Burial plots...odd question

I have an odd/disturbing question (well, at least to ME!).

My grandmother died last year in March. My 91 year old Grandpa, her husband, is still with us and doing great. However, I guess when you get to a certain age, you pick a place to be buried.

I didn't realize, but they buried grandma double deep, so that when grandpa goes, he can be buried on top (???). Is this common practice? I'd never heard of that before. Also, his NAME is on the headstone with hers with the year of his birth and an empty spot for the year of his death.

I don't know why, but I find this odd...of course, I love my grandpa and want him around for many years. I guess it's just tough to think about. How common are these practices?
