@ cass062528, Most okra plants only bare one or maybe two pods per plant, every other day. I agree with LoneJack Zn 6a, KC, you'll need to plant more okra seeds if you can, or else you will be frustrated by the need to save pods over several day's harvest in order to accumulate enough pods to be useful. when I market garden, I plant my okra 9 inches apart, in a double row, staggering the the seeds, so they do not line up. It looks kind of like a saw tooth, or zig-zag pattern. That planting method yields about 1.8 pounds of okra per linear foot of row space over the course of the season. A 150' foot row bearing about 280 pounds of okra per season. My rows are spaced at least three feet apart, so I can squeeze down the middles to pick okra. In my market garden, I plant my rows five feet apart, so I can get a wheel barrow down the middles. This photo shows me standing between two rows that are five feet apart. This photo was taken early in the season, so the plants haven't filled in yet. By August, the leaves reach out and shake hands across the walkway. At that time, I bring out the corn knife to trim them back away from the walk way.

Dee: I leave them out all winter. Granted, we don't usually get large amounts of snow here - just lots of ice since we hover around the rain/snow line. These rubber treads are not at all slick. The pattern is like a web with holes in it for the ice to settle in. I'll occasionally lift them to shake off the ice, although sometimes the ice is too thick to to move them. I tend not to use those granite steps when it's too icy anyway; I have an alternate route down the bluestone paver path (which has different problems). I have to shovel these anyway to feed the birds so I don't always bother to shovel the path away from the granite steps. The rubber treads are best on my wooden porch steps which are partly sheltered and essential for my getting out and in. Claire

No bunnies here even though we have clover. Years ago our cat used to catch the babies and leave them at the back door .... that was sad. Also no coyotes in the last few years. There are woodchucks and mice/rats along the river but probably better hunting elsewhere. I do see the Sweat green bees like the one you photographed, Jane, among all the others in the gardens. And sadly, we also have the dreaded Greenhead flies. Those monsters are making it difficult to work in the garden, especially in the afternoon, without long pants and sleeves. Many mornings a Black-crowned Night-Heron comes to fish for breakfast along the river. The one from yesterday looked particularly "blue". He'll stand a long time at the edge of the dock waiting for the glimmer of fish. He fishes from the edge of the river. I love to watch him "creep" along the bank towards the best spot. The white plume coming off the top of his head.... Finally... a dove nestled into the top of the garden shed roof .... between the Black Mulberry tree behind him and the feeders below.

I was living in town when Mr. Walski was giving talks about the wild turkey project. Although the article describes the CT River valley, I think there were other release sites that weren't mentioned. I thought our town was one of them because of the corn, apples and water. We don't have apple orchards any more but although we are down to one dairy farm, a neighbor has quite a few beef cows (and lots of manure). We used to enjoy seeing the turkeys roost in pines along a corn field. As day was ending, they would gather and one by one fly up into the trees. The cattle farmer made improvements to the field since years of not keeping up with things let trees encroach on the field. About 100 feet of pines were cut back. There are plenty more pines but too much heavy equipment activity. The heavy equipment is now parked a distance away and finally we saw three male turkeys in our yard and then exploring the corn field. Last winter we counted as many as 60 coming down from the pines to see what they could get in our yard before making the tour to other places. I don't recalled seeing blue birds in winter before but this year we probably have 8. I counted 4 females and one male picking up suet scraps and thistle seed. We do not have nesting boxes up so I have no idea where they nest but it is probably somewhere behind our house. Thanks for posting the wonderful pictures. A friend has been getting some good shots at the Nashua airport and posting them on facebook.

We are watching it. Miss Oklahoma and Miss Louisiana are my favorites. Lots of dancing tonight.

Miss Wisconsin won it. Miss Oklahoma runner up.

I haven't watched this in several years. I was disappointed in the quality of the show. The emcee wasn't the best choice. IMO, he was sort of negative. I didn't like the talent portion where all of the other contestents were stretching/stressing/drinking water in the background. It was distracting and took away some of the magic.

Oh my wish you wouldn't have spoiled it for those of us on the west coast. No fun watching when you know who won.

I didn't know it was delayed on the west coast. It has always been a live show everywhere I've lived.

Not been broadcast live on the west coast for a number of years. Not many shows are except for award shows. If I know I won't be able to stay awake, I sneak online to see who won :)

This show is such a non event anymore. In the old days., it was such a big deal when Bert Parks was MC. Much of the magic is gone. I didn't actually see it though so I could be wrong. I came home as the winner was crowned. I wasn't impressed.

I don't watch the pageants but I saw her on the news, she is a very pretty girl. I suppose the show will fall by the wayside, it really isn't politically correct any longer is it?

I watched when it first came on to see Ms Delaware...She and my grand daughters got to be good friends when they all took Irish dance lessons....Sadly, she didn't make the top 15, so I quit watching.....I did hear comments of the near nudity with the bathing suits.....Not like years ago, when they all had to have the 1 piece and were all pretty much the same, only different color......
I guess I'm just getting old, lol......

If you watched Miss Congeniality instead, you definitely spent your time in a more rewarding manner! I used to like Miss America when I was a kid. As a father, I'm glad none of my daughters found this spectacle to hold any interest for them.

I was amused to see it was on last night. Women posing for beauty pageants? Come on. I thought we'd evolved more than that. Maybe I was wrong....

When I was in high school I was nominated by my teachers to be a contestant for the local chapter that feeds into Miss America. I went to the meeting. When they said we'd likely have to postpone college for a year if we won, in order to attend events etc, I tuned out. When they mentioned swimsuit competition, I walked out. I'm pretty sure I would have won too.... I wasn't too hard to look at back then, I was straight as an arrow, had good grades and played the violin really well. I'm just glad I had the forsight to get to college. I'm grateful every day for my masters degree that affords me an excellent career.

Beauty pageants...no thank you.

I hadn't watched in years. so was really surprised to see them walking so "sluttily" (Is that a word? It is now!) I just thought I don't want to watch this, so turned it off.

The competition is dated. Miss America isn't representative of the typical female of that age group and not considered an achievement by most. The pagent isn't a status symbol like it used to be. I thought a couple of the ladies did walk slutty during the swimsuit competition.

We watched because we knew a couple of people in the audience. Dd thought the ladies were beautiful in their evening gowns. The talent portion was interesting to watch. The show itself needs to be revamped. It was horribly done.
