Gas furnace reaching High Limit switch and cutting off

I have a 14 year old furnace that has recently been NOT restarting. It may work for a week and then may have to be manually reset 2 to 3 times a day. Then it may work for a day or 2 without problem. I had techs over and they didn't have a clue, other than that it may be a duct problem. Ducts haven't changed, but I presume they could get clogged. I am built on a slap, so ducts were at a premium. If I leave the cold air return slightly open in the furnace room, it appears to appease the problem. I read on one of the posts that a bypass might help. Is that an 8 inch duct between the hot air duct and the cold air return? Also, my cold air return duct goes thru the attic. Could I open a 6 inch hold in the return air duct in the attic? would that cause me a problem? Seems that may be just enough. I have no other way to open more cold air returns inside the house.

Thanks in advance
