Apron Sinks/Farmhouse Sinks
Comments (26)I'm not a fan of a sink with an upper over it. I think you need to stand too close to the front of the door, no matter what. But if you are determined to do that, then by all means I would consider using a farm sink and bumping it out. That means setting it proud (forward) of the front of the sink cabinets and the adjacent base cabinets. I have this arrangement (my sink cabinet is bumped out as well) and it makes working at the sink extremely comfortable because I get farther over it. The trick is in the selection of the sink. The classic Rohl fireclays are the same all the way around. The sink on the floor upthread is the same. But some farm sinks have notches on the side to fit against the cabinet fronts. Some have a flange. Before you choose/buy it's important to figure out how you want the sink to look and then choose one that will do what you wish. There are so many choices, even in SS it shouldn't be a problem. One factor is whether you prefer a 0 radius sink (square corners) or a more traditional sink with rounded corners. How far you want the sink to protrude -- mine stick out 2 inches in front of the cabinet. One sink upthread has the curved front and doesn't protrude much. Etc. Lots of photos on the link plus a farm-sink installation tutorial that will explain the general concept. Comments (8)In my business, the cabinet installer sets the farm sink or apron front sink. Then the quartz or granite (or whatever) tops are templated with the sink in place by the countertop fabrication company. Two weeks later, they set the tops....then I send out the plumber for the hookup....See MoreRecommendations for white farmhouse/apron sink
Comments (15)@joseph_corlett I'm curious, what does it take to replace an apron front sink with a different apron front sink? To me it looks like many of these apron fronts even of the same size have different footprints. So it seems to me (and I'm no expert so I'm aware I could be wrong) you are having to deal with at best, cutting the new shape out of the countertop and cabinet or at worse having to replace those two things in whole or in part. While I've no doubt for a pro like you its entirely doable it seems like it would be expensive and definitely not a DIY job. My reasoning, and this is entirely for my situation, has a lot to do lean years and unexpected job losses. I'm in a secure time in my life but I never take that for granted or assume that I'd be able to absorb an expensive sink trade out in the future. I hope I will be able to if it comes to it, but of the two choices I had at the time cast iron seemed safer (as in it may be ugly but at least it doesn't leak) while still giving me the look I wanted. I would have seriously considered that Elkay sink if it had been available though, however I don't think it would have fit, I didn't have room for a 36" cabinet. I remember wishing they'd had those granite sinks in a white apron, but at least at the time that wasn't an option either. OP, there is definitely a mix of what is entirely practical and what you just want (consequences-be-damned) that goes on in re-doing a kitchen that is for sure! Though anytime you can find something tough that matches pretty close to what you want its definitely worth an extra expense, IMO. If not you weigh the risk of something not working out with how bad you really want it and then - decide. You live with every decision you make, but I've found that even the decisions that don't turn out like you wanted still tend to be better than what you get from a kitchen you inherited from a previous owner....See Morekitchen sink - SS drop in, SS apron front, or white farmhouse sink?
Comments (5)Do you have to do a drop in? I would do an undermount, much nicer look. I use Le Creuset and other cast iron all the time, my SS sink came with a grid at the bottom, it's the best!! It really protects the sink from dishes and cookware. I had a farm sink previously and liked that one also, this time I wanted a more contemporary look and opted for a large SS undermount....See Morejtkaybean
