Lunchmeat

Those simple slices for a quick sandwich. I'm not fussy, pre-packaged or deli. The deli smiles when I buy 1/4 lb. Whatever is on sale. How about you?

Fried spam with mayo on rye, please!

Once in a great while, good ol' Oscar Meyer beef bologna on soft white bread with mayo.

Underwood chicken spread on sourdough wheat bread with mayo.

I get sliced beef, ham, turkey and cheeses at the deli for hoagies. Hmmm ... haven't done that for a while. Maybe for Super Bowl.

Corned beef or pastrami on rye with Dijon mustard. Haven't done that for years, either.

Dang, now I want a sandwich!

Hope I can get some! There are quite a few I buy on there. Usually we get the Smart Source or P&G.

    Freezing lunchmeat worked well

I also buy lunchmeat in the bulk pack at Sam's. I keep one pack in the fridge and everything else goes in the freezer. SLICED cheese (processed, not block) freezes well, too. Again, I buy the large pack at Sam's. I break it down into packs about the size of a regular pack of cheese and freeze the rest.

    What's for Dinner ... Friday?

This evening the hunt club had an end-of-the-season potluck, where anyone who had fallen off their horse during one of the hunts this season had to bring a bottle of wine to share. So given that as a theme I made a giant crockpot of Coq Au Vin, using 5 lbs of chicken thighs, carrots celery, onions, mushrooms, and an entire bottle of malbec. I partially followed a recipe a friend gave me, and partially followed a recipe from food.com and I threw in some steps from a gumbo I made a few weeks back. It was delicious! Someone else had brought some french bread and they went together really well. I also had caesar salad, chicken satay, peanut noodles, vegetarian lasagna, and something called duck poppers (a piece of duck meat, and a slice of jalapeno, wrapped with a piece of bacon.) There was waaay too much food there, I don't think I tried even one third of the dishes, and only one of the desserts.

Glenda: How nice of you to treat your friend. Not only meatballs, spaghetti, but also a great dessert. Jasdip: Isn't it wonderful to pull your main dish from the freezer? Corn on the cob is a good side to a lot of foods. Haven't had any this year. Ravencajun: I like your type of a reward. Burgers, plus....... Georgysmom: Happy Birthday, DH. I'm glad you got to go where you wanted. And take-homes for tomorrow doubles your birthday pleasures. Kittiemom: Hamburgers just hit the spot once in a while. I really like steamed broccoli. Sometimes I put grated parmesan on it. Rhizo: Homemade pizza sounds great. (But I'd still want steak, lol). Jim: Did you honestly believe the forecasters? ; * ) I have my plate for you to fill with everything but the fried onions. Old Fixer: I'd love a lobster, but PBJ has its place in life too. Enjoy your ice cream. Shirley

Of course bologna! I go in spells where I have to have a bologna fix, particulary at Mama Goldberg's. THey know exactly what I want when I walk in the door.

Bologna on rye, with lettuce, mayo and pepper jack cheese.

OF, I am picky about lunch meat..I buy Dietz and Watson or Hormel Natural. I avoid Nitrates as much as possible..so I too buy 1/4 lbs a lot, just enough for a sandwich or two.

I prefer a good london broil beef or roasted chicken or turkey. With cheddar or havarti.

My boys like cheap Foster Farms Turkey Bologna..(blech)... Lol

We quit buying lunch meat when we read the ingredients!

We buy a turkey or a ham and roast it ourselves, then slice. Yummy!!!

When I need a fix, I got to Arbys to get a big sliced roast beef sandwich.

We don't seem to do luncheon meats in our home. Maybe tuna or my DH likes corned beef but that's it.

If I feel like a deli sandwich I will go to Tim Horton's for their ham and swiss cheese on a whole wheat bun and, of course, their coffee.

Only deli sliced meats for me. No pre-packaged stuff. And I'll eat almost anything, except head cheese. EWW!!!!!!!

"We quit buying lunch meat when we read the ingredients!

We buy a turkey or a ham and roast it ourselves, then slice. Yummy!!!"

Ditto, ditto, and ditto. Those who aren't attentive to ingredients lists on foods, especially too much of the processed garbage that litters grocery store shelves, do so at their own peril.

My dad owned the local grocery market, and taught me to read food labels.

Vienna sausage, bologna ( which I still love), etc.

Fully aware of ingredients, but when I have a want to indulge in my favorite bologna or spam I enjoy..

Of course my favorite lately is Diplomat's cup of chili and grilled cheddar on rye.

I choose my life style and enjoy! But do try to do it moderately! My right! It's down right rude to knock a person for their likes or dislikes.

I have a right to choose my lifestyle food, good for me or NOT. I'm 74 and enjoying life.
I'm finishing up a bowl of oatmeal before I head to bed.

    I'm happy!!!!!

Well, Glenda, thanks for the smackdown! Much appreciated!

Didn't mean a smackdown! Hope it wasn't taken wrong.

I'm a "foodie" person! You all know that.

I cannot tolerate most processed lunch meats or breakfast meats with nitrates. At least, I THINK that's what bothers me. I actually get a little sick. I can take one bite of my husband's sandwhich, but not two. It might be an allergic reaction.

I do visit the deli counter but only for turkey, roast beef, ham. My husband loves packaged lunchmeat, any kind. He's brought home some vile stuff, lol.

I used to have ham sliced at the deli. My husband loves Kahn's deluxe bologna. We don't get it here in Georgia but when we go home he will buy it either at the deli or in the packages. He was a butcher in his youth and loves to have his meat cut at the deli. We also like roast beef sliced thin and turkey breast. Don't buy it very often anymore.

Got a local grocery deli with incredibily cheap sale prices. Picked up some Corn Beef ($1) for a Reuben. Sliced Roast Beef gets soaked in home-made concoction for Italian Beef. They also have the best Ham Salad in town at less than 1/2 the price of others.

I used to be happy with quick slices like Oldfixer but my tastes have changed.
I love cheese sandwiches now, or tomato and mayo, or blt sandwiches with Hellman's Real mayo. I like Underwood chicken spread.
I like Arbee's roast beef sandwiches, doesn't seem the same when I fix a roast beef sandwich myself.
And I do love sliced beef or chopped beef bbq sandwiches with fresh sliced raw onion, bbq sauce, maybe a few shreds of sliced jalapeño.

I don't buy lunchmeat anymore. I started a healthy eating/weight loss program at the gym. When I cheat, I go for other foods. But when I did buy lunchmeat, I prefered some type of deli lunch meat like ham or turkey. I was at a birthday party yesterday and they had lunchmeat and various salads. I had about 4 pieces of turkey ham but not the bun. It was very good.

Glenda - I agree with you.

I try to stay away from any processed meat, like bologna or hot dogs, because of the salt, since I have high blood pressure. My doc says stick with roast beef, ham or turkey. My favorite snack is peanut butter on crackers, yeah it's got salt.

I don't eat many sandwiches but when I do I want a bologna, mayo and potato chip sandwich on white bread. Maybe twice a year I get the urge. I would hate to give up something I liked because "it isn't good for you" and then get hit by a freight train!! Do I really want to live to be 100? That's a heck of a long time in a nursing home. Ick!

I think if a capable adult makes an informed dietary choice, the choice should be mostly left up to whoever is eating. (The 'mostly' qualifier is because to this day, I do not understand the appeal of dishes such as fugu sushi).

As far as how long one wants to live, it depends on so many factors. A loving family and a sharp mind can make a real difference. As we get older it is true our physical strength and sometimes health declines, but for many of us our wisdom and enjoyment of life can increase.

In my sandwiches, I eat only deli thin sliced baked white turkey, freshly sliced off the roast as I watch.

I usually get well done roast beef and ham at a meat market. They have very good ham salad too and I get that once in awhile.

When I first started going to this meat market, I told the butcher that I wanted some ham, but that it sure didn't taste like ham did when I was a kid. He suggested boiled ham and I like it a lot. In my opinion, so much of the good taste of food has been bred out of it.

We mostly go with Boars Head and top choices are corned beef, pastrami, cajun roast beef, Lebanon bologna which is actually like a summer sausage nothing like bologna. At times some type of turkey breast or chicken. I have my deli meat wrapped in a lettuce leaf, red leaf or butter lettuce and a piece of cheese. Love the smoked cheeses.
But if I get a craving for a piece of bologna or spam or something else I certainly might indulge.
I agree that it is absolutely no one's business and I am very capable of making the decisions.
Now that we are going low carb we have chosen to steer clear of most breads.

Raven, have you tried low carb tortillas? They make a nice bread alternative....we use them quite often for anything from green salads, chopped meat salads, pulled pork sandwhiches, etc.

One of the best sandwiches I ever had, was when we used to smoke a whole turkey for the holidays.

Sliced that wonderfully flavored turkey on bread with just mayo and lettuce. Nothing else.

    So good!

I like the Boar's Head Ovengold turkey breast. Some of the other deli turkey makes my chest kind of constrict when I eat it. Weird, I know. Lately I've been buying some D&W Virginia Ham and Jarlsburg swiss. Every so often I swear off deli meat and just bale some boneless chicken breasts for sandwiches, which taste much better. However, I fall off that wagon because of the convenience of deli meat.

Rhizo I have some of the artizan tortillas and I found some pita that is very low carb and makes a great sandwich.

Raven, to save even more carbs, wrap the meat and whatever condiments you like in a lettuce wrap. I used head lettuce for making them because you get a bigger piece than if you use Romaine. I really like that. Or spread mayo mixed with horseradish on a slice of deli ham and wrap around an asparagus spear. Yum!

I only buy Boar's Head brand, and only Honey Maple Turkey or Onveroast chicken. Very good.

I don't care for lunch meats. I prefer some kind of salad, like tuna or chicken. Or sliced ham or roast beef or turkey.

Recently had lunch at Panera Bread and had a smoked turkey sandwich. It was delicious, and so big I took half of it home.

But, OF, what I would really like to know is the brand name of a good, cheap, frozen pizza that is better than Dominos. Hint, Hint.

Processed lunch meat scares me. I won't say I never eat it but I may buy it once every few months. Same for bacon which I love. I roast my own meat for sandwiches or fry a pork chop and slice that up. or have tuna or salmon.

With all the breast and pancreatic cancer in my family I am trying to be more aware of what I eat. I won't judge anyone else for what they eat though. I love candy, and I am sure the sugar is just as toxic to me.

I did make a corned beef brisket a few weeks ago and it was really good in a boiled dinner. I didn't dare read the ingredients on the package but the meat was very red. It will be another few years before I might cook something like that again.

Sue, We liked the Digeorno or however you spell it frozen pizza. There's one that has a garlic bread crust that's pretty good we used to get the Supreme.

Thats exactly how I eat it Patti, love the lettuce wraps.

My favorite sandwich tastes like ham, but it's a toasted sandwich containing a fried egg, mozz. cheeze and a sprinkle of ham soup base. My brain thinks I'm eating a ham, cheese and egg sandwich, but it's wrong. It's a delicious cheat for a real ham and cheese sandwich.

The Boars Head is a very nice brand. Their Black Forest ham is really nice. I occasionally buy the pre-packaged stuff, but it doesn't taste as good as the meat from the deli. Our Vons sells Primo Taglio, but it isn't as good as the Boars Head.

    Left-over porketta!

RC, thanks. I'll look for that next time I'm at the grocery store. That garlic bread crust sounds mighty good.

I guess OF is just not going to tell us about that pizza he mentioned. Sue

Frozen pizza is good, even the store brands any more. Fully loaded of course. And, multiple choices of crusts. Some of the rising ones rise too much for me, don't care for that much 'bread'. There is a cheese stuffed crust. Digornio is tasty, as is Meijer brand. Think mine was a Freschetta brand (sale $3.99). Red Baron too (made by Schwanns). Tombstone has no appeal. There is vegetarian style. Ham & pineapple (lunchmeat) for Hawaiian style. Taco pizza.

I usually eat leftover dinners for lunch. It's cheaper than lunchmeat. Not that I don't like a good ham and cheese or bologna (with mustard smiley face dotted on), but that's a rare occurence in my house. My son will eat as many hot dogs as you put in front of him, but would never eat a lunchmeat sandwich even if you reason that bologna is a hotdog pounded down into a different shape? Kids!
