I would hang art on the large wall behind the tv. A large piece or a nice grouping will add alot to the space. On the TV shelf a tall vase or lamp might help balance the table. It is a nice space and I love the light. Just needs a bit of color thru art perhaps.

I would make a reading nook out of it. A nice, comfy chair, table, lamp,etc. Or, a small game table and a pair of chairs. And a plant or two.

What about an 'open wall'? Basically, you'd construct something to visually continue the little stairwell wall up to the ceiling. NOT a full solid wall, but maybe a few shelves on skinny poles or risers with some nice ceramic or art glass pieces on them. You could even build a skinny box/frame for your TV and put it in the open space if that height would be better. (Put a painting on the stair side.)

I would also create a reading nook. Perfect spot for one. Comfy chair with footstool or ottoman, lamp-either floor lamp or table lamp, pile of books, and a small table (which is why I would probably choose a floor lamp).

Can you show the rest off the room? I wonder how it would look if you moved the TV to another wall and then put the back of the sofa to the half wall. I also would use the corner as some kind seating nook, such as for reading.

I think I would mount the tv on the wall at the very back, the stair wall. It would visually enlarge the room and take the focus off the short wall. Right now I think you are kind of making the short wall a focal point.

You know, best years, my relatives did that in their LR, and it works GREAT! In front of the half wall, they have an antique trunk. In the summer the grandkids use it as a bench, and it bets the snowman collection for Christmas.

That is an odd arrangement! I would be inclined to build the wall up into an enclosed staircase with a door.

I agree with snookums - If you have the budget for it, I would build the wall up (looks like you could use wall space with all your gorgeous windows and open concept). I would do a fairly shallow window seat on the left under the lone window or a reading nook. Looks like you have children - you could also create a game table area in front of the window.

I would put a huge live tree in that corner - it would be so happy with all of that gorgeous natural light and would bring some nice height and texture to the room.

I agree with others that the focus seems to be on the short wall and I would be inclined to put a couch there, but it depends on how much wall you have on the right side.

Do you have a pic of that part of the room?

Also, agree that your corner would make a great reading nook with a comfy chair and tall reading lamp.

You know, another thing with that wall. I wouldn't want to put a couch or other climby thing there because if you have young kids, they might end up falling down the stairwell.

I agree with a tall plant in that beautiful light corner with maybe an ottoman for sitting in the sun or a reading nook.

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and ideas! This is really the only wall in this space. Behind one couch is my kitchen and eating area - no walls. Behind the other couch is a sitting area with a fireplace - again no walls, only columns. You can see a little in the pics in the thread I linked below. BTW I did go with buttercream:)

I like the idea of a wall, but not sure that is a solution right now. I could probably get my husband to go with a big tv though:) I had thought about the reading nook, or possible writing table, desk area. I like the idea of a big tree too - the Christmas tree always looks good there.

I'd cover that back wall with a composed variety of framed things; put a tree in the corner with a good reading chair, ottoman, side table, and floor lamp.

Then I'd paint the low wall a deep color, to turn it into a piece of furniture in the room rather than a break in the wall..

Nothing on the shelf. Leave the TV where it is. A huge TV will turn the room into a shrine to television watching, and I bet your life has a lot more to it than that!

Maybe you can flip the room and turn that little window corner into a reading spot? And have the couch against the half wall. You can also do a gallery on the stair wall, and it would also look like a gallery for the over the couch If you get the right sized frames and so on. More pictures please! I wanna see!

For the stairway wall -- I would add a grid of prints or photos ... maybe black-and-white family photos in white mats with black frames? Or keep it simple with one very large print or artwork ...

Yes -- for the corner -- I would add a large tree and perhaps try your wing chairs over there .... Or do a desk/arts-n-crafts corner desk and short storage shelves with baskets ....

We have a similar corner - too much space to leave alone, but difficult to extend the seating area into. I put a counter-height table and tall chairs there plus a ladder bookshelf and my girls use it for their homework, craft projects, etc. There is ALWAYS a project going on at our house LOL!

After seeing all of your pictures, the only suggestion I would have is to change the couch and two chairs....couch in front of windows and chairs in front of the open wall with pillars. What is in your room with the fire place? Could you make that the TV room or is that not feasible? The darker room would be better for TV watching and the lighter room would be good for sitting, reading or chatting.

These are some things I had around the house I thought I'd start playing with to see if anything might work. I hung my son's pics back up. I am replacing the two chairs with a chair and a half chaise type in a dark sage that will be angled toward the tv. So I have this chair available if I wanted to slip cover it.
I love the idea about painting the half wall dark. I think i will do that when my painter comes back for other work. The lamp is just from another room for an idea.
So - any thoughts on this arrangement in the corner?

I would do my best to find a different place for the TV.

I would try to avoid putting anything against that pony wall other than a pretty parlor table or occasional table. I think that area should serve as more of a walkway. That wall is essentially a "guardrail" for your stairway.

If you had pretty metal or wooden balusters instead you wouldn't put anything substantial against it. Make it less of a focal point if you can.

Just my less than experienced opinion.

I think it looks SO much better with those beautiful photos hanging there! I like the 2nd arrangement, better; the first looked awkward, although I could see the appeal of looking out the windows.
