Help with electric fireplaces?

We have forced air gas heat and we're always cold...My husband was considering buying one of those fireplaces that is advertised in the magazine section of the newspaper...The one with the picture of the Amish delivering the fireplace...Any how, are they any good, would they produce enough heat or use too much electric? Looking for advise.....

how big a room is it going in?

if it is the one i am thinking of it does not use much electric, not like a big space heater would. but i think it must run for a while to push the heat around.

If you like the look, have the space and the money go for it.

You should know that the two sizes offered, 1000 & 1500 watt units use the same amount of energy and produce the same amount of heat as a portable heater 1/10 the size and price at Home Depot.

IÂm back! This time, looking for help creating a "hearth". IÂve been trying to find photos on the web, but canÂt really find anything that would work. Again, this is a small townhouse. The dining area is terrazzo tile; the living area is carpet. I do have a few tiles that I could use to set the fireplace on, or I could try to build something out of brick. I could also do what deltabreee suggested and build a "stage" for it. Most of the photos and discussions I see here are for full-sized homes, not tiny townhouses like mine, so I donÂt know whether anyone can relate, but, while I donÂt have a lot of money, I donÂt want it to look cheap or tacky, either. Any ideas? Has anyone else ever done such a thing?

Here is what it looked like when we bought it--former owner's furniture. I don't like the light colored furniture--trying to decide if I like the large cases next to it. . The rest of the room for now only had a couch and chair.

Don't believe the bullsh%t advertisement. An electric heater is an electric heater, no matter how it is repackaged.

To figure your hourly cost of running an electric heater, multiply the power consumed by your delivered price of electricity. For me, it would be:

(1500 watts / 1000 watts per kw) x 16 cents per kw-hr = 24 cents per hour.

PS: I like the oil-filled electric radiators for a small room. They're quiet (no fan) and safe.
