installing 2cm non-laminated countertops

I am kind of liking the look of the thin countertops. We have chosen Cambria. Here's what my KD said when I asked about it:

"If you do a 2 cm top, we will have to customize every base cabinet and tall cabinet to be the proper height. Cabinets are not made for 2cm thick counters. They are made for 3 cm and 1 Ã¯Â¿Â½" tops."

So, my question, is there really a thing with the cabs for installing 2cm non-laminated Cambria. In my totally naive thinking, I just assumed you just plunk it on like the 3cm. I don't really understand the customization she's talking about. Would it be because of my range? We are not getting built-ins.

My GC has never done 2cm, and recommends 3cm, but is game to do it if I want it.

If you are doing any to the counter cabinets, she's right. The top alignement height will be off if you have tall cabinets also. If you aren't doing any tall cabinets and to the counter cabinets, then the overall height should be fine.

The other issue will be that the cabinets will need a complete solid plywood subtop to support the counters if you do not want to put a plywood subtop on them. That's probably a decent upcharge. Usually, the top of cabinets are not solid. They just have corner braces. So, to install 2 cm counter, a subtop of plywood is applied. That top will show with 2 cm, as it rests on top of the cabinets. So that's why 2 cm is traditionally laminated at the edge. You could also do a stainless steel trim piece, or a cabinet trim piece to hide the plywood. Your KD would actually have to open the spec book and see what trims can work with what size plywood. You might have to use 3/4" ply, as many trims are 3/4". But, I'd also have to open my spec book to see if any could work with 1/2" ply.

As far as your range goes, it will sit slightly higher with 2 cm tops than 3cm or 4cm laminated ones, but it's not that big of a deal if it's a free standing or a pro style range. It is a bigger deal with a slide in range, as those have a limited amount of adjustability and unfinished sides.

My builder messed up and installed 2cm quartz with no laminate edge and this is how it looks like. I original wanted a 1.5'' laminate edge but I'm not sure if this is how it's suppose to look because you can see the support underneath the slab. Does anyone know if this is the correct way the 2cm should've been installed and is the trim you're talking about above regarding covering the base shown on the picture?

The information you attached is from a site titled "Ask Maurizio". Maurizio is very informative. Also check out Tom Cordova's blog, The Rock, as well as the NSRA-National Stone Restoration Alliance site. All are helpful. Regarding your other questions, lighter colored granites in general are more prone to stain than darker ones, however, having them sealed and re-sealed every year or so protects it. Sealing them is nothing more than spreading a liquid sealant on top then letting it dry. Dark granites usually do not need to be sealed and they do not stain. Sealing is different than resin, which is done prior to the slabs arriving at the yard. Most, if not all, granite slabs are resined. This is a good thing, as it keeps the naturally occuring fissures from cracking and the mica and quartz pieces from chipping. Unfortunately there is no universal grading system. Most slab yards use their own system of grading, which is usually based on the rarity of the stone and its colors, rather than actual quality. The quality of granite is pretty consistent. Also, other stones that aren't acutally granite, but may be gneiss, work just as well for countertops. The sites I've seen caution about black granite from China. Many of them have been "doctored", meaning black polish has been applied, which makes them look better initially, but sometime after installation this polish wears off (unevenly) and the slab is actully grey, not as black as you thought. Who wants to end up with something different than what you purchased! Anyway, I hope this helps. Good luck and keep doing research before you purchase. I only wanted Verde Fuoco, and the 3cm slabs were too pink. We have an eased laminated edge. There really isn't a reason for concern: If you want no laminated edge you can have it; if you want a thicker look you can have it. Lily's kitchen is brilliant and she hated the look initially, but realizes that there is no reason to sweat it. BTW I'm a west coaster and found plenty of 3 and 2 cm slabs. Maybe on the east coast there isn't any 2cm rock, but I didn't find it typical at all that there was only 2cm. In fact I found a lot of 3 cm rock (Portland and Seattle). My rock is a little hard to find, so the slab I wanted happened to be in 2cm. no problem (but you need a plywood underlayment).

Gina, I am using 3cm granite on my bathroom and it will be installed sometime next week. I was hesitant because it will not have a laminated edge on it and won't be as thick as the 2cm laminated marble I used in the previous bathroom. Personally, I would be hesitant to use 2cm and not laminate it but that's personal preference. It won't look as thick and I want to make it look substantial. Otherwise I would have just gone with a granite tile countertop. Good luck with your project!

Are you just using the 2 cm stone or are they building up the edge? In my previous house (Spanish style) my outdoor kitchen area had a laminated bullnose edge. It worked for that house style, but not a choice I would make elsewhere. I much prefer the looks of an eased edge.
