I receive a "deal newsletter", posting deals from the internet. Occasionally, I find one I think might be useful to my friends here on the cooking forum.

At Penzeys Spices add any 1/2 cup jar of spices to your cart and apply coupon code "KINDNESS" to get that item for free. Better yet, coupon code "22150C" will add a free 1/2 cup jar of Northwoods Seasoning to your cart.

I wonder if anyone would use that coupon code? If so, I am glad to help. If not, please ignore!

sissy, I have a store in Grand Rapids and I need to stop there. They often send me free coupons, their product is good and their customer service is outstanding.

It's great fun to wanter around in te store too, sniffing the jars of stuff.

Thanks for the heads up, I know several members shop Penzey's.

GWlolo The link is great. I bookmarked it so I can pore over it some more. And your description of mustard oil makes me lust. What a wonderful resource you are! And, as I was fixing this last night and trying to get the rice burner set correctly to simmer for 50 minutes I remembered asking you why one needed a rice cooker. Silly me. Jadeite, I have most of the spices that are in Penzey's Vindaloo mix, but I would have NO idea how to adjust proportions. Of course, I imagine many recipes would tell me. But for now, using this will have to do. Report on last night's meal: The beef Vindaloo was OK. I was too tentative with the spicing, using slightly more than the minimum they recommended. I should have known better, as I really like spicy food. Next time I will use significantly more. (Penzey's does say the heat of this spice is adapted to American taste, and more cayenne may be desired. I found all the spicing, not just the heat, too mild the way I fixed it.) Next time, more spicing and either lamb or chicken. No potatoes (they were good, but I think I prefer just the rice).

I need to "standardize" my chili powder so I don't have a big surprise like this last batch of vegetarian chili. Has anyone used Penzey's chili powder? I see they have "chili 3000" and "chili 9000" but didn't see any "chili powder" on their website. I have been using 3 1/2 tablespoons of Adams brand which is kind of cheap but my recipe was consistently good. Then I switched to the Whole Foods bulk spice bin and didn't like that at all. I want good quality so I'm hesitant to use the cheap McCormick or Adams but hate to risk having another bad batch if Penzey's doesn't work out. Anyone used this for chili?

Oh, and I should have said, if you don't already receive their catalog, sign up. There is almost always a coupon for something free. Last time it was $5 off a $10 purchase. Recently I've gotten free cajun spice, cinnamon, and ground pepper. And they honor expired coupons and multiples. My son gets a catalog at my address but he's in NY for school so I always get him his freebie too when I go. He cooks a lot and loves Penzey's as much as I do.

Ladies, it's really not that big a deal it's the Penzey's catalouge not Gourmet! LOL My daughter said " Mom, what's with that? You make the pork all the time and I don't like the Spanikopita......brat! LOL Mind you the Phyllo pizza is a favourite of her and all her friends. I haven't seen the catalogue yet, they are mailing it to me at home and I'm at the cottage, so I have no idea what is in the mag vs on the website. I think the Spanikopita is only on the website but that the pork and the phyllo pizza are in the catalogue...but maybe not. Anyhow, it was fun.

I did use that coupon code awhile back and the free jar is nice- a half cup size in a glass jar.

I don't know how well it tastes but I have a lot of different seasonings, some freebies, and I make a blend of several to dip chicken thighs in before cooking in the grill pan. Very tasty.

The other night was Northwoods (mostly), Sate, Bicentennial, Mural of Flavor and Lamb.

Checked the Penzey's web site and it appears the KINDNESS coupon expired 7/11/11. Looks like the one for the Northwoods is still good tho.

Linda, I'm told that the coupons never expire and they've taken several expired ones from me at the store. I have in my purse right now a coupon for $5 a $10 purchase, a free jar of Northwoods seasoning and a free jar of my seasoning of choice. I definitely gotta get to Penzey's. I was going to stop last weekend, but I had Cooper in the Jeep and it was just to hot to leave him.

Anyway, I'd probably try the code anyway, and see if it works.

Jessica, you remember the nice staff at the Grand Rapids Penzey's? They're still there, same people and they really do greet me by first name and they still remember a couple of forum visits, LOL.
