grandma needs new washer

ARRRH!! I just replaced the water pump in my old TL Whirlpool and it's still leaking. So, time to buy a new one; and this time, it will be a front loader. I'm in my 60s and live alone. Recommendations, please!

Well, I'm guessing here that you don't "need" the extra capacity of the fl's but just "want" one... in that case, I think your starting point is a model with a heater. Do you want the stacked? If so that narrows things down some, and then you pick, I persoanlly think, by the service you know you can get from the local guys near you... if you kmnow the local whirlpool guy is great to deal with... use him... if the local appliance place is recommending and servicing bosch or lg... go with that.. miele is mostlikely by far the 'best' machine, but you pay big time for that and need 220 electric service, which most other washers don't require...

I'm a happy Speed Queen owner. I'd strongly disagree with the CR low rating if I was a member. I'm not and I won't be, given the way they rate washers. Apparently, CR doesn't place much or ANY(?) weight on cycle length or rinse performance. Speed Queen conventional top loaders rock these areas. They talk about good expected reliability for washers that have one-year warranties and say nothing about SQ 3-year "bumper to bumper" warranty, 5-year motor and 10-year transmission warranties. If the manufacturers really thought their washers would have low failure rates, they'd offer longer warranties as a "free" (to the manufacturer) way to lure customers. The CR wash performance is tilted toward deeply soiled or stained clothes. Fine, but that's about 1% of my laundry and I pre-treat stains for excellent results anyway. CR claims the SQ lacks certain features compared to other models. Big deal. I value the simplicity of electro-mechanical timers and manual (side-flow) bleach dispensers. They just work. There are no expensive computer boards to fail. No Automatic Temperature Control means I get 127-degree hot water wash (measured) from my 130-degree adjusted gas water heater. If I wanted to adjust my water heater thermostat, I could get a hotter wash instantly. My bright whites are excellent at the current temperature, given the proper measure of good detergent. It doesn't "boil" the clothes, but I get excellent wash performance and the dryer gets the clothes hotter anyway if I was worried about nasties that need heat to kill (I'm not.) My HOT cycle is about 20-25 minutes, start to finish. I can do four loads in the time it takes some of the High Efficiency machines to heat its water to the 130-degree range for a single load. My hot water enters at 127-degrees and the wash finishes at 125-degrees. The thermal mass of about 15 gallons of water easily exceeds the mass of clothes and tub, so I don't lose much heat over the course of an 8-12 minute hot wash cycle. CR cares nothing about spin drain vs. neutral drain. SQ is one of the few (only?) manufacturers starting the spin while the tub is full of water and allowing it to drain as the spin picks up speed. It leaves the clothes better spread out on the tub for the spray rinse or 300G final spin. Most TL washers stop, drain, then spin leaving the clothes bunched up in the bottom part of the tub. SQ washers aren't for everyone. They're not for technology geeks. They're old school, but I'm among the group of consumers that appreciate excellent results from basic, well executed design.

Have you looked at the Frigidaire Affinity AFT7000FS? It is 27" Depth, saving you 1/2", plus it has an internal water heater for sanitize, internal drum light, and lots of the same features of the larger washers. This is what I chose--see Grandma needs new washer. I had some depth restrictions, and I needed something quiet as my laundry room is near my LR/DR area. It is as quiet during washing and spin cycles as the Miele I previewed, and it better fit my budget restrictions. Heck, I even signed the delivery papers on top the washer as it was in its final spin without a problem! Houses here in San Antonio are built on concrete slabs, so vibration is not a huge issue. Also, the stacking kit is included in the price. A five year extended warranty on the pair was only abt. $200 more. Right now, Frigidaire is giving a $100 rebate on this washer, and my local water company gave me a $100 credit because it is an eligible energy star rated washer. That paid for the extended warranty. Plus, I got a way better deal from a local appliance dealer than the big guys--Lowe's and Best Buy! I like to give local business men my business whenever as I can. It's hard to compete with the large corporations.

Never had a FL before, except when my dad was stationed in Germany in the 50s. Since they save water (a huge issue in Texas) and seem to wash clothes cleaner, decided to go the FL route. Actually only had the Whirlpool for two years; got it from my daughter when my 30 yr. old Maytag had died (was second hand from her grad school days).

Spent some time on the computer this weekend and did some looking. Have a Miele dealer only a couple of miles from me. They are great machines, the Mercedes Benz of washers. However, I drive a Honda and am a recently retired teacher. Champagne taste on a beer pocketbook. Am going to look at Bosh Axxis and Asko tomorrow, but they may be more than I want to spend.

Don't feel I need the massive FL; but so far, I've not found Danby or other moderately priced Euro size washers locally. For American companies, I've narrowed it down to Sears HE2t & Frigidaire Affinity ATF 7000. Frigidaire is only 3.5 cu.' has a narrower depth, which would be closer to what I have now, can be stacked, and does have an internal water heater. House is built on concrete slab, and laundry room leads from garage through French Doors to L-shaped LR and DR. Therefore, I'd like something quiet. Because house is on cul-de-sac, garage angles and laundry room is shaped like a right triangle with the entry to DR at narrow top of triangle, so narrower depth would be advantage.

Suggestions for other smaller size FL with onboard heater that are reasonable are welcome as well as any issues with the washers mentioned here.
