When the electricity went out our gas stove pilot wouldn't lite automatically and we lit it with a match so I know it works. Well, at least with our old gas stove back in the 70's.

Is there gas coming out of the oven burners ?

Be sure thee is no buildup of gas, before you try to light the burners.
If you have a barbecue lighter , use that, not a match.
If you smell a buildup of gas be careful.
If you do light it, stay to the side until you see the
burners lit.

Use a long stick like a BBQ bamboo skewer to light the flame. Star with low gas setting first.

I don;t know what kind of oven you have, you need to get as close to the burner as possible

It doesn't sound or smell like there is gas coming out of the oven burners. And it didn't make the "whooosh" noise like it does when it lights up. The stove top burners work just fine. I've got two oatmeal loaves in the toaster oven now. I'll see how they turn out. But I think the other loaf of oatmeal bread and the four loaves (I said I had 5 loaves to bake but it is really 7) of Amish Wheat might over proof before I can get them their turn in the toaster oven.

The above post was written last night after midnight but I forgot to post it. Oven still isn't firing up this morning.

Three loaves of Amish bread were.............toast, literally.

You may have the kind of oven that when the pilot light goes out, the pilot detector (kind of like a pneumatic thermostat) shuts off the main gas valve.

You may need to light the pilot light first.

1. If your oven is electronic ignition, then the high voltage line to the pilot light is loose or has gotten wet.

2. If your oven ignition is non-electronic, then the gas tube to the pilot is clogged.

In situation #2,
1. you can clean the tube out. It may be open at one end and insects can get in and died inside.

2. The gas jet can be clogged and needs to be cleaned.

Important: No matter what you do, first find and shut off the main gas valve before doing anything and have windows open.

I didn't forgot about that. If the Pilot has an electronic sensor, the pilot has to be lit.

Teresa, the same thing has happened to my oven. TWICE. Both times I took a wire brush and cleaned the holes/jets in the burner on the instruction of the repairman. No help.

Both times he replaced the igniter on the oven and it works like a champ.

You remember when I baked the brownies for the St. Jude's bake sale in my Nesco Roaster? That was why. It worked great for the brownies but I have a feeling bread wouldn't brown in there.

The good news? My repairman only charges $35 for a house visit. The bad news? The part was $109.00.

Despite the drama of late night baking last night, I still had a good day at the market selling all the loaves and corn muffins, and all but two bags of dinner rolls - one was traded for some good lemon poppy seed cookies. As I don't *do* electrical and natural gas, I will be calling a repairman this week. Guess I shouldn't complain as the appliance has been completely trouble-free for over 12 years.

I don't post here often, but I do so identify with your oven issues. I had six loaves of Italian Bread ready for the oven Thursday when my gas oven conked out. It
hadn't exactly been trouble free. It would take forever to come up to temperature, then would drop in temperature causing breads to fall during baking. Other times it would come on by itself, then heat to the maximum temp. Yep, I think it was haunted.
I will be baking for a farmer's market next Saturday.....if my new stove arrives in time. We hope it comes at least by Wednesday.
