Why do people think that when they exit a highway that they can just cross all lanes of traffic without yeilding?

My DB and DSIL were in an accident this morning because some idiot came off the exit ramp and right into their lane. They are ok, sore, DB's neck hurt, DSIL's knees were banged up, jeep is probably totaled. He had no choice but to hit the woman. Nowhere to go. They got checked out at the hospital and are home. I thank God that they weren't badly hurt. The other driver was sited, hope she had good insurance!

I've had someone do that to me more times than I can count. And don't get me started on right turn on red. Since that went into effect how many years ago, everybody thinks they don't have to stop at lights and signs anymore. Grrr.

Breathe, Tami, BREATHE!

I know, an accident is scary, hurts, and expensive... but when I read your post line, all I could think was BREATHE.

Glad they are fine. Wish it hadn't happened.

I see that in Minot all the time. That is when my Los Angeles driving kicks in and then they think twice!!!!
I am glad they weren't hurt worst.

When my mother was 86, she'd had an illness where her doctor had asked her not to drive 'temporarily'. When she was well, he told me the HMO lawyers wouldn't let him give permission for her to drive again even though he felt she could. I can be her worst critic, but also her biggest defender and arranged for her to be evaluated (cognitively and driving skills - the evaluator went out with her behind the wheel and rode with her, much like an initial drivers license test). He said she would have his blessing to drive if she would take two brush up classes for driving. Brush up ;0) She'd never had a lesson or test, she'd bought her license at the corner drugstore in Kansas for something like 50 cents. i.e. She didn't know, had never heard, two hands on the wheel and drove left handed for her evaluation. But - she took the required two classes at her own expense, passed with the instructors recommendation and resumed driving. In her city of about 38,000 and not on the freeway. Two years later she sold her home, car, moved to independent living in a city of more than 600,000 and its traffic where she didn't have the confidence to drive. That time it was her idea, and worked out fine - we didn't have to have the 'time to give me your keys talk'.

Back in the day to graduate from high school in ND you had to have taken driver's ed. It was part of our Phy. Ed. classes. High Schooler's today pay the Park/Rec dept. for classes given after school at the high school or a private entity. Both set up cones in empty parking lots for parking practice. There are two portions to completing a course. First they take a two week 10 hour course on the rules of the road. If they pass the test they can get a learners permit for hands on instruction. Just before their 16th birthday they take a "behind the wheel" portion where they actually get in a car and drive with an instructor. Students are expected to have so many hours behind the wheel practice with a parent before they take the behind the wheel portion of the class. I would expect the adjusting seat discussion to happen with the parent. These kids are not driving their own car. Some might be too timid to ask for help adjusting the seat. But I would agree the instructor for their own safety should be sure it gets accomplished.

Out main freeway and the only one in a good part of thr state is the same one Elmer wrote about I-5 It’s usually 3 lanes, often only 2 in some rural areas and 4 thru parts of urban area. I’m mostly on the 3 lane sections and it is clogged with truck traffic. Usually bumper to bumper in the right lane, then the middle lane is filled with trucks that think the right lane is too slow for them, so the are technically ”passing” the trucks in the right lane but they never move right ( or don’t for miles and miles). Both lanes are often so clogged that it’s not safe to try to squeeze in, or if you do, you are walled in on 3 sides by big rigs. Often they are driving an ok speed, but our feeways have lots of hlls, so they slow on the hills. Woe be to the drivers who want to try to get into the left lane to get out of the clog because it is filled with cars who think they are entitled to drive there exclusively because they are going over the limit. They never move right and if you get in their way they will tailgate even if there is no break in the trucks for you to move over and get out of their way. And I’m not talking about me going slow in the left lane; it doesn’t matter how fast you go, the aggressive drivers want no one in front of them.

People are stupid, plain and simple. We were out in the snow, low temps, icy roads and people were passing doing 70-80 mph. I just let them go by.

I think someone has a contract out on me. I had to brake for red light runners twice in two days. These were not the ones who try to get through on yellow or just hit the red at the last moment. These were people who ran the red long after my direction was green and after I was already in the intersection with other vehicles preceding me.

DH saw an accident happen right in front of him on the freeway today. Some idiot STOPPED on the freeway in the center lane because he wanted to get over2 more lanes to get off at the next exit apparently.. You do not stop in 60 to 70 mile per hour traffic. In the rain. DH was almost part of the accident. Others weren't so lucky.

We've had another unusually icy winter here and people just don't get the idea. After all they have AWD/4wd so they can go any speed, stop on a dime and keep total control, right? I can't help but take a sinister pleasure in seeing those crossovers, SUVs and the like in the ditches. Just this past Tuesday I was coming home from work and the freeway was spotty and I was pleasantly surprised that most people were driving quite carefully. Then I look to the right and there's a Jeep on the cloverleaf exit, 90ÃÂ° to the road sitting on top of the snowbank, rear wheels 2' off the ground and tires spinning away! She didn't get the idea that she wasn't going anywhere! I couldn't help but wonder if she was on her cell phone, but I still laughed.

Now I didn't laugh when, about a week or two before, heading down nearly the same stretch of road, I'm next to an elderly guy, in a Buick of course, barely able to see over the steering wheel and then I saw it happen. His head turned a few degrees and I could tell he was looking in his mirror. I could see he didn't turn his head enough to see I was right next to him and I just *knew* what was going to happen, so I checked to my left knowing I'd have to make a panic yank on the wheel and sho-nuff he cranks the wheel over. I lay on the horn and he shakes his fist at me! LOL

Complain about the single degree weather, ice and snow all you want, the motorcycles, bicycles and such aren't out at least not in full force. So there is another good thing about winter.

One of my pet peeves is people with burned out lights. I try to tell them whenever I can but some go running like I was the Grim Reaper chasing them! Some are nice about it of course, but really, how hard is it to pay attention to whether your lights work? And shouldn't you be able to *tell* when your headlights are not working? Taillights, brakelights, OK, not always easy, but I guess it's not just an insult that people are driving "in the dark"!

To this day I remember the advice a friend's dad gave him. "Drive like the other guy is crazy." Prophetic, huh?

They are pretty sore. DSIL says DB got his bell rung and his neck hurts some, and her knees got banged up, but they both got checked out and are ok. I'm glad my nephew wasn't with them. This is the SIL who had the stroke in 2006 or 2007. Every time she has a TIA or seizure, he gets so upset. I'm sure he isn't going to want to go to school today. DB put pics on facebook last night. It could have been much much worse. Other driver was sited, so hopefully they won't be out a vehicle for tooo long. They have a pick up, but the jeep was cheeper to run and much better in the snow. Thing was, it wasn't even weather related. Roads were clear and dry. There are a couple of places in about a 5 mile stretch there that merge onto the highway they were on that people do that all the time. Just makes me mad that people don't care what the rules of the road are, they don't figure they apply to them, just everyone else. I haven't talked to them, but dad said they are ok. I'll help if really needed, but with the flu that has been here, they don't need that too. Thanks for caring.

So many think "they have brakes", I am glad that they were not hurt any more than they were, Tami. It makes me fume, I had a guy pull out in front of me a couple of weeks ago, I managed to stop but everything ended up on the floor. And he saw me coming! Stupid a-hole.
