**HELP!!! Bryant Ev olution Controller Issue

All: I have posted before and now I am pulling the trigger on installing a Bryant duel fuel system (specs below). One problem my HVAC contractor just now told me was that I can't use the Evolution controller with system we picked out. Am I missing something? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! One solution he recommended was to bypass the two stage HP by using the jumper to make it work as a single stage HP system and then be able to use the evolution controller. He says that since I have the Variable blower I would not notice any difference.

Specs are as follows:

Main Floor:

A/C: Bryant, 226A, Two stage, 5 Ton 16 SEER

Furnace: Bryant, 315AAV, 135K BTU, 80%, Two stage, 5 Ton, 16 SEER

Coil: Bryant, CNPVP, Tin plated, 5 Ton

Controller: Bryant Evolution

2nd Floor:

A/C: Bryant, 226A, Two stage, 2 Ton 16 SEER

Furnace: Bryant, 315AAV, 70K BTU, 80%, Two stage, 3 Ton, 16 SEER

Coil: Bryant, CNPVP, Tin Plated, 2.5 Ton **NO CHANGE**

Controller: Bryant Evolution

I did a quick check on the Bryant web site. It seems the 226A heat pump does not list the Evolution controller as a supported theromstat. This seems strange to me. The Carrier Performance series heat pumps to support the Carrier Infinity controller. I don't understand why the 226A would not. Call Bryant to get confirmation.

It makes no sense to limit your two stage heat pump to a single stage. Two stages are great for the summer to lower the humidity. I am suprised the contractor would suggest this as a solution.

You have a quote for 8 tons of cooling and 205K of heating. This must be a very big house! Has the contractor done a Manual J load calculation? This is a lot of heating and cooling capacity.

Why is the contractor specifying a 2.5 ton coil with a 3 ton heat pump. Is this an approved AHRI match?

Finally what are your gas and electric rates? Are you able to use a 95% EFUE furnace and if so is it more cost effective than using the 80% EFUE furnace with heat pumps?

A couple of answers for you:

1. Will do on the call to Bryant.
2. House is approximately 5,200 sq ft with basement. The problem is that both units have to be in the attic.
3. Mistake on the 3 ton coil...should read 2.5 ton.
4. Relatively low. 80% makes more sense.

pricing for the heatpump isn't terrible. Its nice equipment. 2 stage condensorm variable speed blower. - etc. Can't you have this contractor do the additional electric work for a good price? They don't sound too terrible. How good are your windows? What type of insulation do you have in walls and attic? 9ft celings everywhere and some rooms with 12ft and 16ft is alot of space with 2600 sq. feet. 4 tons could be too small. I would prefer 5-ton 2 stage. You could run most the time at low stage. Its possible your ductwork won't support more than 3.5/4 ton though. I wouldn't think you would need new electric to go outside to your new heatpump condensor. Its very possible you would need new electric to the air-handler to power the heat-strip. Regarding the electric and the hotwater tank you might want to consider a heatpump hot water tank to save on your electric consumption. What do you pay for electric? You could try calling some contractors and asking for some phone estimates. If they can't give you a rough idea over the phone tell them sorry. There is contractors that want business and are competitive. You need to find them when they are slow. Maybe they are still busy because of the winter season. btw- how does the current A/C work on hot days? is your ductowork noisy? I think the 2-year warranty is good. Hopefully any problems with the equipment install would be uncovered in 2 years.

Gotcha. I will pass this along to the builder for him to have hvac guy do. I spoke to hvac guy about the $400 overrun vs the over-the-phone/options fax estimate (turns out it is not $1k -- $600 of that is the builder's problem for the 13 SEER base upgrade). He said that $200 of that came from needing to add 120v wiring to the power humidifier since it does not run off the furnace fan. We didn't specifically get to the other $200 as he stated that FILCAB was $450, and EZXCAB was $275. FILCAB is what was in the quote. So after a $40 MERV10 filter for EZXCAB we're now at $10 less than the upgraded quote. Interesting, especially since he previously said FILCAB was $225 -- and I had to set him straight that FILCAB could only take MERV8 filters from what I understand. I'll make sure the builder also gets a competing quote. And I am getting the complete model number of the coil in writing, of course.

If you are buying a Bryant Evolution furnace, then you should buy the Evolution controller. The controller, furnace, and AC condenser form a communication system which the Honeywell thermostat cannot reproduce. Each component will report any problems to the controller. These problems are captured in the memory for review by the service tech. Bryant also offers a verion which has internet access if you want this feature. I would not be concerned about getting replacement parts for the Bryant controller. There are no mechanical parts to fail. If it ever did fail, the only practical option is to replace it. It is not a repairable item.

Yes, there was a Duct D as well. They followed that plan well and I think they did a great job with the ducts. All of them are taped with the metal tape and have goop all around the seams so it looks to be sealed quite well. I will insist they put in the modulating dampers and will give them the list of items you mentioned. They have already grumbled some on the cost of the modulating dampers. I will find out tomorrow and give an update. What might be some of the pitfalls of configuring the system you mentioned above? I am going to keep a close eye on this and would like to ask them to do the proper things. Thanks a bunch. I feel much better after chatting with you.

What is the breakdown of area for basement, first floor, and second floor?

If you have a basement, then why do the furnaces have to be in the attic?

Have you gotten other quotes?

If the heat pump is 3 tons, then I think the coil must be at least 3 tons. The coil can be bigger, but not smaller.

Couple of answers:

1. Main floor - over 2.2k sqft.
2. Top floor: over 1k sq ft.
3. That is where the other units are and the basement is finished and has its own unit.
4. HP is 2 ton and coil is 2.5

Can you run all 4 stages?

IMO the equipment for the main floor is oversized. You should ask the contractor how he calculated these sizes. Oversizing equipment causes problems.
