Anyone have frieze carpet upstairs? I need your help!!

We had water damage throughout the house and I need to replace carpet in the basement and the upstairs. I think I'm going to do berber again downstairs and do frieze upstairs. Of course you hear a different sales pitch from everyone!!! I'm looking at a Shaw anso-nylon frieze. I'm scared the frieze will look worn on my stairs. Is there anyone out there with some good advise. I need to order something asap.

I had a frieze put on my stairs when we built our house in 1984! The carpet lasted longer than I wanted it to, LOL. At that time we paid more per sf for that carpet than any other in our house. You just have to get a really high quality frieze for your stairs. Ours was very, very dense.

We installed Friese throughout our upper level as well as the stairs and love it! We've had it for 2.5 years and if you look closely you can see where we walk the most on the stairs, but it doesn't bother us because it doesn't show any dirt, feels so soft on your feet and it still looks/feels brand new. No offense but I hate Berber because it lacks all of the qualities that the Frieze has. And for years I've heard the professionals push the Berber claiming it's easier to maintain and cleans well, but I've yet to seen an installation that proves that to be true. On the other hand, we have an older cat that has gotten sick a couple of times on our Frieze and it cleaned really well. We took a tiny bit of laundry detergent watered down on a wet towel, blotted out the mess and then blotted it dry afterward and it cleaned beautifully.

I would have happily installed it on the entry level as well, but we have wood flooring. Instead, I'm considering having a large piece cut & bound to use as a rug in our living room.

reel_time; I am not sure how to answer you, because you say you don't want to spend the money on a Kirby just for one room. Later, you say you have hardwood floors and carpeted stairs. First, let's assume you want to vacuum the carpet, floors, stairs, and everything else. A Kirby would do the job. It has attachments to clean other things besides carpeting. You can find used and refurbished Kirbys for around $500 average. Canister vacuum cleaners, with power nozzles, also work well for this situation. Check out Riccar and Simplicity canisters with power nozzles. If you cannot put alot of money into a vacuum cleaner at this time, then check out the Panasonic MC-CG902. It can be found for around $200. If you want to just vacuum carpeting, you could look at Sanitaire uprights like the S647E or the S670A. You can find cheaper, similar uprights, from the same company, like the Eureka C2094G. These uprights do not have attachments, so you would have to buy a compact canister for other cleaning like the floors, drapes, etc. Another much cheaper upright would be the bissell bagged PowerGlide Platinum. You can find it for $80. Do not expect the cheaper vacuums to be up to par with the more expensive, better-quality vacuums. You cannot expect the Bissell to last as long as a Kirby or Sanitaire, for example. There are more options, but I could be writing all day. It would be better for you to give more detail of what you will be vacuuming.

Hi all, Just wanted to circle back for the benefit of anyone in the future who looks at this question. We went back and compared the carpet we chose to the "true friezes" and "true saxonies" they had. This Essential Living is something Karastan calls a "textured saxony." Fiber is much, much thicker, and considerable looser than a real saxony. Unlike the saxony, you can't make lasting footprints (or draw smiley faces as my son did), in the Essential Living carpet. About the same texture as the friezes, just a teeny bit longer and a little bit looser, and a bit softer. It's not as long as I remember it, and carpet vendor says they've had lots of experience putting it on stairs with no wear or safety issues. With his guidance we did scale the padding on the stairs back to a dense, thinner, pretty unyielding felt that should reduce concerns about too much padding/curve on stair treads. msrose - My doggie is an italian greyhound. He is such a sweet boy. We have two of these dogs and they are so fast, it keeps us on our toes :) catkin - I would describe our color as a medium/dark brown with tan pieces twisted in. Overall, I'd say it's on the dark side of medium. That color was great with pets and kids and I never had a problem with lint. When we bought our carpet the salesperson told us that the light colored carpet samples will look a little darker when installed in an entire room and the dark colors installed will look a bit lighter compared to the samples? I don't know if that it really true, but it seemed correct in our case... I thought the carpet looked slightly lighter then I had expected.

Thanks for responding. Do you know if your Frieze was nylon or polyester? Also, the frieze I'm looking it at is sorta of long - I don't think it's the short pile. I guess that's one of my main concerns about it matting. Do you remember what brand you bought?

We installed frieze 2 years ago in the LR, stairs, upper hall and MBR. It still looks brand new - with 2 tweens, 2 adults and 2 dogs. It's good stuff, very dense. Soft, soft, soft. We needed to replace our basement berber - water damage as well. After much hand-wringing I chose a frieze. It turned that basement from a dungeon to our favorite place in the house. So, what isn't hardwood in our home is frieze. LOVE it. It's all nylon stainmaster - mid/high grade.

I have Karastan Frieze in three of my bedrooms. It's three years old and looks brand new. It's a shorter nap then my Mom's. She got a cheaper brand at Home Depot and isn't too pleased with hers. Sorry I don't know what mine is called but it has some sort of new type of stain repellent stuff built into the fibers, and it feels like cotten on the bare feet. Love it. I got mine at Carpets of Dalton in Georgia and saved big $$ over Carpet One, where I originally picked it out. You can find what you want in your town, call them and get a price. They ship all over the world. Worth looking into. You may not have to pay tax on it either if you live outside of Georgia,...don't know. My carpet was something like $38 a yard from Dalton, but $50 something here in Atlanta. Big sales in October.
