Oil/Gas conversion... to go high tech or not?

We're finally giving in and switching to gas. With a 29 year old hot water baseboard system and fuel at $3.09 gallon it's time. But we're in a bind deciding to go with an advanced system or a basic system.

1800's two family house in Boston, we use about 500 gallons of oil annually on our side and am not sure whether that volume of consumption justifies the upfront higher cost and ongoing additional maintenance and possibly the cost of replacing technological parts over the years. The house is well insulated and as tight as we're going to make it. For now, the system runs only mornings and evenings, it's set back 7 afternoons a week when it's an empty house but that can change at anytime. A basic, simple system seems adequate; but the yearn for a high tech system and saving fuel over the years is ever present.

Which road should we follow with such moderate fuel use, the high tech or basic? The tax credit absorbs a lot of the additional cost for the high tech system, but I'm just not sure it's the right road to follow over the long term.

And on side venting, we want (need) something that will be quiet. One proposal uses stainless, the other PCV. Is one preferable or is it all the same in use?
