IRS not ready to issue returns?

WTH? I never heard of this before I took my taxes in to get done today. My tax preparer can't send it un until FEB. 14, and my return won't be direct deposited until the end of Feb.

This is a first, good thing I wasn't counting on the cash right away. Here is what I found on the web:

IRS Not Ready for Tax Returns

This is different: The IRS would like you to hold off on filing taxes this year. Taxpayers claiming certain deductions are being asked to wait until the middle or end of next month to file because the IRS needs time to adjust to new laws approved by Congress. If you are claiming deductions on Schedule A, for higher education up to $4,000, or if youÃ¢ÂÂre a K-12 teacher with out-of-pocket classroom expenses, the IRS would like you to wait until it says it is ready. The change is expected to affect 50 million people. "We will do everything we can to minimize the impact of recent tax law changes on other taxpayers," said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman.

Umm, well, I never expect to receive all of my forms before late Jaanuary/early February.

Financial institutions do have that long to send out the information.

So why is this such a problem? When working for a large corporation I never had my W-2 before February 1st at the very earliest.

The installer only left us an extra cord which he did not use. There were no brackets left behind. He left nothing behind. I went to install the toe kick and realized he didn’t even leave the brackets for those either. They’re four missing parts on that too, he handed me a screw. He said this is not long enough go to your local hardware store and get a longer one. None of them were long enough. to head to the hardware store and buy a bunch of shims and glue them together until it’s fat enough in there for the screw to hit. I paid $250 for this installation and they left an unfinished mess. They left the box in my driveway on a very windy and cold day without telling me and I ended up having to chase down Styrofoam. They possibly could’ve left parts in that but I doubt it because they handed me the extra cord that they didn’t use if you pay that much money for an installation it should be installed. You shouldn’t have to run to the hardware store And I did go through the whole manual looking for solutions. There was nothing left for me to make this work. The dishwasher is to the left of my sink which is set an angle because I have a peninsula with an angle. I am so frustrated I have $1700 into this dishwasher with the installation and the kit that I didn’t even need.

I donÂt want to start a fight but I believe that efiling is "the way to go". IMHO, the fewer people that handle my return, the better. When you mail a return to the IRS, the first thing that happens is the information from your return is input into IRSÂs computers. If someone hacks into IRS computers, your information is there along with everyone elseÂs; plus you have exposed yourself to 2 additional potential problems. First, your return is handled by the Post Office. While I would like to believe that everyone in the Post Office is honest, I suspect that there might be a few dishonest folks who would love to get their hands on your return. Second, when you mail your return in and it is input into IRS computers, there is always a chance that the person inputting your information will make a mistake. They might transpose numbers, enter numbers on the wrong lines or even put information on the wrong Form or Schedule. One of the biggest messes I ever had to deal with in my time as a tax preparer was an instance of someone at the IRS putting information on the wrong form. It took well over a year to convince the IRS that they had made the error when entering the return into their computers. I do suspect that more and more forms are being scanned directly into IRSÂs computers so they are working to eliminate the potential for input errors. I worry about identity theft, but believe that efiling is better than mailing a return to the IRS. Efile your return, have your refund direct deposited in your bank account and you will have your refund in 8 to 15 days. Works for me.

I happened to catch a Kenmore Elite induction range at a Sears Outlet for $800. Couldn't pass that up, lol. I absolutely love it. I never thought much about the time I've wasted waiting for a pot to boil but I'm spoiled now. Nearly instant boil. I love how it doesn't actually heat the range itself and how instantaneously I can adjust the heat. I was going to get a gas range until I happened to google "gas cooking health" and read enough to decide against cooking with gas. At least, indoors. I also really love how easy it is to keep it clean. So much nicer than a glass top electric. I searched "induction" on here and found a lot of people who preferred it to gas. I do too now.

I read somewhere that they were testing the system yesterday. It may be that the money is really in the account or will remain "pending" until the system is fully operational. You might look tonight to see if it has been reversed. Depending on your bank's own processing it may not change out of the "pending" until Tuesday or Wednesday. Do not use it until it leaves the pending status unless you have funds in that account to cover it plus any expenses until the status changes.

I suppose that's not so unusual if Congress did not pass these laws until the very end of the year or even after the first of the year. Government passes laws with no regard for how the workers are gong to enact something. They pass a law and it takes time to impliment.

Maybe that is why some of the people who have already received their refunds that have been automatically deposited to their checking accounts, now have had those refunds taken back out of the accounts per news on the internet. The IRS claims they don't know why.

Ok, I just saw this on the news.
Some Georgia state refunds have been reversed.
The problem is with the state refunds, not the federal returns.

Yeah right.

Color me jaded, but I do not believe this to be the legitimate and honest reason for this significant delay of taxpayer money.

Our government is bankrupt, with $99 trillion in unfunded liabilities and $14 trillion in cold, hard debt.

As goes California, so goes the country.

We're in trouble deep. The tax refunds are the least of it.

My employer has until Jan 31 to issue W-2's. All I am saying was that I was rather surprized that MY money wasn't available to be refunded.
I wasn't really expecting much of a refund, being that I raised my fed. and state exemptions so that less taxes were taken out of my check weekly. I was worried I would have to pay in, so I went ahead and filed to see where I stand. I had all my bank info, property taxes, and W-2's and misc. But I am getting a nice return and now it is held up. Are they going to have the same patience for people that owe in?
Scissors is correct. That's exactly what they told me. They can't submit my forms until Feb 14, and I won't get my refund until Feb 25.

It finally is working on my time frame! Go running to the post office on my anniversary.....April 14! Unless we file for an extension like we did last year! LOL!

Hmmmm, the beloved tax dept needs extra time to start processing returns and issuing refunds? I think, for every day they delay accepting returns, they should give us an extra day to file them. So, for example, if you can't file till Feb 15 (approx 45 days from Jan 1) , then give us to June 1 (an extra 45 days after April 15) to send in our returns. Makes sense to me! By the way, I live in New York, where, just a few years ago, I had to wait till July to get my state refund money!!

If you are late paying your taxes, you have to pay interest. If the government is late paying refunds, it should pay you interest.

And the interest fees paid by the government should be paid by the 536 idiots in D.C. who caused the problem. Maybe if they knew there were consequences for their actions/inactions, they would be more conscientious.

According to my bank, my IRS refund was deposited Jan 25.
It just showed up in my account when I checked online.

Yes, when I went to file my Federal return it said that returns that itemize deductions won't be started until Feb. 14th. Figures, on a year when we're hanging on by the skin of our teeth for our refund. Ah well.

Several years ago a local Christian-based social service agency that helps the needy sent some people to be trained in preparing income tax returns for low income people at no charge, which is common in Canada ...

... and they had NO TAKERS, they reported to me.

When I asked the reason, they said that the low income folks took their returns to H & R Block, to get the instant refunds, as they accepted returns early ... was it beginning in Jan?

But even if they filed electronically with the volunteer-based system, they couldn't do it till about mid-Feb., I think it was, and had to wait a few days, maybe a week, for the refund.

And they needed theirs right away ... so accepted the fee from the commercial preparer.

Dang!
