Dried vs Fresh Names?
Comments (12)in the judo world, people complained about lack of consistency when naming techniques, and competition rules from region to region. so some people got "in charge" and standardized things. and now all we talk about is how much we hate the things the people in charge have done. sometimes a little bit of chaos is better than the alternative. but nobody realizes that until they experience the alternative....See MoreLiehberr BioFresh vs Miele MasterCool
Comments (16)Liebherr knows how to create features that make people want to buy them. I happen to know a bit about linguistics. When you invent new terms instead of using terms that everyone else uses, you keep some mystery and you have the advantage of being able to define your term as you wish over time. Instead of calling it "passive cooling" it's a double-syllable term that somehow does something sorta undefined. German society puts up with this and even encourages it, because the thinking is that if anyone is fool enough then fine let them part with their money. The German language allows it to happen, and German speakers know this and don't fall for it, but they are happy to let others fall for it. Note that in other languages, you don't see new terms being invented all the time by private entities. It's a German cultural thing. We fall for it. They make export sales. Passive cooling is good at keeping organic stuff fresh, for longer than otherwise. I mean the kind of organic stuff that is not hermetically sealed. Of course, you should eat fresh foods while they are still young anyway. Of course, all fresh foods will rot one day. Nothing new in these statements. If you want passive cooling in the fridge, instead of air circulating in the fridge portion, you can find it in several makes: Blomberg is another German-Turkish fridge with passive cooling. The Summit CP-171 is this AND it has dual compressors in a 24" size (and tell me if Liebherr ever discusses this in their literature, about this 24" size) An air circulating fridge that is good at regulating temperature swings will keep fresh food fresh a long time. A passive cooling fridge keeps fresh food fresh a long time. If it's good at regulating temperature swings, it will be great. In my opinion, there are too many good competitors out there now to justify paying a cool thousand for undefined Liebherr or Miele BioFrash or MusterCool terms. Those people who want to buy status symbols are free to do so. It's only a thousand dollars, and that is less than half a peanut compared to the dollars blown for other symbols. It's all good....See MoreBeets: Canned vs Fresh (warning: some gross references inside)
Comments (62)LOL! But FOAS, mousse is this year's discussion! There was a mid-20th C. dish that was (it pains me to say) popular (I only know about it because it was something my father's parents fed to my mother when she first met them, and she still talks about it). It was canned beets prepared with butter. I'm sure there must be some kind of delicious, fresh food, fine dining version of buttered beets, but there's no better way to conserve and highlight the can flavor than heating it in butter! I've had canned julienned beets served to me in salads, and they're fine. I'm not a total can snob, and I use canned tomato products and corn. But there are some vile things that come out of cans too. There's a good reason why a lot of Americans are scared of beets. :)...See MoreFresh herbs vs dried herbs
Comments (11)With not much experience growing herbs i agree it is best to pot the mint. And keep the 'runners' that reach out of your pot from touching the ground...they will grab the soil and put out roots in a mater of days. Just cut or pinch off and use those cuttings. The basil could be potted as well. It needs all day sun or at least the most sunny spot you have. It likes a sandy, well drained soil. Does not like to be too wet or slogged. Potting it will allow you to move it if needed as the sun moves toward winter and makes it easier to bring it indoors...it likes full all day southern exposure and will thrive in a window. Oregano is very tolerant and will grow easily once established. Like sage it will keep contained all on its own and become a small shrub. Mine come up every year without talking to it. (both freeze well) And drying is an option. I use my food saver for most thick-leaf herbs. pureed with olive oil and frozen in cubes for tender-leaf ones. My gardens are not tamed per-say. I like a bit rustic, but i have been organic gardening for many years and know individual needs by experience. I've made plenty of garden 'fouls' but some happy accidents. My mints are running wild but in spots that i don't mind...and when they miss-behave and start to crawl, i mow them back. They have become a companion to my groundcovers in heavy clay soil. The GW herb forum is a fun place to stop by. Especially if you get the gardening 'bug'. : ) -herbs are much different fresh. Use less, experiment. They can overpower and make a sauce taste like a bottle of perfume. Yet so good in summer italian dishes when used sparingly....See Morewizardnm
