Tinning Copper Cookware

The paella discussion on the WFD #308 discussion got me thinking about a huge copper paella pan I bought on one my trips to Uruapan, Michoacan in Mexico years ago. Uruapan is near Santa Clara del Cobre, a town which is devoted to the making of hand wrought copper items which frequently show up in the market in Uruapan.

I've never cooked with this pan because it is bare copper, not tinned on the inside. It's not clear to me whether it is safe to cook in bare copper. I can send the pan to someone who will tin the pan for $100 or so and I am willing to do this, even though I paid much less than that for the pan. However, if I am assured I can cook in the plain copper pan without poisoning everyone, I will do that. If someone can give me definitive information about this I would appreciate it.

BTW, the state of Michoacan is highly involved with the current drug wars, which is a very sad situation. I had two thoroughly enjoyable trips there but would not consider going there under present conditions. Too bad.
