briggs on swisher smokes oil and gas come out exhaust

I have a swisher pull behind mower with a briggs engine from 2003. I started it for the new season. It took about six starts across 20 minutes to get it to run. First 4 attempts barely turned over the engine. I let it rest about 3-5 min between attempts. 5th attempt sounded like it would start but then stopped turning over. 6th start was like an old smoking car engine. Once it did run, it chugged and smoked. Oil and gasoline shot out the exhaust. I turned off the mower to clean out the exhaust mixture of gas and oil. Smoke formed in and around the exhaust tip while it ran for about a minute. I used new gasoline, changed the spark plug in late 08, have a clean air filter, and clean fuel lines. I used a battery from my craftsman tractor that started the craftsman right up without difficulty. Any suggestions?
