Lodge or Tramontina: best warranty?

I read somewhere that Lodge paid for return shipping when using warranty, and that Tramontina didnt. But then this evening I read a post somewhere that the lady had to pay return shipping on Lodge. Does anyone have any experience with the warranties? i am getting ready to order but wasnt sure between the two. I am wanting the enameled cast iron 6 qt dutch oven.

Tramonta is a Walmart brand.....what more can I say?....Not the best for quality, but they take returns, no questions asked.
But I can't think why you might need to worry about a warranty.....that stuff is pretty rock solid.

From what I have read tramontina has received very high reviews. I was just planning for the "just in case" thing. If one had problems with the enamel, I didnt want to have to pay return shipping to get replaced, if the other one would have provided free shipping label. But I do understand all too well what you mean about walmart brands.

I have the larger set, purchased about a year and a half ago. It has the mirror finish. I liked all of the pieces except for the 12 inch skillet. It's a nice size, but it was TERRIBLE with regard to hot spots. I could actually see a line down the middle of the pan, one side brown and the other side not cooked at all. So I sent it back a few weeks ago, because it has a lifetime warranty and they said that it wasn't right that the difference in temperatures should be so acute. Sadly, the replacement pan they sent me is lighter weight than the old one and MUCH smaller. The base on the old one was 12 inches, where the base on this one is only 9, with the total size of the pan measured across the top being 12 inches on the dot. It's also more shallow. It has a brushed finish. So...if you are considering this set, get the mirror finish, it's heavier and a much better size. You will have to take your chances on the skillet, though. My 9 inch skillet is fine, no complaints, so I do think I got a lemon the first time. UPDATE: The pan they sent to replace the Tramontina TriPly Clad that I'd purchased from Walmart was from the Tramontina Gourmet line. Aside from the differences in heft (the new one is lighter) and shape, this pan is NOT induction capable, as the original one was. It will be heading back to Tramontina this week, but if anyone is shopping, pans from the Tramontina Gourmet line are NOT the same as the Triply Clad line that you can buy at Walmart. In my opinion, the Walmart pans are much nicer--heavier, the and the shape of the 12 inch fry pan is much more useful. Cj This post was edited by cj47 on Sun, Jan 20, 13 at 23:27

I've been hinting to my husband that I really needed the 7 1/4 french oven from Williams Sonoma, finally he got sick of hearing about it and told me to go get it already but when I did, they were not having any sale, I had no coupons and just could not do it. (I'm sure he was aware this would happen!) Thanks to this thread I searched for an outlet store and discovered a store not twenty minutes from me. I called and asked if they were having any kind of sale and they are having a 'scratch off' sale until March, my card was good for 30% off. I easily justified this purchase, lol, and got a beautiful red one for $160. The saleslady tried to sell me a bottle of special cleaner for $12. I have never heard anyone mention a special cleaner, should I go back and get it? My pot is so pretty, I've made chili, chicken soup, beef stew and next up is a Throwdown recipe for Arroz Con Pollo, which is sofrito, chicken and rice.

You can use almost any cookware. ( manufacturers suggest not using cast iron but I do at times). I use mostly Calphalon stainless pots and pans. Although I do also have some vintage Revere Ware copper bottoms that I pull out for some dishes. Our white glass top is over 10 years old and still looks new. I keep a razor blade handy and use Cerama Brite to polish the top when necessary.

The most eco-conscience option for wood is solid. The adhesives in an engineered hardwood = the unhealthy part. The more layers (which means better stability) = more glue. If ecological and economical is the goal then work with solid. I know. Solid hardwood in Coastal areas can be tricky. So long as you work with a narrow plank (2.25" - 3" width) in a rift and quarter sawn product = best of everything. The humidity control is going to be your SINGLE BIGGEST requirement you need to keep 'wood' happy. It doesn't matter if you have solid wood or engineered wood, you MUST HAVE humidity control. Before you make a choice, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you have the builder's HVAC set up looked at. Ask the big questions. Does the product INCLUDE whole-home dehumidifier (or humidifier...depending on your climate)? Does the unit have the POWER to deal with the size of your home (yah...that one SOUNDS silly but it is SUPER important)? Make sure you have an independent assessment of your HVAC from a professional NOT associated with your builder. If you can maintain PROPER humidity control (not just A/C) you can have solid hardwood. The narrow plank hardwoods are relatively low cost and are more 'eco' than anything else on the market. 'Cause all it contains is 'wood'.

Costco carries Tramontina. I don't think WalMart makes things for Costco.

Tramonta is not Tramontina, I think. Are we talking about different things?

There is no Tramonta cookware that I could find. I think that was just a typo.

No, Tramontina is NOt a Walmart brand, not at all. Walmart happens to sell a lot of Tramontina, but Tramontina is not a Walmart brand. Mainstays is a walmart brand, tramontina is also sold at Costco and zillions of other retailers.

If you have a choice of Tramontina or Lodge for cast iron, be advised that each is a product of independent manufacturers. Judge them on their merits, as in the qualities each possess.

I have read a lot of high marks for both products. The only thing I have heard was different was the raw edges on the Tramontina. Thats why I was wondering about warranty. Lodge is a different time zone for me. They dont open this morn till 7:30 CT, and I am Eastern, so I need to wait another hour before I can contact them about it.

Ok, finally got my answers from the companies involved. Tramontina stated if something occured within a few months of purchase they would pay return shipping, but later on the customer pays. Lodge just told me if there was a problem and the item needed to be returned, they pay for return shipping. Since I have read both are comparable brands other than the raw edges on Tramontina, then my deciding factor came down to best warranty.With shipping possibly being around $20, Lodge seems the best way to go.

But.....Walmart has the Tramontina (scuse the previous typo!) on special just now.....and WalMart is so very good about returns.
However I think that Lodge is a higher quality product.
My Le Cruset Dutch ovens have raw un glazed edges.....provides a tighter steam proof seal. I have never had a problem.....and 2 of the ovens are more than 25 years old......and one is used very often!!

Yes walmart is good about returns, but what about 2 yrs from now? I was worried if I had to return a product under warranty for some kind of developing defect. Tramontina is on special at Walmart, and their online. Online so is their Lodge. I got the 6 qt Lodge online for $49.99 before tax, and free shipping. It was only about $10 higher than the other one. Thats why the warranty was my deciding point. I understand both Tramontina and Lodge have great warranties and great customer service, and ratings. But with tramontina if something doesnt show up right away, then you pay to return.

I think you're over-thinking this. Instead, ask how many people have ever had to return a similar piece, and ask what was wrong with it. Chances are, you're beating yourself up over a very unlikely occurrence.

Sorta like the ads that are now running for a car company. The competitor's car has an extra long warranty, but the car advertised doesn't even need it. (And from my personal experience with several of those cars, that's true.... only normal wear-and-tear.)

I understand what your saying. Like buying an extended warranty on a well made product and never needing it. So i think your saying its unlikely that one would ever have to return either brand to worry about the warranty? I have been reading reviews on both products for a few days now. There are good and bad, but a very high percentage are very good. There is always a chance tho of getting a lemon, that wont show its face quickly. Not that either brand doesnt have excellent quality, but things can happen.
