How do I say "No thanks" to a kid

I hate when this happens. I live in a rural area but have gotten to know the children of neighbors over the years and have watched them grow up. But one thing that I really feel bad about is when they come around selling pizzas, popcorn, or candy for their schools and I really can't afford it. The stuff isn't cheap! And most often now they want the cash or check when you order, not pay upon delivery. I try to buy at least one item, but sometimes there are three kids in the family selling for their class at the same school. ugh. Tonight,a little girl came to the door and I thought "oh no" because my wallet had $2 in it and my checkbook had just enough to cover me until payday should something come up (and I don't mean pizzas-ha). But I bought a small pizza for $10 and wrote the check.

How do you tell a little girl you don't want a pizza, or you can't afford a pizza. I know her mom, who was waiting in the van in the driveway, and probably could have talked to her about it but didn't.
