oil gray and milky on briggs... gas in oil?

The engine I just put in my JD works pretty good just a little hesitation and black smoke on startup. I planned on rebuilding the carb but I can't get a kit for it with gaskets because I have no idea what model it is. SO I was just going to adjust and clean with carb cleaner and fuel additive.

The more I thought about this, the more it made sense to me. The engine is running too rich, the black smoke on startup and the color of the oil might indicate too much gas??? infact so much that it's going into the oil???

The carb basically has two adjustments, one on top for the throttle and govenor and one at the bottom of the bowl. Which one adjusts the mixture? I assume the obvious that it is the bottom of the bowl but am I missing something? Is there another one?

If it is the bowl bottom, how many turns out is proper? Also can I remove this to clean it and spray carb cleaner right in?

Can I remove the whole carb and put it back together without gaskets?

Yes... i'm still a newb with 1000 questions.
