Fun with Fondant (pics)

My SIL is quite the cake decorater and she was down in TN this weekend at my niece's so we decided to get together so she could show us how to make homemade fondant and some other tricks. It was so much fun and she made it all seem so easy!

Marshmallow fondant is made by melting marshmallows in a double boiler then adding in water and vanilla.

Melted, then on to the Kitchenaid where we mixed in the powdered sugar.

My SIL kneading the fondant, then me frosting the cake with buttercream.

Rolling out the fondant, then covering the cake and getting it smooth.

Next, we kneaded in some gel food coloring to make the fondant pink and this powder which helps the fondant set up faster and we each made a ribbon and an animal-the elephant is mine. Of course we had to put everything we made on the cake including a pink and white border.

I'm so glad I did this-making the fondant was not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be and I think I'll be able to make some pretty cool stuff with it :)
