Anyone live in Philadelphia PA?

Travel agent sent my flight itinerary, and coming home from Ireland, layover in Philly then arrive home LATE for me.

Was thinking about getting an airport motel, spend the nite, get rested, and fly on in the early afternoon, the next day.

Just checking to see if anyone is in the Philly area?

When - date and time....I'm just 20 minutes from the airport.
There's a nice Marriott right in the terminal complex.

Monica, I'm looking at options.
Per schedule travel agent, arrive in Philly via US Air from Dublin, August 22, flight 723 at 11:20 am.

Emailed her tonite to see if my request is workable, I'm sure it is.

Good to know you are there.
We can work on it more as the time gets closer.

I KNOW I'll want to bathe, sleep, and then up and out in the late afternoon.

gwynne2006 & coolbutterfly, Lep livestock is not hard at all to ship and have them arrive in perfect condition. In my active days long ago I shipped and recieved livestock (ovum, larvae and adults) to/from all around the world with no losses, and some took as long as 2 weeks in transit. In the hotter months when I knew the package would take more than a couple of days (like to a foreign country) I packed the shippping box with freezable cold packs. The shipper also needs to make sure that the receiver will be looking for the package on the day it is suppose to arrive so it doesn't sit out in a hot mail box all day. For larvae easiest it to use a zip lock bag with plenty of extra room, place a sheet or two of folded up paper towel on the bottom, fill it with food plant cuttings that have the stem wrapped with soaked paper towel strips and spray it all to just damp. Put in the larvae and blow the bag up before sealing it (a small tropical fish tank pump works well for this). If you are worried about the "zip" seal, tape it with painters or masking tape. Then put the bag in a cardboard box it fits just snug in (or with packing) and ship it. The larger Flat Rate are fine if the bag fits. The bag will have more than enough oxygen for the larvae to make the trip. FWIW, now days shipping lepidoptera across state lines is illegal without first obtaining an USDA APHIS permit to do so, AND it has to be a species that is allowed shipment to your state by the USDA. Bahia is right. Most of them are going to be terribly difficult on the East Coast. I've tried and the seedlings, at least, tend to die on the first hot and humid day. I think this is what would happen, eventually, with most of the protea plants if one could actually obtain them. (and yes, the conservatory at Longwood Gardens that grows rare subtropical plants from mild climates is air conditioned! A luxury I daresay most of us could not afford. Since he knew the name of the designer, can we assume he was being cheeky by calling it the "big estate garden outside Philadelphia"? Haha...good one. The next time I need to mention Kew I'm going to call it "the big botanical garden in SW London.") An option is to try to find Protea species that SHOULD be more tolerant. Unfortunately, they are quite rare, as they would not grow easily in California, and Florida is just too hot for them. The distribution map of Protea caffra seems to place it in parts of Eastern South Africa and Mozambique, Zimbabwe, etc. that might get somewhat hot and humid. Protea simplex is a dwarf relative of it. The problem with the montane Drakensberg species is, sure, they like summer rain (unlike the proteas grown in California, which are winter growers), but in fact that climate often has cool dry air that is briefly punctuated by storms, rather than our constant steam bath. Another option is to do what he said, just root some of the leftovers from your flower biz., and try them in containers. Because of some random spin of the genetic dice, there's no telling whether CERTAIN Cape species (the kind grown in Cali.) might be able to in fact, tolerate our weather. (of course, talking about summer weather here, they are going to need to be kept in a greenhouse in the winter) Keep in mind this happens all the time, just to less of a degree. The Himalayan Rhododendrons grown, say, on the West Coast of England, aren't really happy with the winters being so wet compared to their homeland, but they can manage it. The plants that absolutely won't take a climate different from their local one are the exception, not the rule. Why don't western Blue Brodiaea bulbs rot in our wet eastern summers? I don't know, but they don't. It's just that you are asking a lot for these proteas to survive quite a different regime from their native environment, and proteas being the strange group that they are, have adaptability issues, period. Like not being able to handle phosphorus fertilizer.

Oh come on, Lynn---I'm coming all the way from the west coast! :-) You're closer than I am! LOL catmom---My whole family is from Scranton, and I'll be spending several days in that area. I also have a sister who lives about half an hour from Shady Maple. Are you from PA? funkyart---Yeah, I'm planning to be rolled out. Last time I was there (two years ago), I ate way too much. I'm going to try to control myself this time. I think I may be going out to dinner the same night! sheesharee---We're meeting at 11:30 and will probably be there a few hours. Do you work nearby? Maybe you could come over on your lunch hour?

I do not live there, but the company (Eaton) I retired from has a product development facility there and I have had occasion to be in town on business on several occasions plus a couple of my associates work and live there. Sometime back in the 60s or 70s, Westinghouse found themselves in a financial bind (one of the market crashes) they sold off their industrial controls business and Eaton bought it. The Pittsburgh unit was mainly industrial electric circuit breakers; That business was combined with Cutler-Hammer controls and a couple of Milwaukee engineers were transfered to Pittsburgh. I have also attended a 2 week trainning seminar at the University of Pittsburgh, a very fine school. The summer climate is similar to that of the upper midwest and they do have a winter with snow. There are many streets with significant grades. (Pitttsburg is hilly.) After crossing the river going south or west, one encounters a steep drive for a couple of miles or more as you climb out of the valley to the top of the bluff. The airport is on the southwest outskirts of town and for those living on the east side of the rivers, it requires air travelers to make the climb previously described. I mention these items because the town's topology should be considered when choosing a location to live. The eastern part of town is riddled with unseen, abandoned coal mine tunnels. These do little harm, but I would not want a house directly over one of these tunnels. If you plan to build, its best to know where these tunnels are located before excavating. All season tire tread is recommended; Also, AWD and 4 wheel drives are a plus, although there are plenty of vehicles in town that are front wheel drive only.

Are you coming in from Dublin or Shanon?
The Marriott has a nice restaurant, we could have a bite and chat...i've stayed there many times when I had an early morning flight.
You can walk from the hotel to the check-in in minutes...all indoors.

I just noticed your post- I'm about 30 minutes from the airport. Keep us posted when the date gets closer and maybe we can have a KT luncheon at the airport.

Have appointment with travel agent, today, to give deposit on flight, and copy of passport.

She's booked a group flight, but think we can work out something for me to have a layover, in Philly. I just hate getting home late late, and would rather pay extra to spend the night in Philly and get an early afternoon flight home, the next day.

I'm about 45 minutes from the airport. Keep us posted and if the date and time works out, I'd love to meet you and everyone else. (For the locals: I'm in Chester County).

Well, lunch in Philly is out!
I got a better deal with AARP, flying in from Dublin to Philly, then to Chicago and on to B'ham. No layover! Wah! Sure would have loved lunch, but I'll be getting in 2 hours ahead of group I'm traveling with and 40 dollars more in my pocket.

When you pass over Pittsburgh, I'll send up a wave... Ireland, God's country.....If you've been there, you know but if this is your 1st trip, you're in for a fantastic adventure....

Didn't know you were going to Ireland! Hope you caught one of the cheap deals to Europe. We got our's dirt cheap to Germany for the summer.

Ahhh , so disappointed you won't be stopping in Philly, but that is great you got a good deal. We went to Ireland 5 years ago, flew out of Philly and into Dublin, we went in August too. It was wonderful. I have relatives in Donegal, we stayed in their B&B for a few nights.
