (somebody has to process the bill etc.)...so maybe $75 to $100 for that convenience might be fair. In your case your getting hosed.

Since you've used this company since the 90's you might want to go their place of business and ask to speak to someone about your bill...mention your long time loyalty to their company and ask for some consideration. Got a feeling they'll work with you on the bill.

If not time to look for another company.

I don't want to get into a debate of how much a HVAC company should charge to install a new thermostat. I know I will never win that argument. However if the company it going to charge $293 for this service they should at least offer the customer the option of installing a programmable thermostat.

This is one of the reasons I try to help people whenever possible to install their own thermostats. Most of the time it is easy. There are some installations that are best left to a professional. This did not sound like one where a pro was necessary.
